    Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

    As with all things, anything is good as long as it is in moderation. Sadly the games Industry has yet to learn that little gem. I love the fantasy setting, I really do. I sat through all three extended Lord of the Rings movies, enjoyed Eragon and I've read the works of Raymond E. Feist, William King and the team of Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, but I am starting too get a little fed up. Every time I check for RPGs or strategy titles, the vast majority of them have something to do with swords and sorcery. I am getting sick of constantly watching an Elf whacking an Orc over the head with his staff. So, it is with a sigh of relief that I found Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation.

    Riviera: The Promised Land

    I am confused, really, really confused. I've reviewed my fair share of RPGs on this site but I'm starting to lose track of what an RPG actually is these days. I started off playing Final Fantasy VII with its customisable characters, its deepish storyline and turn-based battles that were more thought-based than twitch gaming. Then I worked my way through its sequels and prequels and broadened my view with Crystal Chronicles, Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia and so on. Each game has tried to make itself stand out by breaking with tradition in some form, whether it is applying window-dressing to existing methods like Baten Kaitos' Magnus system or making turn-based gaming more reactionary through real-time battles, á la Tales of Symphonia, but they still rely on too many pre-established ideals from the Square Enix's own Idiots Guide to RPGs. Riviera breaks this mould by, strangely enough, reinforcing it...

    "When The Man with the Yellow Hat travels to Africa in search of a lost artefact, he returns with some unexpected cargo - a curious little monkey named George!" and with that we were sold. Any game that tried to draw you in with that piece of gold on the back of the box deserves our reviewing attention. Far from convinced were we about a game that proclaims "Curiosity is coming home!" and is surely aimed at two year olds; but review it we did...

    Ever since Tetris was launched to the world back in the 1980s, Nintendo has been one of the leading figures in puzzle games for all sectors of the marketplace. Last year saw it team up with Mitchell to bring the cleverly simple, yet frustratingly (and pleasingly) difficult Polarium to the Nintendo DS. Now, though, the same team has considerably expanded the experience, but this time brought it to the humble GBA. Can it live up to its older brother's standards, though?
