Weird stigmas

Now Playing: Tales of The Abyss, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Party 2
Now Listening to: Touhou music it seems
Now Watching: Tsuritama, One Piece, Shirokuma Café

This is more like a random thought/observation but

Every single gaming journalist ever makes smartass comments like "God Sonic's stupid friends who are they!!"

do you think they ever
like
take a look at the cast of Mario Kart Wii
realise that half the characters have practically exactly the same character designs
and there are like 6 baby versions of characters
and think

"hmm where did they come from
why are they even characters they've never even been in mainseries games
maybe Mario's cast isn't as fabulous as pop-culture-reference-#23820 after all"

I'm not saying "waah Mario's cast is awful"
I'm not even saying you're not allowed to make characters for the sake of party games

I'm saying where did this stigma come from
that Sonic Team can pull dumb characters out of their ass and get leapt on by every journalist in the history of the universe (even the journalist version of Socrates) for being so inherently evil for doing such an unheard of thing!!

and never stop to think for one second that Nintendo pull dumb Mario characters out of their ass and get away with it. Especially when the Mario series has a lot more characters in its party games than Sonic does... and some of those are yes kind of unimaginative believe it or not.

At least Sonic characters look different
(for the most part, red/black hedgehog and white marijuana hedgehog outstanding)
But you can give Sonic a couple of Hedgehog counterparts surely if Mario's got

- Luigi
- Wario
- Baby Luigi
- Baby Mario
- Baby Wario
- Waluigi
- Baby Waluigi
- Baby Goku in a plumber outfit

as his counterparts, right???

Especially if it's a party game come on
why do people complain about party games having characters in them.

Gaming journalism baffles me.
Stop complaining about stupid things hOLY SHIT.
(yes I realise the possible hilarious irony in saying that and I maintain it enjoy your laffs while they last.)

- A Novella By Joshua Jeffery (◡‿◡✿)
PS. This article is pretty good
http://kotaku.com/5905159/the-sorry-state-of-mario--sonic-gamings-worst-team+up
Apart from the "who the hell is ___" comments actually. But I almost didn't notice them since they're about as redundant as when articles mention how many ~casual games~ the Wii has as a criticism of the console.
PPS. this isn't really aimed at anyone on the C of 3 just putting that out there.
(but if you have consciously made comments like that then shame on you Smilie)

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this blog was this:

Seriously though I think Mario can get away with it because he's more popular and Sonic has kinda got a bad rep with game journalists due a decline in quality over the years. So journalist like to fling poop at Sonic every chance they get. And also because Mario is better than Sonic... Oh no I didn't! =3

I'm thinking people hate them because they became so prominent in Sonic storylines. The random characters in Mario are primarily only in spin-offs. Main Mario games are pretty much Mario only, whereas main Sonic games have a variety, but haters only wanna play as Sonic, and perhaps Tails and Knuckles.

I personally never minded because the Adventure games were my first Sonics, and I loved the Knuckles and Rouge levels and the stories. Do wish for a new Sonic 3&K, though!

Yeah this probably is why... but it's very hypocritical not to mention kind of
- immature
- pretentious
- redundant
- superficial
- unprofessional of them? Especially if they're writing to Sonic fans, gaming journalists never behave as childishly with most other games.

And also because Mario is better than Sonic... Oh no I didn't! =3

Well in recent years, yes.
But the thing that brought this to my attention was that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a pretty lame party game as far as party games go.

With both character casts being in a game of the same quality.. why is it that the Sonic cast gets insulted when Mario's cast is just as bad? Or good, neither of them have to be bad.

Frowning gives you a headache it's a lot easier to like things than it is to hate them for silly reasons. ;o

@Az:
That's sometimes the case but
more often than not it's people who aren't really into Sonic and revisit it for the first time in a while to see there's more to the cast than just SonicTailsKnuckles.

These characters have popped out of nowhere for them, JUST like the Mario characters.
So why the bias?

I'm like Az, my first Sonic games were Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, so it was never a big deal to me seeing a variety of characters in Sonic games.

I actually like some of those Sonic characters, at least they have more character. Baby Daisy and Baby Peach etc are just there to fill up the roster on Mario Kart and don't have any personality.

Yeah, I dislike all the baby characters they added to the Mario games. I was fine with Baby Mario and Luigi originally, but then Yoshi's Island DS went a bit too far. Baby Daisy came from nowhere, too. I could have shat more original characters.

@SuperLink all big Video Game journalists are unprofessional and they are also sheep. So if someone like IGN insults Sonic, Gamespot will just copy them to make it look like they know what they are talking about because it's what the other big website is talking about. And their stupid single minded readers will believe it because they are unable to form an opinion of their own and also because they smell. :]

@Azuardo Baby Daisy and Peach aren't very creative but at least they are better than Yellow and Blue Toads from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Those 2 have no soul!

ModeratorStaff Member

Oh I was raging over the two Toads. Soon as they showed off the 4 player mode in NSMBWii, I was hoping straight away they'd change it. Put Wario in or something. No one cares about two scruffy little Toads.

Well I too started playing Sonic games on GameCube with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle... And although I didn't mind there being secondary characters... I still didn't like the Tails/Eggman and Knuckles/Rouge as much as those of Sonic/Shadow (I sorta liked the Knuckles levels for their music, mostly, but that's about it). I don't think that makes me a hater for that matter...

I usually didn't care for the other characters because their gameplay feels out of place in a Sonic game to me... I mean the speed of the Sonic character is what makes it relevant and justifies the existence of the series, because that's the special feature that the series has going for it, whereas the gameplay for the other characters didsn't seem to revolutionize anything, to me. If anything, given the recurrent camera problems in 3D Sonics (at least those I played), the other characters feel even weaker because they don't control smoothly enough.

I was talking in terms of gameplay here. My point is that I prefer playing with Sonic in general. But like I said, I don't mind the cast of characters at all. Sonic games, especially in recent years, always had a much bigger emphasis on storytelling than Mario games anyway, so the larger cast of character in the mainseries episodes seems relevant to me.

I think it's mainly because they don't talk.

I'll give you baby "whatevers" they are annoying, as is Waluigi, I view him as equally bad as Shadow The Hedgehog in complete and utter lazyness and pointless character addition.
(well, untill silver came along :/)
But, at least he dosn't talk.

I really really don't care what Sonic or his friends have to say outside of the occasional "COOL!" "YEAH!" thats all i want to hear from them.

Like look at this

it's just bad, flat out bad bad bad. This is why sonic's friends are hated. Two pointless Sonic clones that shoudln't exist in the first place talking shite that I don't want to hear about.

Shadow's more imaginative than Waluigi at least.

But.. I'm not talking about Sonic's mainstream games or how terrible the writing is in one of the worst games ever made, that isn't the point at all. Terrible writing in one terrible game does not make the characters in that game inherently terrible characters. Shadow is not a terrible character, he's become redundant over time but originally.. still Wario isn't even used in mainseries Mario games and people like him, I like him.

My point all along is and always was
in party games you're not hearing them blab their heads off, and yet people who've never really cared for the single player Sonic games and their plots hate on these characters for the sole reason of "who the fuck are they where did they come from these aren't the Sonic characters I recognise."

And they don't complain about that when it comes to Mario.
That's what's hypocritical, because the character casts are inherently just as good or bad as each other, especially when it comes to creativity.

No I don't mind them in party/sports/racing games either.

I don't think most people would either but Sega's insistence in putting them in the main Sonic game series, making them talk a loads of shite and them sometimes they even let you control them when you just want to be playing as sonic.

Waluigi has never had his own game. He is just a roster filler. He stays out of the way.

Wario has a successful and imaginative platforming and mini games series.

The babies, as annoying as they are where used in Yoshies Island, a game loved by many. Though they tend to be relegated to roster filler status now.

Toads are just Mushroom Kingdom NPC's that give out gameplay hints usually.

Generally as rubbish as some of Nintendo's characters can be....they are generally inoffensive, stay out of the way and don't talk.

In comparison to

Shadow has a terrible game spin off.

Silver is a shitty character from one of the worst games ever made.

And SEGA insists on hiring voice actors and paying them to read mind numbing drivel.

It's no wonder people don't like them.

Not all of them are bad I agree, I mean Blaze the Cat was a good addition in sonic Rush, mainly because she just offered a different style of play, when used in that context I am totally fine with new additions.
(also cart limitations ment very little use of voices!)

They havn't been as bad recently with Generations, Colours and even Sonic 4.
They just went through a pretty terrible patch last gen and the start if this gen with the quality of their games and charachters.

ModeratorStaff Member

They did go through a terrible patch, but that's the fault of the directors not the character designers or concept designers. (◡‿◡✿)

I mean I guess the average gamer isn't supposed to know that but.. the average gamer also probably shouldn't judge Sonic characters besides Tails and Knuckles for existing just because game-publication-#3982 called Sonic's friends stupid.

In a party game, no less.

"I don't want to play as any of Sonic's stupid friends!" ~ important journalist
whoa omg what did you expect from a party game then
you gENIUS

It's just omg
it's one of the dumbest recurring complaints ever.

Complaining about the characters won't fix the writing of the past decade
Making new characters to replace the old ones will make even more people complain.

You just can't win with these people.

I can see where your coming from but it's those past games that kind of tarnished Sonic and his buddies image so I can see why people moan about them.
I don't think people are moaning about the design of the charchter, rather they are moaning about what they represent, which generally is "shitty times ahead".

If they keep making good games i'm sure in time people will forget about it but it will probably take a while.

Nintendo do get grief for Navi and Fi(fopr good reason) but then you have people group Midna in with them or that hat from Minish Cap(far as I remember they wern't annoying at all). Just a normal response I suppose when the last time they dealt with a similar character they where an annoying prick!

ModeratorStaff Member

I hope people do forget about it, it's just dumb to complain about it.. especially when you've got a game like All-Stars Racing and every other person is saying things like "idc about these losers!!"

That's like going up to Smash Bros and saying "man I don't want to play as all these dumb characters!!"
(i.e. missing the point completely and being eligible for being fired from video games and the internet for life)

Maybe it's just me but I've always found the continuous fandom jokes about how ~annoying~ Navi/Fi are to be more annoying than the characters themselves.
They're harmless and they don't bug you in a way that isn't easy to ignore for the most part (especially Fi).
I can understand getting annoyed by the incessant pointless dialogue in games like Sonic Heroes but if people honestly genuinely find Navi and/or Fi extremely annoying maybe they just get annoyed too easily.

Humorous results if they ever become parents.

Well the internet in general is full of hyperbole, I mean just look at any game forum and you will have someone spitting the most acidic vitriol scathing reviews about elements in games they don't like, and in reality it's not that terrible, but then they attack you for having lower standards or somthing.

It's all black and white, games are either "Fucking shit" or "BEST GAME EVER, GOTY"

I'm sure I have been guilty of it sometimes. Smilie

If you met these people in real life I would assume they wouldn't behave like this.
Maybe it's just becasue text is so emotionless, it can be hard to read the intent of the writer at times.

Then there are those that just jump on bandwagons or use it for comedic effect.

Yeah that's true I'm also guilty of that (he said innocently as he wrote a blog and thread arguably full of it).
I think journalism itself could be handled better though.. or maybe it's nice for gamers to have something to ridicule in harmony since they can't agree on anything else. Smilie

Corporate selloooouuuts!!!!! etc.

I like to consider writing on the internet to be like a video game, there are certain tactics (like button mashing) you can use to give your writing a vibe or emotion.

As for comedic effect I do like that but only if it's actually funny, and 9/10 times hotshot journalists on big publications overuse old jokes and generally miss the funnybone.

They should make a Sonic game where he gets captured by Eggman/Robotnik and the only way to free Sonic is to bring Eggy all 7 Chaos Emeralds. Queue each of Sonic's pals going on missions to get all 7 emeralds, one per friend - including Jett the Bird!

It will be Sega's best game ever. Seriously! When they arrive in Eggman's lair the Chaos emeralds react, Sonic is free, Eggman gets pissed and final Super-Sonic battle ensues!

I should work fo SEGAR
