New Job!
The last blog I did was me complaining how much I hated my retail job, getting pissed off with the number of bastard customers and general nobheads there are in the world. But I can now reveal I've finally moved on from shitty retail and have bagged myself a good proper career!Starting 3rd of October, I will be a trainee lab technician at Fugro Robertson (formerly Robertson Research). The full details of exactly what I'll be doing aren't 100% clear to me, but I was shown around the place on the day of my proper interview, and have a good idea. They get these small bags of rocks shipped in from all over the world and we have to clean them up and examine petroleum and chemical levels, as well as identify any fossils embedded in them. I think there's a lot more to it than just that, but it's geoscience stuff, and they'll just train me up from scratch. I'll have a much more solid idea after my first few days there. Eventually, they send you overseas to places like the Falklands, Africa, Norway and other countries. I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing, but just gonna take it one step at a time. When you're overseas you get a big bonus each day on top of the salary too, so working overseas is where it's at.
It'll be a proper 9 till 5 job, Monday to Friday. So obviously the plus point is I'll now have all evenings and weekends free. Overseas work is 12 hours a day every day, which sounds bloody mental, but obviously the money bonus is the incentive to do it. Won't be sent abroad yet though. It's a 6 month probation, and if I do well enough they'll keep me on and then I reckon start sending me out of the country.
It's a huge step up from what I was previously doing, but it's a proper career and I badly need it. So I'm gonna try my best to stick with it.
For those curious about how I got this job, it was simply a case of looking on the Direct Gov Job Centre Plus website, and just getting lucky in seeing it. I applied on the off-chance, not really expecting to get anything out of it. But it just goes to show that if you don't try, you'll never know. So anyone else stuck in retail like I was, or just looking for a good job, or job in general, go for whatever takes your fancy. Even if you don't think you've got the grades to match, you can still land it on your personality and interview skills should they ask you in. Just be confident and calm and it can go a long way.
But I felt like sharing this good news with my mates here, and just to prove that good things can come to those who wait. I was in retail a good two years, not going anywhere, then all of a sudden I have this. So take Peppy's advice: never give up, and don't feel down if you're in that situation. It will come eventually.
~~~
I think the full time work will perhaps hinder my gaming progress now though, which I am gutted about lol. I've got well over 50 games to finish and I have only just started in the last month to get through them. Plus I had a week holiday booked for Uncharted 3's arrival... now I don't know if I can take a holiday at the new place so early... Good thing about it is that I will now have every single evening free to play tennis and turn pro (lol).
Well this was a long blog, so definitely gonna be awarding stars to those who reply. And of course, I'm in a celebratory mood anyway. No more shitty customers! Time to crack on with Ninja Gaiden and slash shit up! Dead or Alive fans, did you know Ryu Hayabusa and Ayane are in this game? Ridiculous bouncy boobage in true DOA style are plentiful too.
Thanks for reading guys, and all the best to you.
Hah, damn it. I wanted to ask you if you got a new job when you've said you are going to write a blog about some good news but I didn't.
Congrats anyway man!
Great to hear that you finally got away from that shitty job and those stupid customers!
I certainly didn't expect you to apply for something like this but from what you've told me, almost anything's better than your old job. You've got to let me know how it is and what stuff you're doing there as it sounds pretty interesting.
Jesus, 50 games? That's almost half the amount of games I've played so far in my life!
That's going to take you ages, even without new games coming around. I know it might be considered cheating, but have you ever thought of selling unfinished games you really don't feel like playing (anymore)?
Thank you! I know, it never really crossed my mind before either, but it's like, you kinda don't know all the types of jobs out there until they become available to you. It's only through browsing the job site that you get to find out some more interesting jobs. And yeah, it was a case of simply just thinking "why not?" and just applying for it. I didn't expect to get the job, but the summer work I did in the US I think definitely helped kick it in my favour, seeing as this involves overseas work. But yeah, I will let you know. I still don't even know everything myself! So it's just gonna be completely new to me.
And I know this is a huge thing for me now, and I'm really so thankful I've finally got a proper job... but does it sound bad that I kinda feel gutted that I'm gonna get less game time and things? XD Especially if I get sent overseas. I just kinda wanna be playing games lol. One side of me is saying I need to grow up and focus on this, but the other is so sad that I'm gonna get less time to play games haha.
Nah, I don't think I'll sell anything. I like building up my games just for collection purposes, even if it does mean having so many left unbeaten. I kinda wish I was able to sell a game after I'd beaten it, to reclaim some cash back, but I'm not that type of person, instead not being able to get rid of any game I own, no matter what it is.
I personally like jobs that everyone else dislike, like retail and dealing with people's problems, because that's how I am, always ready to help anyone and being very patient even with the hardest of people to deal with XD (because I feel that I accomplish something that few people can do and feel happy about). But that's just me.
Anyway... did you have any previous experience in geoscience ? Is that probably something that you studied in the past, or not even that (hence your need for training first) ?
Well, with retail, you hate it when bad customers give you a hard time and ruin your day. Generally, and especially where I worked because the town is more of an elderly people's location, most customers are friendly and not a problem. But I think my problem also lied in the workplace itself, the people I worked with and the way we were treated. Just things being consistently unfair and prioritising one person over another with nothing changing. Plus, if you didn't have any plans to move up in the retail business, i.e become a supervisor or manager, then you feel like you're wasting your life in a dead-end job on basic wage. Which is no career for a young lad. Retail is good for improving your communication skills on a one-to-one level, but it's not something you want to get stuck in because you can't really afford to live a life on a crappy retail wage.
No experience in this new job whatsoever. But the job title being advertised was Trainee Lab Technician, so they were purposefully looking for people without any experience. It would have helped, but it wasn't necessary. But now I want to read up as much as possible to understand this job completely and as quickly as I can.
@Azuardo: Haha, I understand that "I just wanna play games!" feeling, only to an extent though since I still find a lot of time to play mine. I get that feeling whenever I'm busy irl but it just can't be helped, so we have to learn and deal with it. I'm not really affected by school just yet but when my final exams come around next year, I might just have to really cut back on gaming for the first time ever.
Ah, I was kinda expecting that answer. I like to have a collection as well but in my eyes, owning a game is only worth it when I actually have the necessary time to play it. Even if I had the money to buy much more games than I actually have time to play, I probably wouldn't do it just because of that principle of mine.
Good to hear man. Your new job sounds great, such a massive upgrade from retail work. The fact that you get to travel to different countries is awesome. Though I don't get why they send you to different countries if the rocks you receive to examine are shipped from around the world or are your objectives different whilst abroad? None the less it sounds much more appealing than retail work, well at least to me it does.
I know the feeling >_<, I'm always saying this to myself when I've got Uni work to do or when I've got a shit ton of exams to revise for. T_T
Also I roughly have the same amount of games to complete as you so yeah you're not alone on that one.
Cheers, L. Yeah, didn't really elaborate on the overseas work, but to be honest, I don't fully know what it entails just yet. I think we actually do something like dig into the earth itself and examine the petroleum levels in those areas. Can't say for sure but I think there's still a lot more to it than what I barely know already.
Wish I had SirLink's philosophy of only buying games if I know I will play them, but I tend to buy them whenever I see a bargain, which happens often.
If that's the case it sounds great. Part of me has always been interested in jobs that require traveling around the world and studying the environment. It just seems so appealing and peaceful.
Me too =P, I recently bought Okamiden with no intention of playing it just because it was cheap.
Maybe you should look into the same type of job? Try looking in the careers section of the Fugro site I linked to, and maybe check it often. Or just send a letter to them anyway with your CV. Well, finish up your uni studies first perhaps, then try it. Certainly no harm in trying anyway.
As enticing as a career in that area sounds I just can't change my career path yet. Right now I'm focused on studying and working in the human health sector but if I do become bored of that line of work then yeah something in a similar field to your job could be an option.
I guess this won't be a good time to tell you that I haven't even played the original Okami yet and I bought it at launch in 2007. XD
Congrats on the new job, man!
It's normal to be a little nervous, but my guess is you will end up enjoying the new work more than you even think. Time management won't be a problem once you get into the groove of the new schedule. And c'mon, the overseas work with the hours and bonus pay will make you stinkin' rich in no time! Then you can retire to a private island (with a tennis court where you will hold annual "King of Tennis" tournaments) and reign as champion overlord of Uncharted 3!
Ok, I lied.
I made the Uncharted 3 champion part up. (That's going to be MY title!
)
But the King of Tennis thing and the private island are definitely gonna happen!
Congratulations Azuardo, I'm happy you've found a new job path in life.
I'm still looking for a job, no one seems to want to take me on. Hopefully the experience I got will help soon though.
Good luck.
Cheers Marz. Hoping it goes well too, and that I can actually stick it out.
Good luck with yours as well. It'll come along. Just takes a while sometimes, as it did for me. Getting any experience you can helps, so it'll just be a matter of time.
