    Swords, swords and...some other stuff!

So I recently decided that I need one or two hobbies aside from videogames, anime, listening to music etc. and I started by buying this...

I've been practising some swordfighting for a while now but I didn't really have a proper practice weapon so far. Just a juggling knife I've had for years that has surprisingly good handling and durability. Smilie

I have a 7yrs old self-made wooden Master Sword replica (though it's not that accurate as I changed it up a bit Smilie) as well but it's too valueable to me to actually train with, though I use it from time to time with a self-made wooden shield (made out of the seat of an old chair lol) just for the fun of it. Smilie

If you're wondering why in the world I painted the shield green..err I don't know anymore either. All I know is that painting the Hylian Shield pattern was way above my skill at the time (and likely still is), so I probably ditched the colour blue along with that.

When you have a good look around Ebay, the prices at which you can get decent sharp weapons on there are just totally insane. Not even €10 for a badass-looking sharp Machete? Daamn. I would have ordered one of those as well but I don't need it...yet. It's actually much more of a challenge to find nice and authentic looking unsharpened practice weapons because they seem to be much less common and a bit more expensive as well.

But yeah, I can't wait till this one arrives. If the product description is to be believed, it should perfectly replicate the feel of a real Katana and be ideal for training. It's going to take a while till it's going to arrive though, as it's shipped from the US. I should get it just before Skyward Sword comes out though, so that's gonna be perfect. Smilie

By now you probably noticed my obsession with swordfighting and can also imagine why I'm so excited about Skyward Sword. Smilie I'll probably perform every sword slash like I mean it and see how I long I can last. At the very least my stamina shouldn't go down as quickly as Link's Smilie...though I won't recover as fast as him once I'm exhausted. xD Is anyone going to do that as well or am I just weird like that? Smilie Anyway, just a bit more than 3 weeks till it's finally out and I still haven't given in and read or watched anything about the game since E3 this year, so I'm set! Smilie

I already have a good idea of what the other hobby is going to be but I'm not going to say what it is just yet. Smilie It too has something to do with a certain franchise I love though, so feel free to take a guess. SmilieSmilieSmilie for the first person (except Azuardo because he would know for sure) who gets it right. Smilie

I've been feeling really nostalgic lately and really want to replay some games I grew up with, like Pokémon Firered or Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. Such a shame that there's barely any time for that with all the new games coming out. I have a ton of games I've yet to play too, so I sadly can't be 'wasting' any time replaying games I know inside out just for nostalgia's sake. I wish I could just stop time for a while and replay all those games I want to experience again. Is anybody else here feeling like that every now and then too?

I recently finished Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and I totally loved it. I really regret that I didn't pick it up any earlier than I did. Just what the hell was wrong with my younger self? Smilie Well anyway, I also wrote a reader review for it, which you can check out here if you feel like it.

Oh yeah, quick shout-out to Azuardo who should be coming back later today. Even though you've only been away for a few days, something's missing on C3 when you're not around. Smilie Hope you had a good time!

PS: I'm kind of getting sick of the feeling when I see new posts and they're all in the Skyward Sword topic...Smilie

Link has made me interested in swordplay. I haven't actually gotten into it as such, but at a young age I always used to love Link (Still do Smilie ). So, if I was to get into waving a sword around in my room like a madman, I would want it to be a replica of the Master Sword (maybe even the Kokiri Sword? Smilie)

Oh, it would definitely have to be a Master Sword replica for me as well but the only sturdy (and affordable) ones I've seen for sale so far are (slightly) sharpened and that's not something I'd want to train with, at least not at my current skill level. Smilie

Simply buying a similar sword to train with seemed too lame for me, so I decided to go for a Japanese Katana instead. I'm a huge fan of Japanese swordplay (called Kenjutsu), which is something that's really not Link's fighting style. Imagine Link wielding one though, how badass would that be? XD

Yeah, me and a slightly sharpened sword isn't really a good idea. xD

The only real sword practice I've done is fencing, which was an enrichment activity at school and everyone had to do it on this one day. I really didn't like it.. it was just stabbing and meh. It was pretty boring if you ask me. Smilie

I'd really love to have a katana or wakizashi though. Both are awesome. :3

Heh, I made sure to go for one that's full tang but thanks for the heads up anyway! Smilie Before I bought that katana I actually didn't know what full tang meant but so many swords from that seller had it in their description, I just had to look it up.

It's also the reason why I don't use my Master Sword replica, as the blade is just glued on the handle. I'm surprised it didn't fly off once by now and right into my TV or laptop. Smilie

Would be interesting to know whether that juggling knife I have is actually full tang because it has endured quite some abuse now and it's still just fine. It doesn't look like it is but regardless of that, for something that's not intended to be used for swordplay, it really is quite durable. Smilie

That sword you've ordered looks really awesome. I'm also surprised you haven't cut yourself from juggling that knife. Smilie
I've had some basic Kendo training but that's pretty much it. As for owning swords I only have replicas of the following blades:

(it's longer than 68 inches and taller than me)

Also I know that nostalgic feeling you're talking about but time is also an issue for me as well. I don't even have time to play new games never mind old games.Smilie

I know what hobby it is! ;]

I don't know too much about swords really but that's a cool one you've got on order there. I've always thought the swords in Majora's Mask were awesome. I loved the Razor Sword a lot, and liked to stick with it sometimes, even though it could eventually break. But the Gilded Sword and Great Fairy Sword are equally awesome. I would love to see real life versions of those.

L, so cool you have a Buster Sword replica. I saw a vid on YouTube a while back of some really buff guy trying to use a heavy Buster Sword and it was impossible for even him. Was entertaining to watch, but not very practical lol. Awesome to own for kicks though.

Thanks for the shout, SirLink! I've had a hectic few days and tired as hell. So glad to be back now. Great to see you playing Oracle of Seasons too. I absolutely love that game.

@L: Tbh, that knife isn't actually sharpened and I never even once thought of actually juggling with it. XD I do have it under perfect control by now though. A direct hit with it would still hurt a lot even if it's unsharpened. Smilie It all comes down to the skill of the wielder. I'd imagine that if you're really skilled, you could easily kick some tough guy's ass with just a Bokken (wooden training sword).

Holy hell, longer than 68 inches? That's really damn long! (That's what she said Smilie). The katana I ordered is 'only' about 40 inches, which should be perfect for me. Nice Buster Sword replica too. What material is the blade made of?

@Azuardo: Ha, funny that you are the only person to mention that so far and you're the one who's excluded from it. Smilie It's really not that hard to guess though but if nobody wants 3 almost free stars by the end of this week, you get them. Smilie

So I take it, you've always used the Razor Sword in Soul Calibur II as well? I think it looks really cool too but it's a shame that it's totally useless in Majora's Mask and not really good in SCII either. Great Fairy Sword kicks fucking ass in that game though. Who doesn't enjoy kiting (to kite = MMORPG term for running away from an enemy and often shooting him from afar while doing that) the opponent with Bow, Bombs and Boomerang while the sword gradually restores your HP and then moving in for the kill? XD The Gilded Sword is one of my favorites as well, I was always looking forward to finally getting it in each Majora's Mask playthrough. Kinda wish they would have taken that into SCII instead of the crappy Armos Sword and Shield.

Heh, well you should know why I'm playing Oracle of Seasons right now. It's a secret to everybody else though. Smilie

I think I did use the Razor Sword a bit in SCII, yeah. I liked the Big Goron Sword's reach, but I think weapon of choice was Great Fairy as well, for the cheap health regen. So with you on wishing they replaced the Armos series with the Gilded Sword too.

Wait, do I know why you're playing OOS again? I can't remember if we mentioned it XD I can maybe take a guess though... and if that's true, that's awesome. Probably my fave 2D Zelda!

Always wanted to get a replica sword to play around with, as long as it was blunt so I couldn't do any damage with it. Smilie

I remember a few years ago I went with my family to a seaside town (can't remember the name), and I practically drooled over this stand of three fake-but-authentic Samurai swords. Bought them, but they didn't last very long. :/

Let us know how that one you've bought holds up Sirlink, I'd be very interested in trying again. Also L, what is that Tensa Zangetsu like to swing, have you tried?

I want to play SC2 now, I only ever had it on Xbox. I played it on GameCube the once, and I've always wanted the GameCube version due to Link being in it.

    I may just have to purchase a used copy online... ;-;

SC2 is definitely the best game in the series as well, I put a lot more hours into it than I have done in IV.

I've seen that video and it's pretty accurate. I can barely lift it with two hands and it's near impossible to swing, it's just way too heavy.

I think it's made from stainless steel but I'm not sure though, bought it years ago.

Well it's quite hard tbh, the sword's weight is unbalanced the blade on it is too heavy so controlling it is quite the challenge. But I've swung it a few times at my door and left some nasty marks. XD

So at last I got my katana, after it stayed somewhere in the US for over a month thanks to USPS screwing up something. If it wouldn't have been for that, I'd have received it in about a week. Thankfully the seller was very co-operative and tried to keep me up to date.

About the katana itself, it's really well crafted especially for the price of €30. I haven't tried it out that much yet but it's not that easy to swing with one hand due to the length. Weight really is no issue, it's light as shit at less than 1kg. XD That's what practice is for though. There are very few rooms in my house that are even big enough to swing it in freely, so I might have to practice in my garden. Too bad it's winter and full of snow. Smilie Maybe I could cut up the snow...
