No Issues for Rare Developing for Nintendo

By Jorge Ba-oh 15.05.2008 8

Rare has dismissed recent claims that there's issues with the Microsoft-owned studio producing titles for Nintendo's DS.

With Rare titles appearing on both the GameBoy Advance and DS, it had appeared fine for both parties to accept development on what's not a rival console. However, recent reports had suggested that there may have still been issues for Viva Pinata being shrunk down for Nintendo's DS.

Viva Pinata originally appeared on Microsoft's Xbox 360, a sequel is currently in the works.

Pocket Paradise producer Paul Machacek stated in a recent interview with IGN that "Due to the game's broad appeal, it makes sense for this game to be on the Nintendo DS. After all, Microsoft is not only focused on selling platforms but also building great IP. We have no conflict in the handheld market and have been quite happy to continue producing games for it."

Rare stated this a while back. They've even developed titles for the GBA during the last generation. Microsoft also stated that their is not a problem on their front since they do not have a portable console and are not competing directly with Nintendo's portable consoles.

Yep - However, there have been recent rumblings that all may not be well - especially given Viva Pinata started off on the 360, where as Banjo, Diddy Kong etc all stemmed from the N64 and earlier.

Being a sole XBox franchise has led people to think that there maybe issues with a once Microsoft-exclusive brand appearing on a console, despite being given the green light to develop it.

Good to see it all cleared up though, and who knows, we may see other MS franchises on the DS in the future.

Has Rare developed anything for the PSP?

If they consider themselves in direct rivalry with Sony (PS3), and consider Nintendo's Wii as serving a separate target market, Rare/MS could be publishing for the DS in an effort to indirectly hurt Sony.

Did that make any sense??? (it's late and I'm tired) Smilie

Well I guess that provides evidence of Microsoft not entering the portable market...

Smilie it will be funny if it do alot better on DS then it ever did on 360

Yeah it could well do.

Will probably sell better than Kameo and PDZ did, probably not Banjo 3 though.

Rare do nothing for Sony at all.

Also, I've seen copies of Zoo Tycoon DS with a Microsoft logo on the back - that was a bit weird.
