Nintendo: Users Happy with Wii Storage

Nintendo recently commented on the Wii's storage solution during the WiiWare promotional event in Germany.

The folks from ONM spoke to the European Nintendo executives on storages issues that have come about since day one.

At the moment, we of course know that some people are strug... well, it's not that they're struggling, it's just that they don't like the system as it's set up at the moment. But at the end of the day, the system is manageable.

I realise that some people would like to store everything in one place, for easy accessibility, which is understandable. For them, it would be more convenient to have more space. But having said that, I don't think that's the general feeling of most of the people.

Most of the people are happy with what they have. Of course, we could increase our technology and add a hard drive, but then what we lose is simplicity and accessibility, which is one of the important things for us. We want our consoles to be easy to access and not cause headaches

Nintendo Europe's senior marketing director Laurent Fischer

It seems that Nintendo are still assuming the Wii's storage solution (512MB on-board and a maximum of 2GB via regular SD cards - SDHC not being compatible), is perfect for users. Whilst at present it does seem appropriate for game saves, a handful of VC games and the odd channel or two, with WiiWare on the way - would a hard-drive really dent the machine's accessibility.

Surely having to delete and re-download content to keep within the system's memory limits is far less accessible then having all content available in a single location?

I personally don't have a problem with the storage anymore, but I can understand how it will affect other people and I believe they should maybe release a hard drive of some kind for the people who download a lot of content.

I don't really download many VC games and I don't plan to ethier. I may buy a few WiiWare games though, but the memory for me is alright for now.

I still think there needs to be a hard-drive and less limits in place. 100 Mii limit? Come on. 30 person limit in Mario Kart? Sigh.

A hard-drive would really make things so much more fun, and far more accessible for Wii owners imo. I really don't know why Nintendo aren't budging.

I have no need for a hard drive (or the SD cards either) but I see no reason one couldn't be provided for those who feel the need to have one and wish to 'lose simplicity'.

Give people what they want, don't tell them what they need (and don't need).
Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not. Fear not.

I feel your pain, but there's one important point to make: realize that NOE/NOA are as in the dark as we are much of the time. NCL doesn't tell them *anything* it doesn't have to, so while he's busy applying the usual PR spin to a lousy situation, the bigwigs in Japan might have a solution in the offing in the very near-future.

I guess what I'm saying is: take anything you hear from NOA/NOE with a few metric tons of salt (or from any other foreign subsidiary of a Japanese corporation).

Well, this comment DOES come from NoE which, no offense, but is the ugly stepchild of Nintendo proper. I guess a storage solution will be announced at E3... probably open up the SD Card so you can play Wiiware games from them and that can make us be ok for at least another year. THEN at E3 2009 they announce and release a Wii Harddrive with 10 GB flash memory for $49.99.

Or maybe, just maybe, the Wii HDD will be available by Holiday 2008.

How hard would it be to make a small hard drive that you just slap on the Wii somewhere? If you don't need a hard drive, or if a hard drive is somehow too complicated for, then you don't have to buy one.

I don't know why they wouldn't release a hard drive or something similar. People buy the hard drives, which means money. With this extra storage, people will be more inclined to buy games. Win-win, surely?

I don't understand how a hard drive would be more complicated than juggling data between your Wii and several SD cards. How irritating..

I don't know a sinlge Wii owner who doesn't think the console's storage limitations are totally lame. The Xbox 1's (!!) storage solution totally eclipses the Wii's. Which is really quite embarrassing lol. Hell, I'm not happy with Wii storage, and I don't even own one!

How is having a hard drive complicated!!! You stick a fucking cable the back JUST LIKE AN IPOD! HOW IS THAT GOING TO CAUSE A HEADACHE! And the people that it's going to confuse probably aren't going to buy one either!! DAMN YOU NINTENDO!

This is one of the few reasons I'm starting to neglect my Wii and playing my PS3 a lot lately. Nintendo's making it so fucking hard for me to like the damn console...To be honest, I'm starting to really hate Nintendo. Their fucking attitude, my god! I don't think I give a shit as much anymore. I'm just tired of it. Their archaic philosophy towards technology is just so irritating.

I honestly don't see why we can't just plug a USB drive into the USB port. I see 2 GB drives selling for $20 and 8 GB drives selling for $50. While not as big as a hard drive, they are easily portable and wouldn't require Nintendo to alter the Wii. I imagine storage on a flash drive would require only a firmware update.

I'm not one of those that has run out of room on the Wii. I have under half my space left though, and I can see the end coming. Yet I've attempted saving files to an SD card. It generally takes a long time. I can imagine the inconvenience of saving files, deleting a channel, and then loading a new one as being horrid.

Nintendo needs to stop ignoring the desire for more storage. If their channels keep up at their current pace, even Wii owners that don't download as much will become low on space.

Lose simplicity and accessibility? If it so hard to comprehend the concept of a hard drive, DON'T FUCKING BUY IT THEN! Oh and downloading then deleting/moving to an sd card when done with and redownloading/moving back to the wii memory when you want access to it again is so much simpler.
