A young girl was shunned as "fat" by Wii Fit despite being active and of a healthy weight and height for her age.
According to The Daily Mail, Obesity experts have eaten Nintendo alive after the Wii Fit software calculated the 10-year old as fat. When starting up the board uses a player's height and weight to calculate their levels of BMI – placing them in categories like "underweight" and "fat".
A father revealed his daughter's embarrassment when she was labelled as fat, in spite of being 4ft 9in tall and weighing 6 stone. "She is solidly built but not fat. She was devastated to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her she isn't.
I know it is just a game but we already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like magazine models and now we have a game that tells them they're fat. This to me is very worrying."
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, has claimed the BMI measurement was completely misleading – "BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used. I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents."
Nintendo have denied a warning for the game, but still apologised to any customers "offended by the in-game terminology" as part of the BMI system. "Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development."
It looks like Nintendo invented the word "fat" it seems...
Do you feel Wii Fit gives an accurate representation of one's health and fitness level, or should it be seen as a bit of fun?

796 58 11.05.2006 STUShe probably is fat, BMI is inacurate for chilren, but it's usually cos it tells them they're too skinny. Either that or she's incredbly muscular for a 10 year old girl.
When i was 10 i was 5ft2 and only weighed 5and 1/2 stone, i'm now 17, 6ft4 and weigh 12 stone dead on, don't gain weight and don't loose weight. i think i'm too skinny for my height but BMI says i'm just about perfect. Wierd how i eat alot of jusnk and am(according to my dad) the laziest person he has ever known.
