Pokémon MMO Pitched by Nnooo
Recent News
Nnooo may have the answer for Pokémon fans looking for more: an MMO being pitched to the folk at Nintendo.
The developers of WiiWare game Pop are keen on producing a massively multiplayer online game for the Pokémon series, and according to their licences page the company are pitching their ideas.
A Pokémon MMO would involve a huge world for players to roam about in simultaneously, co-operate and complete - being able to see and communicate with real human players.
The company have also drafted up ideas for an online James Bond game and an MMO featuring folk from the X-Men universe.
Would a smaller developer be able to take on such a big project? In any case some fresh ideas from smaller studios could be the inspiration needed to take the series further.
Thanks to C3 reader Echoes221 for the tip.

You can get them if you transfer from FireRed/LeafGreen. But it would be bizarre if it DID have them otherwise, they're starters. :p
Without transferring from the GBA games, D/P has EVERY Pokemon except old starters and legendaries.( Edited 19.05.2008 17:54 by Ikana )

I think it's wrong. There are so many things they could do better, like CoOp between friends...
Problems:
- You won't have name freedom, you'll have to have stupid numbers and underscores in it.
- (Assuming there's a half-decent create-a-trainer mode) Want to play as May or Dawn? Join the other millions of people already doing it, what originality!
- Red eyes, grey hair, black clothes and swords all over the place
- Over 9000 people with the prefix "mary-sue"
- For some reason there will be millions and millions of Ho-Oh, Mew, Arceus etc, despite there only being a few or less in the entire Pokémon world.
- looking 4 mew becomes lfm, and suddenly EVERYONE is saying it.
- Professor Oak would get a hernia
- I would get a hernia
- Overpopulation would end the world earlier than predicted
- People would be trying to cyber poor Misty
- Gaming websites worldwide would be shut down from overcrowding
- Unless it's Pay to Play (which would be awful anyway) then we're definitely looking at Runescape/Gaia Online sized mass destruction.
As a Pokémon fan I would be deeply insulted by this!
EDIT: Good thing it'll probably [/i]never[/i] happen hey? Nintendo have a choice to make:
1. Release an MMO to millions of complaining parants after their kids have been called "fat" or "smelly" or "bad" or "rubbish" online, THEN they're actually sworn at!
2. Pitch it as a 12/16+. LOL.( Edited 19.05.2008 19:42 by SuperLink )

noneWould never happen, as has been said, purely because of the Pedo-phobia that Nintendo has.
It is, however, a brilliant idea, it wouldn't even have to be a main chapter in the series (as most people here are seemingly assuming). It could be yet another of the endless spin-offs. But, you know, a good one...

IanSL half those points are bullshit so I won't respond to them plus I'm sure there would be a half-decent create-a-trainer mode. Legendary pokemon would obviously be ALOT harder to catch.( Edited 19.05.2008 19:47 by Ian The Great )

Link / SuperLink9It just wouldn't be like the world they've always been trying to convey... it would be filled to the brim with noobs called "cool_guy_5638869629" and his female equivalent, or fan characters called "Hunter_Raven_XZYBA"
That's not Pokémon >.<
I'd be incredibly skeptic. I have playedi Runescape so I believe my view holds water.
The mature audience for Pokémon in a minority. The sales go to the kids, and any older players are hardcore players would wouldn't give the kids a chance. The audience just doesn't work.
Harder to catch legendaries? Nintendo will lose it's target audience completely. They won't sell a huge game to a minority hardcore group.( Edited 19.05.2008 20:00 by SuperLink )

IanHarder as in you have to put more effort into finding them and catching them. This would make more sense money-wise as in the harder the game the longer the time your playing it and more money for nintendo.
And it's only a name of a character if they are noobs you can mute them.

Doesn't solve the problem of Pokémon's audience. Legies are hard enough for kids to catch as it is. Make them harder to find and catch and Nintendo's target audience will throw a strop and give up. Also MMOs are not for kids, but Pokémon is.
As much as you want to imagine so, Pokémon is targeted at kids. The teen/adult hardcore market is very niche. We may love it more that those kids too, but Nintendo want our money not our love. They won't make an MMO for a niche.

First and foremost, why hasn't Nintendo already made a game like this? This is the IDEAL genre for pokemon, period.
And for those saying there will be noobs, I have this to say: Pokemon is easily the entry level RPG for anybody who owns a DS. On top of that, EVERYBODY knows about pokemon, and many people have either played, or own a pokemon game. So seeing as how the world has been in knowledge of pokemon for about a decade, how would there be noobs in an online pokemon game? Granted, if the developers changed many things around to make it really complicated, then I can see noobs popping out, but this is pokemon we are talking about, pretty straight foward.
Anyways...
These are my thoughts that I feel would make an MMO Pokemon game great fun:
Of course, there would be the standard gym battles against NPC's, but what if players can form "guilds" and, provided they had the funding, create, and customize their own gym for other players to earn badges from?
Or how about taking it old school and making the standard game contain Kanto and Jhoto, whereas the expansions can include Hoenn and Sinnoh? Not to mention the Orange islands and Ore (not sure on spelling for this region).
They can even include brand new areas that players can discover while surfing or flying.
Also, what if the Pokemon League were held in tiers- meaning there would be different competitions for trainers who have 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40 badges?
It could also be taken a step further and made so that the Elite Four are NPC's that are extremely tough trainers, and whoever manages to beat them will be the Champ. A champ who will have to defend his/her title from every player who manages to beat the elite four.
Most of these ideas are no brainers, and that's exactly why they should be implemented, because Pokemon, from its very inception, was meant to be an MMO someday.

I didn't mean it as in the developers of the original games wanted to make an MMO out of the series one day; I meant it as in Pokemon, as a series- taking into account the gameplay, the massive worlds, the fun you have owning another trainer through multiplayer- was "destined" to become an MMO someday.
But to be honest, I don't think it can and should be done without making a PROPER (You hear me Genius Sonority?) fully 3D Pokemon game on the Wii.
I think that once that type of Pokemon game can be finally nailed, Nintendo, and whoever develops the MMO, will have at least laid out some of the ground work of how a 3D Pokemon game should be.

IkanaUgh...look...a Pokémon MMO just wouldn't work...the battle system isn't suited for it...the userbase isn't suited for it...the console isn't suited for it...just...no. As a huge Pokémon fan myself, I can honestly say that a Pokémon MMO would be the worst direction the series could go.
Just add some proper multiplayer co-op. That would be awesome.
To me, that clearly shows that they don't give a damn about the actual Pokemon series. They're just a small new developer, that wants to make some easy cash by using some already popular franchises.( Edited 20.05.2008 13:25 by Ikana )

noneA Pokemon MMO would rock. Did you ever play Pokemon Crater before it was pulled? That's what a Pokemon MMO should be like. But with a cohesive world instead of just maps, and more gyms and leagues and stuff.
And the ability to ignore everyone except your friends. To prevent noobs from annoying you. But if you want the big world with everyone in it you can have that too.
