Nintendo Clarifies Star Expiration, Launches Online Media Centre

By Adam Riley 03.06.2008 3

It has been quite a while since hearing about when the Club Nintendo Stars would expire, but Nintendo Europe has now clarified matters. The official newsletter that was sent out today states,

Per the Terms and Conditions of the Nintendo Loyalty Program, some users? Stars will begin expiring at the end of June. Stars that have been in your account for 24 months will expire at the end of the 24th month. Starting 1 June, you can log in to your Club Nintendo account to see if you have any Stars that are about to expire. If you spend your Stars in June, the ones about to expire will be the first used for purchasing items. Learn more about the expiration at our Terms and Conditions page.

And following on from this, according to the official Terms & Conditions,

The maximum amount of Stars you can earn in total may be limited by Nintendo with a notice period of 1 week. This does not apply to Stars you have already earned at the moment of notice. The Stars expire 24 months after they have been earned, so that unredeemed Stars which are older than 24 months will be deleted from your account. Stars you have earned before the introduction of the new Terms and Conditions expire 12 months after the introduction of the new Terms and Conditions, which will not occur until June 1, 2008.

If you subscribe to the Nintendo Newsletter, you will be informed about your current Stars Balance and how many Stars will be deleted in the next four weeks. There will be a monthly clearing of all Stars earned after the introduction of the new Terms and Conditions which are older than 24 months.

In addition to this, Nintendo Europe now offers a Media Centre on the official website, letting readers gain access to the latest screenshots and video footage of all games on Nintendo DS and Wii.

My question is: why?

Why remove stars? What's the point? If people want to hang on to them so they can afford a higher priced item from the star catalogue, why not let them? The items from there are nothing compared to what Japan and other countries get. I mean yeah, a Nintendo t-shirt might be cool, but whatever happened to getting games like we used to? Or for once just give us something really cool like limited edition controllers/consoles only available from the site.

If I've got the wrong end of the stick about this news, please tell me. I haven't spent a fair amount of stars in a while though, as I was hoping I'd be able to save them for something special. But I guess I'll end up buying a t-shirt or two to use them up now. Providing they update their stock of course. Everything's sold out at the moment -_-

Well at least you guys got something... Our "My Nintendo" Memberships (in the US) have not offered us anything really special (except "The Legend Of Zelda Collection" & that pink kirby stylus) or even a point system... I'm jealous of you guys really. Your country put out a much better effert in my opinion. Smilie

I think the idea of retiring them is ridiculous. We're forced to do a survey on each product we register, so they get 'paid' for each one. Now where's our incentive to tell the truth? I'd just skim through the whole piece of shit now knowing I'll never be able to accumulate enough points for something good like the zelda statue.
