Two Tribes on Toki Tori WiiWare

By Jorge Ba-oh 04.06.2008 2

Developer Two Tribes recently discussed Toki Tori development and hopes for a sequel.

Speaking to Games Cathedral, Two Tribes's Martijn Reuvers comments on the decisions to work with Nintendo's download service, differences between the GameBoy version and the enhanced take on Wii as well as hopes for more Toki Tori in the future.

In 2001 you brought "Toki Tori" on the Game Boy Color. Now you remaked the game for WiiWare. What was the reason to bring the game a second time up?

Toki Tori was released at a very unfortunate time: September 12th 2001, the day after... And the Gameboy Advance was already released in the US. Retailers were reluctant to take on new GBC titles, as you can imagine. Despite all this, Toki Tori received some great feedback and reviews from the world-press. That's why we always felt that Toki Tori deserved another chance.

Since when is the WiiWare version in development and how many people worked on it?

We started working on the Wii version around a year ago and I think on average we worked with four people on it. Obviously we increased the man-power at the end of the project.

What are the differences between the WiiWare version and the Game Boy Color version? Is there additional content? Will there be download content (maybe some extra levels at easter?

That's a great idea ;-) And we have considered DLC for a while. However in order to hit the launch date you need to make some concessions. We decided to release a game literally packed with levels instead. Toki Tori features over 70 levels, which should keep you busy for dozens of hours, a claim some retail games can't even make.

We redesigned some of the original levels, blocking alternate routes etc. But we also designed completely new levels for the WiiWare version, just to be sure we didn't disappoint the people that already bought the original GBC version.

Apart from level content, we completely rewrote the game from scratch, redesigned the main character, boosting up his pixel count, added lively background, catchy music etc. The game has been improved from his GBC ancestor in every possible way.
