MIT Bring Wii Gaming to the Blind

The Gambit Game Lab, part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have unveiled AudiOdyssey, a Wii title specially designed for the blind.

The game is based around the idea of Sound and Rhythm, an area where both the regular Games player and the visually-impaired can be on the same level.

AudiOdyssey is an experimental computer game designed to be accessible to both the visually impaired community and mainstream gamers. The user stars as Vinyl Scorcher, an up-and-coming DJ, on his quest to get club patrons dancing. Swinging the Nintendo Wii controller to the beat, Vinyl lays down the various component tracks of a song, and keeps the party jumping. If he does an especially good job, he can even freestyle! But beware - if dancers get too rowdy, they're likely to bump into the turntables, messing up Vinyl's tracks. Think you have what it takes?

AudiOdyssey was developed with four research goals:

    * The visually-impaired and the sighted can enjoy the same level and quality of gameplay
    * Navigate game's menus with ease and efficiency approaching that of conventional UIs
    * Create a fun and natural control scheme using the Wiimote
    * An engaging game that relies more on high quality audio than visuals

AudiOdyssey can also be played with a regular Keyboard, for those without a Wii, from the game's Official site.

A trailer of the game in action can be found here.

Have your say on this intriguing new game below.

    Nice idea.
Allthough I cant help thinking theres a huge untapped market for portable audio-only games.
Maybe played on ipods or something.

Theres some DS Homebrew that ports a choose-your-own adventure like thingy.
But something designed ground up would be obviously superiour.

I'm registered blind, and I play games fine. Then again, I'm not really blind, just can't see from far away thus meaning i'm only registered.

Thanks for the interest! Unfortunately, there is one thing that should be clarified -- AudiOdyssey isn't a Wii game, it's a game developed in Flash to run on PCs with optional Wiimote connectivity via Bluetooth.

And Darkflame, that's an idea that we've kicked around once or twice already but haven't pursued it yet. We've got a couple of folks in our lab that are really into radio dramas, so maybe someday!
