Laurent Fischer: Only Geeks Want Hard Drives (Update)

By Jorge Ba-oh 15.06.2008 39

Update: In a statement to Videogaming 247, Fischer spoke on his recent outburst claiming those who wanted a hard-drive were limited to "geeks and otaku".

I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn't use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence.

I regret that this misunderstanding has created such offence and disappointment within the community.

Original Story: Nintendo's Laurent Fischer recently commented on the Wii system memory situation once again.

The latest issue of UK gaming magazine Edge (issue 190) reveals a cheeky comment from Nintendo of Europe's managing director of marketing. When quizzed about the lack of a Wii hard-drive and limited memory onboard, he replied that only "geeks and otaku" would be people who would need one.

How do you feel about Nintendo's continual dismissal about the Wii hard-drive situation? With a growing catalogue of WiiWare and virtual console games, it seems it would need to be addressed eventually.

Thanks to the folks at NeoGAF for the tip.

Laurelin's right. Why would Nintendo include the VC feature and advertise it so heavely if they weren't expecting their hardcore audience on board? Or if they weren't expecting to "turn" some casual gamers into more hardcore gamers?

Nintendo are hypocrites. At least this guy is.

Nintendo pretty much lost me last year after SMG. I've lost interest in waiting months for the next decent game, only to find I once again got over-hyped and it wasn't worth it. I bought a 360 and never looked back, just being able to talk to your friends as you kill them is reason enough.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

If i see this guy on Mario Kart im definatly gonna call him a 'noob'! =D

Do you think this comment may have been made on pupose to one of the biggest and best Game mags as a detorant? Then its addressed at E3 and nintendo have always been aware?

That would be a wicked conspiracy!

If you ever catch him in Mario Kart I bet he's the only Wii Hitler.

Um... No?... I just want a HDD.

I sold my soul to Sony for a PS3...

Nintendo grow more pathetic by the day.

Pft, wimp. Reggie wouldn't have apologised. He'd have been all "The next person to whine about a HDD gets a bazooka to the face!". Because Reggie's hardcore.

Laurent is a loooooosah. Laurent smells. Laurent wants Reggie in his pants.

There, I'm done for today.

I dont know why people are takin this so seriously and they are offended!?!?!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Not taking what he said seriously necessarily, but the way they push off their hardcore fans and use an awful excuse for a lack of harddrive as "only geeks want that lol!"

It's pathetic.

You can go shove that apology up your ass. The only apology I'm accepting is a hard drive. And hell I'm going to be paying for that so just do it already!

Who's up for a Nintendo-only, three times more expensive and dually slow hard drive that'll be permanently sold out?

Meeeee! yeah!

Oh wait. Geek alert.

A little analogy:

Say your Wii running out of memory is equivalent to death.

This ^ May be a fate worse than death. Epic stuff. (Nintendo smell 3: )

I know Ninty's trying to appeal to casual gamers and all, but this really does take the McVities factory...

Burning its bridges with the hardcore and damn patient customers when so many games have continually been delayed...even a 5 year old would realise that equals a big no-no. They'd better shell out some memory solution for that major slip up!

Piiiiii...ka.....SUEEEEEEE!

Just announced by Reggie...

"in order to please all geeks of the world, Nintendo will bundle HD-DVD drives with there Wii's. I've got a pal called Bill whos cool with selling them cheap....!"
