Nintendo to Sue Nyko

By Shane Jury 14.06.2008 15

Third-Party Peripheral makers Nyko are being sued by Nintendo over their Wireless Wii Nunchuk.

According to Wired, Nintendo claims that its add-on controller for Wii violates their patents and trademarks.

Nintendo state that the Nunchuk model, pictured above, bears too much resemblance to their official line of controllers;

(It) wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller.

um... wasn't that the point of third party controllers... Smilie

I think what they're saying is that the Wireless Nunchuk uses patented materials from the official one, in which case I don't blame them for suing. Business is business after all.Smilie

Uh, don't most third party controllers do this? What a load of bollocks.

I always wondered about the total lack of 3rd party Wii controllers. Nintendo are being very overprotective with their newness. It annoys me :/ they seem stuck up.

I didn't expect this at all. Nintendo really do want every penny for themselves, don't they? I know it's business, but damn. It just seems a bit over the top.

While it's easy to criticise Nintendo for this, they, Sony and Microsoft get sued for the pettiest things aswell sometimes.

As for 3rd party peripherals, they usually have some crap design and have cheap plastic. Maybe this nunchuk is a little too similar.

Don\'t really give a toss, though anything which potentially harms Nintendo is a good thing in my book. It\'s not as if Nintendo have never nicked anyone else\'s design, either.

Heh, I'll have to buy this product! Must be pretty decent if Nintendo are suing them over it.

What...but people like this product. That's just weird.

It makes me almost want one... But I'd prefer a Wire Wii-Mote so I wouldn't have to deal with batteries.

Also this seems like a bad move for Nintendo. Maybe Nyko can solve the HDD problem too. Maybe making Nintendo even more pissed.

I sold my soul to Sony for a PS3...

That is what I thought as well. Nyko products are pretty reliable as well. Wireless ftw.

That's surely one point of them sueing them?
The reason people like it is because it's not some crappy nunchuk, it's pretty much identical to the Nintendo one. That isn't good for Nintendo lol.

I just think it's Nintendo's fault for not coming up with this faster, but then again the Numchuk's would look identical if not for the light, button and Niko branding (and obviously no wires). You can obviously see where Nintendo are coming from, would you like someone ripping off you design?

Maybe we should worry less about sueing people and focus more on our storage problem issue. Smilie

I'd buy one if it was brown.

Less posty, more gamey.
