EA: Boom Blox Sales Meet Expectations

By Jorge Ba-oh 18.06.2008 12

EA CEO John Riccitiello recently discussed sales of the company's Spielberg-directed Wii-exclusive, Boom Blox.

The game's initial sales, 60,000 in the United States, have been brought up recently as fairly poor for a title backed by the legendary film producer. It ranked 25th on the all-formats sales chart, 9th in the Wii selection and has had fairly strong scores across the board - including 9/10 on Cubed³.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Riccitiello commented on the differences between core franchises and the more casual selection like Boom Blox - "To be honest, I think everything in casual makes us all challenge our assumptions." He reveals that the approach with core games is to at least market for at least 5 months, driving players to retail on day one. The casual market on the other hand has a "much flatter, much longer curve and one with which, frankly, EA has relatively little experience in." Casual gamers are casual and the relaxed approach to buying new software may not force players to buy on day one, perhaps taking more care into what games make the cut.

Right now, [Boom Blox] has met our expectations internally based on the model that was put forward by Kathy [Vrabeck] and her team. It has continued to sell well - it did break into the Top Ten for the Wii.

A title like this one...Can it do several hundred thousand or a million or more units? Sure, it just has to keep selling.

He concludes that the company aren't ready to add Boom Blox to their list of failed titles, and still have hopes for the title doing well at retail.

I think it's one of those games which "casual gamers" have yet to notice properly and the "hardcore" won't buy it until it's gone down in price.

It's great that EA are putting out quality titles like this. All around good reviews and perfect for both audiences, this is what I want to see more of on Wii (not this game precisely... you know what I mean)

I'll probably be getting it soon. Yet again; money is the issue (but mainly because I spend all my money on PS2 games atm...)

Yes, SuperLink said it very well: I bought it and am happy with it. But I initially thought 'let me buy it some times later, it doesn't actually run away and goes out of attention'. and that's the case: others may think the same and buy it later on. And I am absolutely astounded that EA gets it. They did a great business model in thinking, that it does sell well long term. You can not break into the market in a rush. all other try it *cough* Ubisoft *cough*.
Nintendo proves that you can sell a bunch! But they never took Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Co lightly. It may be look easy made, but it isn't.
And the quality EA delivered with Boom Blox is immense. For EA, that is...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I'm going to buy it, but after a price drop in shops or something Smilie

My cousin and I both reacted to BoomBlox in the same way. We both got excited when we read the positive reviews, went to go buy it and then stopped when we realized it was $50. I am hoping to pick it up when it drops to around $30, however I do have some Gift Cards that I might use on it.

Also, did this game come out in Japan yet? It would seem like a solid win over there.

Tut tut tut, art style.. it would be so different if it were not for that. Great game tho, love it.

My bro rented but I never really saw it. He liked and has it for his birthday. I guess I might play it then.

My pictures wont appear so heres a smiley

Well if this doesn\'t sell more all we will see is more shovelware from EA.

People should run out and buy it now to show EA that good quality games (ok I know it\'s not great but it\'s good) actually do sell.

It has sold over 200,000 by now and it hasn't been released in Japan. It will probably do over 700,000 units sold between not and December 31st 2008 and probably over a million come March 31st 2009.

I'll buy it when it drops a bit in price. And when I'm starting to not be occupied with SSBB.

Boom Blox was a game I was immediately put off by. I didn't like the look of it, I didn't like the style and I didn't like the gameplay mechanic and to be honest I was very shocked by the reviews it received.

Overall not one for me, but I do have to say kudos to EA for making such a widely appreciated game.

Would have sold at least 1 more if they put the headtracking it :p
