World of Goo to see Retail Release in Europe

The long-awaited Wii title World of Goo will hit store shelves instead of WiiWare in Europe, according to the developers of the game, 2D Boy.

    Commenting on Wiiware-World, 2D Boy's Ron Carmel had this to say, regarding the appearance of the game on Nintendo's European Retail Listings;

Our European publisher, RTL Playtainment, is planning to release both the Wii and PC versions as retail titles. We're going to add some extra content to the European version that won't be available in North America or Japan.

Extra content: We're not sure how much extra content there will be, we're still figuring that out with RTL.

Price: It's not going to be a budget title, but I don't know if it will be "full price" either. This up to RTL and their distribution network to figure out. They're going to be presenting the game at the Leipzig GC... that might be a good place to ask them about pricing.

WiiWare vs. Retail: RTL is experienced in bringing retail games to market. They've also dealt fairly and honestly with us and that means a lot to us after experiences we've had with other publishers. In general, Kyle and I favor digital distribution because when you go retail there are a lot of people making money off the game and there's a much smaller piece left for the developer. Retail does have one significant advantage over digital though: publishers are use to paying an advance for a game. After having worked on this game for over a year, burning through savings and getting into debt we were simply nearing the end of our runway and it started being pretty important for us to get some money coming in. RTL was there to help us. We're trying to compensate for the price difference by making some exclusive content for the European version, but we know that some people will still be annoyed that the game will cost more in Europe. We're sad about that, because we just want people to play the game and have fun. We'd be giving it away for free if we didn't need to eat and pay rent.

    Smilie That sucks a lot.

"Not a budget title"... So instead of a €15 download, we'll get a €40 retail game?

I really really want this game, but now I might wait until it's a bit cheaper. Like with Boom Blox.

I swear to God, this game only makes sense as a download. Until I can find this for a tenner or less I'm simply not buying it, simple as that.

What this really means is that a £10 game on WiiWare is going to cost £30 boxed. That's simply a rip off, and adding a couple of extra levels is not going to make up for the fact that the cost will be trebled.

Right, thats 9 out of 10 sales lost staight away.

    Seriously, what are they thinking?!

I understand the need for cash, but this isnt going to help them.
Why do they need a publisher at all?
Isnt the whole point of DD that you dont need those middlemen?

And the publisher themselfs must either have paid them very very little for their work OR have been hugely optimistic with how many sales they are going to get.

Shame, gone from top of the Wiiware list, to somewhere on the retail list. I wish Nintendo had a decent online infrastructure where you could buy wiiware games from different territories.

So I guess those publishers were interested in the game, and 2D Boy needed money? Very weird move, I hope it fails and they'll release it on WiiWare after all.

If it fails they'll probably not bother at all.

If it's getting extra content then we should be wandering how much will there be to justify whatever price it'll end up being.

Its nothing to do with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are in the same boat.
Legal reasons prevent cross-region online distribution.

Even major pc distros are effected.
A game has to be rated seperately for each region.

"Extra content: We're not sure how much extra content there will be, we're still figuring that out with RTL."

So extra content enough to justify more than double the price of the Wii Ware game?, I fucking doubt it. This is nothing more than a scam to bleed money of European gamers.

What a load of shite. If anyone here buys this game with a few tiny additions over the US version, stuff that they are only working on now, you are fucking crazy. If you don't like this crap make it known by keeping your wallet in your pocket.

I will get a cracked copy of the PC game instead. There is no way in hell I am getting this on Wii.

The only way I'm buying this now is when/if the price crashes down to about £10 or less.

Last time I went round to one of my friends he was downloading some Japanese stuff from the Japanese PS3 store, is this just a Japanese section of the European store? I don't have a PS3 so don't know.

Still a shame for these guys as the effort they've put in to making a solid game is easy to see, and it was a game I was pretty much going to get, but now it's retail I doubt I will. Not their fault, but it's sad to see a missed opportunity and Europeans get screwed again.

I hope this game bombs seriously in Europe, if it does not Wii owners in Europe will be paying a greater price in future, just wait and see. This will not be the first time this sort of thing will happen.

I'm not sure about this...I would think that even though the WiiWare strategy costs less, more people would buy it therefore giving them more money. We'll see I guess.

I assume that the only reason they went to a publisher is that they were desperately out of money. They might have needed it to finish the game.
Because I figure selling it on WiiWare for €15 still gives them more profit than selling it on a disc for €50.

And oh yeah, today I was in a toy store and I was amazed at the prices. Games that are budget titles in America, go for a full price here (Zack&Wiki, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, etc.).

You've got to feel for these two guys who have had to remortgage and get loans, it must be very stressful in that situation and for them I hope World of Goo does very well.

I'm not buying Okami, House of the Dead, until I can get them for US dollar equivalents on principle even though I'd like to have them.

No shit!?! You know why Wii doesn't sell great games here but only crap, that has a license or good games that come from Nintendo? That's why, too! Why pay 50 bucks (Eurobucks, that's 1.5 times Dollarbucks!) for an unknown game like Zack & Wiki, when you can buy license crap like Ironman or Bionicle for 20 Eurobucks?

And to be honest: I seldom buy DS games, because I feel 40 EUR for a title on a small screen isn't worth the money (Even if they put a lot of effort and money into it. It just doesn't feel like being worth it!). And surely I won't buy World of Goo for 50 bucks, either. Even not for 40! Hell, it's just a bunch of extra levels I seldom play through games anyway!
RTL Playtainment is a part of a German (or Luxemburghian) private TV station. They do these rip-offs all the time. These guys brought us crap like 'Autobahn-Raser' (I hope you UKs didn't got this evil crap!) and they don't know the market. They are only into grapping money with a calculated risk. Even this calculation may bomb in their hands if all think like we do. And it seems so.
I am sorry for 2D Boy, meaning they will fall flat on their noses with this deal in Europe. I only pay 15 EUR. 20 if it's got a nice package and a disk. Not more.
I find your lack of faith disturbing!
