Nintendo UK has responded to recent disc issues plaguing Smash Bros. Brawl owners.
In the forums there have been problems with discs not running on European machines - due to possible dust on lenses.
Are you having disc issues? Should Nintendo have taken better precautions to ensure Wii owners who have waited months are satisfied?

In the forums there have been problems with discs not running on European machines - due to possible dust on lenses.
If you have recently purchased Super Smash Bros. Brawl and are experiencing technical problems playing the game on your Wii, please read the following information to learn how this issue can be resolved.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilities a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialised cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.
If you are experiencing disc read errors, please contact consumer Support. They will provide information regarding sending your Wii to Nintendo to have the disc drive lens cleaned. There is no cost for the repair or shipping. (Please note: Returning the disc to the retail store will not solve the problem. We encourage users who are experiencing issues with playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl to utilise Nintendo's repair service.)
Due to the nature of this particular issue, Wii owners should not lose any of their stored data, such as Virtual Console games and WiiWare software. In some rare cases you may have to re-download this software from the Wii Shop Channel, but there is no cost to doing so.

Well if the dust/dirt theory from Nintendo is true, I can't think what they could have done short of asking for everyone to send their Wii in for cleaning last month so that it would be ready in time for Brawl.

It was a significant manufacturing error on Nintendo's part when they were designing Wii. No proper lense should have difficulty reading dual-layered DVD discs. Why Nintendo assumed no Wii games would be released on such format is beyond me.

How can you possibly say it's not an issue? The fact the console has an inherent flaw that restricts certain discs being read (any decent lens should read dual layered DVD's, even if the lens is a bit dusty) shows up once again the cost cutting that happened in Wii production.

Then again nintendo were looking for a cheap, console for the consumers. So that it was the most affordable console around. Although, this flaw does ask certain questions of why they didn't think any game would need to go beyound a standard disk. They probably thought if any needed it they could just make a game a 2-disk set like in the gamecube era.

True, it reeks of a console built to a budget, a very very tight budget and yet it'll get no negative press for it.
Microsoft did the same and they had the red ring fiasco costing them billions. Sony went the other way and built with cost not an object, still get stick for too expensive a console. Nintendo built a cheap console, have problems and get away with it? No wonder the company is getting away with producing absolute rubbish for the console, it's formerly very picky fanbase is now accepting absolutely anything from them.

Unless you have stuff to show this'll cost them billions or is on anywhere near the scale of RROD, then go ahead.
Will just have to wait and see how many it genuinely affects. It might be a small percentage, might not be. Anyone know how widespread it is across other forums?
People keep saying they need a reason to dust off their Wii - maybe this'll force them to get the hoover in it once in a while. Are there nozzle attachments that'll fit inside the disc slot?

Never had a problem with SSBB loading on my console and it has been doing so for months.
I believe Nintendo is telling the truth about this and dirt CAN get into te disc since the Wii has a loading slot and not a tray. Just take better care of your console and clean your house regularly.

Of course. Dust are a very tiny particles, it can make technology unable to read the files. Dust is one of Technologies most weakness. Unless you have plastic that protects it anyway. " style='color: #8C1F1A'>

I'm thinking, that almost everyone will need to use this service eventually. Think about it, if it's not dusty now it'll have to be a year or six months down the road (unless you clean the inside of the wii somehow yourself). It's better to happen now than to happen the day you get animal crossing or pikmin 3.

Once again? Are we talking GPU meltdown due to WC24?

Not on the scale of the 360's mountainous errors though, not by a long shot. In any case, browse about and you'll see people ridiculing this "excuse". The ridicule just isn't to 360 standard and deservedly so.
it's formerly very picky fanbase is now accepting absolutely anything from them.
Look around and you'll see that Nintendo's former fanbase, i.e. some of us, are not happy with the rubbish that is being released on the Wii. It's the new fanbase who don't care.( Edited 28.06.2008 19:09 by shiptoncraig )

I'd like to say that i dont have the problem but after inserting some discs my Wii makes a very dodgy noise indeed. I dread to think what kinda noise it will make when Brawl goes in.
Just fix it the old Nintendo way and blow it.
Isnt there some kinda disc that you can insert to clean the lens? Man, shipping the thing off to Nintendo seems very inconvienient. The thing has only been out for 18 months or so and if these problems are evident then do we need to send it off every 18 months or so to get it cleaned to play Smash or other dual layered discs. Absoultely shockinG!

For all Eurepean people:
This problem exists since the release of Smash in Japan. In America they had the some problem. It's not only the cigars, also live in heavy contaminated places will also affect.
The lens of the Wii is smaller than the usual one, for the size of the Wii itself, for that the lens it's a bit more sensible to dust. Here's in Chile, for example, the only ones with problems were a little group from Santiago, the most contaminated place in my country. I live in Valpara?, the second most contaminated place in Chile, and I don't have any problems with reading the game. A normal lens anyway will stop reading stuff thanks to dust someday, and I had some problems with reading games (Kingdom Hearts II) from a PS2.
The lens of a Wii is different from a normal one not because it's cheaper, because it's smaller. While it's true it's their fault, they offer a good way for Smash owners to somewhat fix the problem, even in my country, where they just have an official distributor. And it's true, it's from a small percentage.
The only way for take better precautions is, somehow, change all the Wiis with this problem and right away clean it, but, how? You have no idea if the problem will exist without a Smash Copy and clean all the Wiis since launch to the moment they change the lens (They will do it, I'm sure) and that is pretty darn expensive. Appart, anyone will actually send the Wii in advance for prepare it for Brawl if they don't have any idea if they will have the trouble after all? Nintendo hates lose money. If they are actually offering a service like this one and free is because it's an actual minimal percentage.
@HazukiSan
Nintendo Fans are still picky, trust me. If in Japan they don't yell about this problem, this service will never exists in first place. They make it official even in places they don't have actual presence. That I call good service. And, appart, in Nintendo are humans, they can commit mistakes (It's not a Ring of Death after all)

I don't think it would have a huge deal to do with building the console to a budget, it wouldn't have made any noticable difference to manufacturing or retail pricing to just put in a better lens.

I just love how Nintendo isnt Microsoft. If it was, it would cost money. I know that people want to play Brawl but at least its not lack of Brawl and lack of money. Thank god it hasnt happened to me, I guess it would be a different story if it had though

I still have and play my SNES a heck of a lot and it still works pretty much perfectly. The wiring in the power adaptor is a bit fucked but that's it.
The fact that my decade-and-a-half year old console still works fine while "a small percentage" of Wiis have to be shipped away to be cleaned so they can play one of Nintendo's biggest flagship titles just shows how Nintendo have changed.

In many cases it's bad luck, some is good luck.
I mean i have had my Wii since launch and i've had no problems what-so-ever.
And the same when i bought my xbox [original] It was supposed to have an error in the console making it possibly catch on fire, yet we never had that problem. So in many cases it can be just luck of things.
It's like saying in our house that is fairly clean, and we have never smoked, we could still get the problem. It just depends.
