Goldeneye Influences for Quantum of Solace

The team behind Activision's debut Bond title, Treyarch, recently discussed the forthcoming game.

Speaking with Joystiq (via GoNintendo), design director Jeremy Luyties was quizzed on the game's influences, in particular the best Bond title to date: Goldeneye.

The gold standard for movie video games is still GoldenEye, and that wasn’t because it looked like the film, but because of the gameplay. Do you guys feel pressure to live up to that?

Well, there’s two ways to look at it. One way is to see it as pressure, and the other way is to look at it like… what other video game could you ever work on that people have been playing for more than 10 years, and use that to learn from? I think it’s a huge advantage.

Is the pressure there? Sure. That’s cool. I mean, we’re very influenced by GoldenEye, and we’re also very thankful that a game like that came out that we can learn from. You’ll see a lot of little homages in the game, like when you bring up the map, you’ll see your hand come up, almost like the watch in GoldenEye. There are a lot of little hidden things like that in the game. They’re like little messages from us as a developer, saying “Thank you guys for creating such a great game. Here’s our respectful take on that experience.” What a huge opportunity.

Canadian studio Beenox is helping out with the Wii version, having handled numeous PC ports and RPG, Pillars of Garendall.

Quantum of Solace: The Video Game is due to hit stores in the UK alongside the film release on October 31st 2008.

Doesn't every Developer that says they want to live up to a certain standard of videogame usually fail, miserably?

Treyarch aren't exactly the best developer in the word(refering to CoD3).

Lets hope they don't mean that other Goldeneye game(jokes).

Well its not good to get influences from a 10 year old game, various FPS have one-uped since then.

Yeah, this is the usual sales patter.

The 360 game looks good if a very much like a typical Unreal3 shooter.

Well for the last 10years only EA have had the license and never came close to gaming goodness like Goldeneye.

Activision have at least put some time into this game. I cant think when the last actual bond game was out? Was Die another day/casion royale made into a game?

I find those games have only innovated and improved upon things like controls, online gameplay, etc. To me, while they are both great games, they're just two more shooters in an overcrowded and overused genre. I've yet to see anything really change a shooter from the ground up and shake the perceptions and expectations of future games in the genre.

Maybe I'm just odd haha.

Well halo made the whole reengergizing shield concept pretty popular and also the way your limited to two weapons rather tha unrealistically carry a whole pack of guns in your invisable bag.
