Masahiro Sakurai Discusses Smash Bros. Sequel

Masahiro Sakurai recently discussed the prospect of having to consider a Smash Bros. sequel in the future.

Since heading the Wii version the legendary designer had always taken the approach that it would be the last in the series, but recently speaking to ONM, he's expressed concerns that he may have to consider ideas for a potential sequel. Sakurai goes onto reveal that certain undisclosed features and characters had to be cut due to time constraints, along with the need to do something fairly different to justify a sequel.

It's taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development.

What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn't. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time constraints. I had a lot more characters, for example, but sadly I can't discuss which ones didn't make it.

There are 39 characters in the game this time around and just adding a few more wouldn't be enough to justify a new game in my opinion; I'd have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach to make it worthwhile. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that's what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider.

Fans had critised the game for a lack of variety between some characters, and disappointment at the inclusion of multiple clones.

With that in mind, would you support a sequel or updated version of Smash Bros. Brawl? Do you feel that features that made it this time round that could have been better?

I don\'t like downloadable content. That\'s a paycheck after you bought the game.

Well I love brawl. So superlink is not alone.

It is sooo much more balanced that we should be able to appreciate it more. I even figured out how to be decent with yoshi (hops are key there).

Characters missing? I\'d want Midna to be in there. Mewtwo was fun too, very odd, I like it.

Olimar is a sure hit though, IMO Smilie

edit: Oh, and it\'s not laggy. Your connection sucks, or your router sucks, people. My games are all fluid and snappy. Even strikers online rocks!

Honestly you can hardly better this game, its almost perfect. Better online and next-gen graphics is all that be brought to the table. This game has some of the highest production values I've ever seen in a game, maybe the highest.

Sounds like they have lots of ideas on what to add to the game. Enough so to definitely come out with a sequel on the Wii. I would buy it.

There are a couple of things to do to improve lag on a wireless router. They sped my Wii up a hundredfold. The Nintendo (of America?) website was very helpful. Service/troubleshooting section. I can look it up if you want.

It seriously made a HUGE difference. (1 hour system update that failed into a 30 second successful install)
Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not. Fear not.

Its obvious they will eventually make a new Smash Bros. Its become one of Nintendo's popular franchises.

I would have liked to see better online capabilities. Somewhat like Mario Kart. No lag and more fun to play.

Online was awful. It does not even record your Wins and Losses (It could have done say 10 pts for 1st, 5 pts for 2nd and 3 pts for 3rd) and this would have given me at least a bit of a reason to play. You can't see anyones names, you can't send the simple messages and you can't see how good or bad somebody is when you enter games with them. Couple all this with the fact that if they quit they are replaced with a CPU anyway and you are basically waiting a few minutes for something no better than a match against three CPU's, and at least if you play against them constantly you can unlock some stuff. Sort out the online and I will have an incentive to play online on the next SSB.

Apart from that complaint, I am thoroughly enjoying the game and have just unlocked Toon Link Smilie
Ask for my 3DS Friend Code, especially if you play Mario Kart 7 or Zen Pinball. I need to expand my friend list!

    smash bros: invitational/tag team.

    16 player tag team battles.

4 characters from each company (square, capcom, konami, etc)

Oh and absolutely huge 16 player online maps for 4 teams all to play at once.

New pkmn trainers (control a pokemon each)

Pikachu team (cycle between pichu, pikachu and raichu)

Advance wars character where every b button is a tactical command (eg defend me, to the skies, move out etc)for tiny 2d units easily knocked away and quickly replaced at random.)

A much bigger and better character specific adventure mode. Each companies team comes to the middle through an area desigened around those characters games.

I\'ve got more if you want.
