New Conduit Trailer, Details

By Shane Jury 10.07.2008 16

A short clip of High Voltage Software's The Conduit has been shown, along with new details on the game in a recent interview.

In the interview with IGN, H.V.S confirm their presence at E3 next week, and reconfirm that The Conduit will support Online Multiplayer for 16 gamers.

IGN: First of all, will The Conduit be at E3?

Eric Nofsinger: Yes we will be at E3! We are only doing private showings and leaving playable demos with a few select folks who we are anxious to get feedback and input from... like IGN, of course.

IGN: You still haven't announced a publisher. Have you gotten serious about aligning yourselves with one yet?

Eric: No, not until they give us what we want and tons of money. Oh, and a monkey. [Laughs]

We are taking it real slow. We aren't in any rush. This is something I probably could have been a bit more clear about before; we have our own funding to completion. We know we want a publisher, but we want it to be the right fit for the publisher, High Voltage, the game, and the fans that have so vocally supported us.

IGN: So tell us, what does the E3 build encapsulate?

Eric: The E3 demo is the first half of one of the later missions in the game. It will be showing off the majority of our alien enemies (the Drudge), several of our weapons, and very pretty environment. Story-wise, it gives a small taste of what the player will be doing and finding out after the Drudge invasion of Washington D.C. has begun. Though, I should probably note the demo will be hard set on Easy difficulty so that casual players can have a chance of seeing everything without having to build up the skill set they would normally need to play the mission.

IGN: How would you say the game has progressed since we last wrote about it?

Eric: The single-player portion of the game is near the point of being just bug fixes and fine tuning. And polish, polish, polish. A lot of our team and development effort is moving to multiplayer now.

IGN: You've said the controls will be fully customizable. How so? Have you looked at Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for inspiration?

Eric: Yes, Medal of Honor Heroes 2 was a source of inspiration, but we believe we've taken things even a step further. In MoHH2, you were able to adjust things like dead zone size, player turning speed and cursor sensitivity via a paused menu. In The Conduit, you can adjust these and other options in real time. That means you don't have to go back and forth to get the feel of your changes; you see them instantly and can tell if your adjustments are working for you. We are also taking some inspiration from Smash Bros. Brawl and will be allowing players to customize their control layouts. Don't like using the B button to shoot? Map it to the button you prefer. Like to use a certain Wii-Remote motion for something? You will be able to map to those too.

IGN: Sounds great. We've posted some new screens that show off some additional graphic effects for the game. How much of your tech are you hoping to implement into the final product?

Eric: All of it. [laughs] Seriously, we wouldn't be showing this stuff off if we weren't planning on using it and using it a lot. Some really fantastic graphical improvements came on line recently. Our artists and engineers are so amazing! I just wanted to give them all a big hug.

IGN: Tell us about the online experience you're hoping to deliver.

Eric: Our current multiplayer benchmarks are 16 players and we will definitely have the standard modes like Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. We are still exploring the possibilities and depending on how things go, we will have more. But we want to make certain that our online experience is solid and if that means sacrificing some other modes or features to do that, we will. We are choosing quality over quantity.

High Voltage wants to bring all of its tech to The Conduit.
IGN; We're all for that. A lot of Nintendo fans have been ecstatic about The Conduit, but there are some critics who say that the game offers little to distinguish itself from other FPS efforts. What is your position?

Eric: We've been so happy with the response we've received! It really fuels us to do our best. You know? Sure. I think it's fair that some folks are pointing out similarities to other FPS titles but I hope that they can see that was one of our primary goals to make a really solid fast-paced action shooter and that is the core of our game. Then we built the right differentiators on top of that foundation … we didn't want to be different just for the sake of being different. And I honestly believe we have some very unique and interesting gameplay via the All Seeing Eye device, a storyline that isn't set during World War II [laughs], a totally customizable control scheme and layout, and we've got some awesome high-quality graphics to boot. And this whole package is on the Wii, a platform that is crying out for a shooter like this like a desert cries out for rain. Even if I weren't making this game, it is the game I would want to buy for the Wii.

I must admit, this game really feels like a much needed breath of fresh air.

Could it live up to it? Great level design, strong online support should really make me long for perfect dark online no more.

That\'s very important we should remember: This may be no innovative shooter (aside from the Eye, I think, that\'s a nice touch to it, setting it aside from shooting only. I like puzzles, see Metroid Prime!), but it is a solid shooter on Wii. It gives us a lot we are crying for: good graphic (even if I think wall textures on buildings look a bit crap), solid gameing-feeling with Wiimote, being the best shooter-control-scheme there is (that\'s what keeps Red Steel alive for so long before being awkward, even I played it for a long time).

That\'s something I like a lot about The Conduit. If they already had a publisher, then this game never would have come into being. Publisher are very, very, very focussed on Wii being a shovelware-kiddy-causal platform. That\'s why they do development alone, I think.

I hope this game\'s also great to play.

/edit: I just watched the trailer. Wow, it looks great! very good lighting being implemented just recently I think. Wall textures are looking great up close, but still repitive from afar. I think it plays well. Bullet impact sounds when shooting the car there. It seems to be a fast paced game. It\'s looking better and better.

Heck, I sound like a commercial for The Conduit. But I so want this game to be extremely good, because I have to support these guys in buying it.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

They still have 9 months of development time left, so what we see now will undoubtedly get better. Smilie

As long as Ubisoft don\'t end up being the Publisher, there\'s a fair chance I\'ll be picking this one up. Smilie

well online is good for them that like that stuff

I think this is looking really good now. I really can\'t wait for it, hopefully it\'s going to be as good as it sounds and looks.

The visuals look gorgeous and seemed to have improved since the last images released. It looks fantastic, definitely one of the best looking games I\'ve seen on Wii.

Plus with 16 player online, it could be great fun.

I personally can\'t wait for this now. Smilie

As long as you\'re not expecting an innovative, break-down-the-walls improvements on the genre from this game, I\'ll think you\'ll be happy. Like Laurelin said, it\'s a strong shooter, at least from the looks of it, and it\'s something the Wii could do very well with. Can\'t complain about a 3rd party game actually being more than shovelware.

That said, I do hope they give the Drudge a little personality to them. I can deal with the fact that it\'s another sci-fi shooter (with a semi-decent plot), but it does need a little flavor. I can\'t count the times I\'ve laughed at the grunts in Halo for their cowardice.

Oh, am I the only one who thinks the guns look \"gummy?\" Smilie

Looks quite solid, I am not expecting it to score over 9, but I think its great we are seeing a serious effort in terms of FPS on the Wii.

Looks amazing...I think this will be a hell of a game.

SmilieGotta say, it's looking VERY impressive for a Wii game, better than the earlier footage of the game. Also, the frame-rate looked pretty much rock solid which is nice to know. If they can make the gameplay and storyline as good as the visuals, I think they'll be on to a winner!

This is looking really good. I hope the gameplay lives up to expectations. I don't think the game will blow anyone away with innovation, but the effort in polish will do a lot to motivate third parties. The game doesn't need to be perfect as long as it's very good and it sells well. I don't usually shell out the cash for shooters, but if this turns out to be really good I just might. Smilie

I hope the online is solid. I'd love to be able to play with other people online on my Wii. I've tried on Smash Bros., but it's more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah this is looking pretty damn good now. Nice lighting for the Wii and the movement and animations seem very fluid. I still don't get why so many anti-FPS people are so excited about this though. Hypocrisy much?

Well I'm not an anti-FPS person, but I admit I haven't played very many first person shooters. My guess would be that they'd get excited over this for the same reason anyone else would. It's a third party game for Wii that looks great (The art isn't that inspired, but they've utilized the technology very well) and has the potential to have a good story and solid gameplay.

Even if I don't end up buying this game in particular, I'll be happy to know this developer is actually putting forth effort, and hopefully others will be forced to do the same. That can make any Wii owner happy (though I don't see why anyone would put down one type of game just because it isn't their taste).

Ah, mysteries of the world. Smilie
In my case, I haven't tried a good FPS with the Wiimote yet, and if anything will change my perception of the genre, it's that (or severely altered Gameplay, either will do Smilie).

So long as they get the gameplay and controls right, which it very much sounds like it, the graphics which look fine to me in the latest video and they'll probably improve, plus a robust and fun online element then I'll get this.

OK I'm sold!! Smilie I've had an eye on this game for a while and it looks pretty damn good, I'm really hoping it turns out to be good and its not another RedSteel which promised so much but turned out shit!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562
