During Nintendo's E3 conference, Animal Crossing: City Folk has been announced to be coming to Wii. From what we can tell it doesn't look much better than previous titles in the series on the visual front, but adds extra elements to the game. No longer are you restricted to your town, now able to traverse nearby cities, take part in activities within them and interact with friends much more with enhanced messaging features, including the ability to post to a special worldwide message board and the obligatory visiting of other towns. City Folk should be out by the end of the year - whether this applies to Europe remains to be seen.
In addition to this, a voice chat solution has been added. WiiSpeak is a standalone microphone that can be placed nearby and picks up your speech for better communication in game. Other players' voices appear to come from the TV, stopping those nasty predators getting to little Timmy without mummy knowing. At least in Animal Crossing, all players will be able to talk simultaneously. It's probably a bit like being on speaker phone, so if you don't like that...unlucky.
Stick with C3 for more details as we get them...
Update
Synopsis for the Press Release of Animal Crossing: City Folk below (new and interesting parts highlighted);
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Console: Wii
Launch Date: Holiday 2008
ESRB: RP (Rating Pending)
Game Type: Community Simulation
Accessories: WiiSpeak microphone (sold separately)
Players: 1-4 alternating, 2-4 simultaneous via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection
Developer: Nintendo
If life were an endless vacation, what would you do? Go fishing, collect shells or watch fireworks with friends? Build a snowman, exchange presents with family or decorate your house for the holidays? Take a trip to the city, go on a shopping spree or visit friends from all over the globe? In Animal Crossing: City Folk, life moves at a relaxed pace, but the world brims with endless possibilities.
• There's always something new to do. In the living, breathing world of Animal Crossing: City Folk, days and seasons pass in real time, so there's always something to discover. Catch fireflies in the summer, go trick-or-treating on Halloween or hunt for eggs on Bunny Day. If you're in the mood for something a little faster paced, take a bus to a new urban city area that's unique to Animal Crossing: City Folk. There you can catch a show at the theater or check out the sales at Gracie's boutique. But if you don't show your face back home for too long, your neighbors will miss you.
• Up to four people from your household can live and work together to build the perfect town. Design clothes and patterns, write letters and post messages on the bulletin board for each other, or invite up to three friends to visit your town using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. With the new WiiSpeak microphone, it's like you're all in the same room. The microphone sits atop the sensor bar and picks up the conversation of everyone in the room to encourage a more inclusive experience.
• Get to know your neighbors. The heart of Animal Crossing: City Folk is building relationships with the animals in your town as well as with other players. Befriend your animal neighbors by exchanging letters, gifts and favors. Animals can also move from town to town, bringing their memories and stories from their old towns with them. And since animals are notoriously loose-lipped, they spill all the juicy details.
• Express your personal style. Customize your town, your house and yourself by collecting bugs, fish, fossils, art, furniture, clothes and accessories. You can also go to the salon in the city to change your hairstyle and get a Mii makeover. Plus, if you design clothes in the tailor's shop, animals will wear them and maybe even bring them to other towns.
And this is what WiiSpeak looks like...

"Little Timmy" is a singer who died (I think it was a heart attack).... or was it "Little Jimmy" xD
The sound makes sure that predators don't attack dead singers without mum knowing.( Edited 15.07.2008 18:35 by edracon )

Well at least this game and others will feature voice chat now, so couldn't a third party just make a headset for those who want the option?
Virtua Tennis or Grand Slam Tennis? Reviewing both now for C3.

OMG I actually have to PAY for a shiity microphone which is basically guarenteed to pick up all backround noise.

This honestly looks almost no better than the DS game, and WiiSpeak sounds like a pile a' crap. You have to PAY for it too.
FFS, whole room voice chat is NOT cool. I hate voice chat enough as it is when you get family members telling you to do something. It'll just be a wholly embarassing experience on both sides of the "chat".

I think nintendo hav missed the point slightly... like Birdo said, it's voice chat that's designed to pick up all background noise. Great!
Also, if the technology in it is designed to pick up all the audio in the room, won't it be more expensive?
Hang on... the Wii has USB ports?

I don't have high expectations for the chat feature. There's no way it'll be able to pick up my voice clearly without me shouting. I already have to lean forward a bit when I want the Wii to detect the controller (we have a fairly large living room, and the tv and couch are on opposite ends of the room).
Won't there also be horrible looping? I'm guessing the idea was to pick up everyone in the room so they could all enjoy the conversation (how many times do you play Animal Crossing with people watching you? It's not exciting). Won't this also pick up the tv speakers? And thus the people talking to you will also hear their voices...probably more clearly than they'll hear yours.
All negative speculation...I'll be impressed if they somehow manage to make this work as good as a headset, but I'll withhold my final judgment until I read some reviews of it. I could always be wrong.

It seems like it could be done on the DS. Which I would like better because tying me down to a TV-set is not going to make me purchase Animal Crossing 1.1.
The Speak thing should be wireless.
So far the only thing that will make me buy this is if I can import my Wild World town over and have it as my Wii village. That would be enough of a hook to make me get it. Just. But without that, and without being able to ride my bike or have a proper garden, or do any of the hundreds of cool suggestions we've had in AC threads, I won't succumbing to this.

People will buy it just for the Mic then when they get home turn it on share a code or two on some forum then FINALLY interact with somone then will realise "why the fuck did I buy this?"
I just hope future and upcoming games add support for this thing (lots of support 90% of all wifi games better use it! wiiware wifi games games should be patched!) because while it's odd It won't be any diffrent than having a mic sitting at your desktop plus I usally have voices on xbl coming out of the TV speakers anyway.( Edited 15.07.2008 21:40 by Blade2t3 )

Okay after watching the gameplay footage on IGN, I have to say I really expected more. Besides the city and voice chat everything looks exactly the same as before. I was actually kind of excited about this game before, but now it seems really boring.

*sigh*
It looks identical.
If I have to play the same game again I just won't bother. I've already played it to death.

I really am disappointed here. Nintendo could have done so much more with this game. If they are going to give us N64 graphics then at least make them far more beautiful and detailed than the DS game. The only thing I noticed is the heads are round now. There looks like nothing new to do except this City thingy, which looks uninteresting atm.
And then there is voice chat. You know Nintendo, if something isn't broke, there is no need to fix it. If you are playing online with people, chances are you don't want other people to listen, or join in with your conversations. Do something for your hardcore fanbase for once, there aren't any little HSM loving girls or old grannies playing on Wi-Fi anyways.

Honestly someone explain how this is going to work. It's far away from you and on top of the TV. I would think that since you're far away it's sensitive to sound right? So the background noise on this is going to be a bitch. I mean it's right above the speakers as well...
And dude...I don't want my house to hear my conversations. Dear god I hope some third party mods that stuff up and release a headset of some sort.( Edited 16.07.2008 05:06 by tiamat1990 )

Rubbish. The microphone idea looks and sounds terrible. I don't see it being properly supported, like 90% of Nintendo's periperhals for GC and Wii.
AC looks decent but still a lot of the same. Why couldn't they take a risk and beef it up?

I agree with everyone, this looks more like an update, with added voice chat. I think the city mode shows a lot of promise though, if they expand on it.

Hopefully a 3rd party wii supporter like Nyko, who have done a great job of making peripherals better then nintendos (i.e their pistol shell thing being better then the zapper) will make a headset for games the support wiiSpeak.

According to IGN you can port your character from AC:WW to your Wii and it looks like you can bring all your progress with it.
This one UK gaming site interviewed Nintendo. Apparently a Carnival rolls in from time to time. Unfortunately NES games are out because Nintendo wants to keep VC games seperate
I hope that instead they take Ninendo classics and give them Animal Crossing twists. For example: Super Mario Bros. becomes... Super (insert animal's name) Bros. or maybe Punchout! with Dr. Shrunk!!
