E308 | Miyamoto: Zelda Wii Seeks Changes

With Nintendo’s E3 conference done and dusted, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Zelda for Wii is indeed on the way.

Discussing with IGN this week, the creator of the Legend of Zelda series virtually confirmed that the Zelda team has assembled and are deep at work crafting a new entry in the series for the Wii with a dedicated bunch of members “hard at work and working away”. The group, who previously worked with Phantom Hourglass for DS, have been working closely with the Wii team, with some “switching of people in and out” to bring different ideas and talent to the table.

One of the major hype factors for seeing the swordsman on the Wii was the need for change, and how Nintendo would revolutionise the art of adventure games. Ocarina of Time established a formula for third-person exploring, battle and inventory system that still remains a staple in the industry today. With Twilight Princess marking the last game to use similar concepts a fair few players had expressed that it had been almost too close to the original idea.

For the forthcoming Zelda outing series producer Eiji Aonuma had suggested a revamp: new ideas taking into account the Wii’s control scheme and accessibility. That said, Miyamoto feels that it may not veer too far from what we’re used to, but "Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas and so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas."

With 1:1 motion mapping being introduced on the system, do you feel it’ll have major role in Link’s latest adventure?

Yeah I just saw this, at least there is hope. Glad to hear about this, each 3D zelda offers a different experience, but its nice to see a fundamental change in the formula to keep things fresh.

It's possible. Methinks the 1:1 mapping will be an option in games that use it, to stop people being locked out from a game and therefore sales. Considering 1:1 takes care of the obvious normal perils of gesture recognition and animation by making them less to no important (animation being only important only for making sure limbs are fixed and move properly, I wouldn't have thought that would that difficult would it?).

I wouldn't mind if they kept the control setup, inventory scheme etc - but the main thing I felt was lacking recently was setting, story and game structure.

It's the same, and although it's not boring while you're playing, it can become predictable and repetitive - especially with Twilight.

Current setup:
- Set out and retrieve 3 gems/stones/something.
- Confrontation, twist
- Need to get 5-7 more gems/stones/something.
- Final dungeon, big bad boss (aka Ganon. aka hit fireballs back to Ganon).

It's fun, but been done to death now. Make Link absorbed into a portal, new world. Or a messenger coming from a new, totally unexplored region seeking help. Do something! I'd like more storyline, twists and sub-mini dungeons that tie into the game well. For example, in TP there could have been more combat sections relevant to the story, sub-quests etc.

and please, non of this predictable fire, forest and water!

I fukken hope so! Maybe we'll see it later this year. I'm personally glad we didn't see anything at E3.

There will be a lot more 1st person games taking advantage of this. I will be happy to see 1:1 for the next zelda, the combat for zelda is getting a little too easy. The AI is going to be the problem for this, however zelda has scripted AI for the proper fights like bosses and such, so it won't be that affected by it.

Oh and JB, I thought TP had a very well nice executed story, it was going perfect till just after Zant when Ganon was tacked on and they forgot answer like half the things they were leading up to (like that really cool surreal cutscene with dark link). I do agree that the structure is getting really repetitive and needs be done with, Fire, Forest Fire and gems is getting ridiculously predictable. Also zelda games should go back to what WW and MM did in terms of having lots of content between dungeons, and not merely dungeon marathon like TP and Oot.

I agree iCame, it did start off with a lot of potential. But after the usual 1/2 way point it went downhill (imo the same thing with WW - after the last two bloody-awesome dungeons it dipped).

I'd love dungeons to be beefed up, but padded out a lot. So the next one would take hours to find, but not just a case of looking and solving tedious puzzles, but doing sub-missions, being introduced new skills outside of dungeons and building up character development through proper, more dynamic interaction. Being accompanied by NPCs or even being able to switch to them would be a bonus!

They need dungeons to feel less like dungeons, do away with temples please. Give them a more organic feel, try not always give us a map, or give us it in less direct way like it was done in PH.

Also they should have more NPC involvement, that is when zelda is most enjoyable. Like the Earth and Wind Temples in WW and protecting Ilia on her way to kakariko or saving that little kid from the moblin king.

iCAME, you've basically just summarized some of my favourite things about Okami.

I don't know when a Dungeon/Temple starts, and as soon as you realise it, there's a twist, or it's over. Overworld and dungeon really mix, infact I don't really think there are dungeons in Okami, at least they can be hard to pinpoint.

So it's Nintendo's turn to take pointers from Okami, as Okami did from Zelda.

I would love to see what they can do with this! Now they can use the Wii engine for gfx, AI, etc instead of the GC engine.
For this game, I wanna see what new setting they can have for the Zelda Franchise, like a different point in time of the legend.

Maybe a continuation of the Majora's mask story, like what happens after he leaves Termina, cause all we know is that he disappeared and didn't come back to Hyrule when they needed him.

Ahhh, also leave Gannon out of this, make a new boss just like they did with Majora's Mask! Imagine how mad it would be turning into a Zora, Goron, Deku or Fierce Deity with the new engine and 1:1 mapping would be crazy!
Also taking advantage of wiiConnect24 as in like getting additional material through the net and all, since we're getting a storage solution soon, this can work! Or even use the Wii's clock as some sort of implementation of time or the weather channel could incorporate the weather in the game, it could be like a choice the gamer makes like if you would want to use these settings or not.

PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!Smilie

Like Metroid Prime basically? Because I've been wanting Nintendo to do that for absolutely ages. Why those chose to totally bugger it up in MP3, Hunters and to an extent MP2 I have no idea.

I'd like to see a futuristic setting for a Zelda game. Since each version of the game has a different generation of the Princess and the Hero, this would work in regards to the story. Not necessarily a dark, dreary sci-fi world, but a Hyrule where Kakariko was a thriving city as opposed to a village. Other changes could be worked into the Hyrule geography in this vein (or chunk the geography and totally redesign Hyrule, it wouldn't bother me).

However, unlike when Gamesradar posted an idea similar to this, I wouldn't want Epona to be a hover bike...

1:1 motion mapping isn't going to change Zelda all that much to be honest. I mean sure you swing your sword and Link replicates it but what does that mean really?

you know what would be different and pretty fucking awesome? zelda wii, with multiplayer...like swordfighting in the wii sports resort but some kinda fighting theme, not so simple. Really hard to include that and still include an awesome game, but as long as its different im happy.

They definitely need to mix it up a bit. The additions in of aiming and some fun motions in TP didn't change the fact that it had mostly identical gameplay to WW and Ocarina. 1:1 sword motion would be awesome, I'm already looking forward to that Wii Sports sword fighting game.

Pikmin 3 will likely be shown at Tokyo but I doubt Zelda will even in trailer form. I hope they take their time with the developing and take advantage of both Wii Speak and Wii MotionPlus.

Cool!

Great news then. They'll likely do a motion plus controll sceme. Lets hope they inject something new into it though. I've got to agree with jb's first post here. The formula is always the same. Maybe they should be a time traveler that comes from the future, although that is really cliche now.
