E308 Media | First Screens of Chrono Trigger DS Remake

By Adam Riley 19.07.2008 7

Update - The first screens have been added to the media folder below.

Original Story - With Square Enix showing off its Nintendo DS upgraded port of the SNES classic RPG 'Chrono Trigger' at this year's E3 event, more details of how it plays have now been revealed, including a nice treat for old school fans. Below are the controls discovered from various hands-on previews:

Select - Not used
Start - Display 'Pause' menu
L/R - Change menu pages and categories, escape from battle (holding R+L)
X - Open menu
A - Talk, examine, confirm
Y - Change message window position
B - Dash (use with control pad), cancel
Touch screen - Touch the screen to move the character, select menu items
D-pad - Move the character/cursor

So, as can be seen from the above, there are two options for playing through Chrono Trigger DS, using either the touch-screen or regular button set-up.

On top of this, though, for those wanting a true retro experience a Square Enix representative has confirmed that gamers can play the exact original edition of the game on just one screen of the DS!

As of yet there has still been no word from Square Enix Europe as to when the game will hit these shores for the first time ever...

Why would you want to play with just one screen when it makes it simpler to add a stats screen...

It's good that there's the option there at least, for those purists out there that want to be able to play the original in its exact original form without having to pay nearly 100 on eBay and get their old SNES out.

Wouldn't mind seeing some screens of the Dual Screens.

It would also conserve battery energy also I suppose with it being turned off.

Personally I dont like seeing the action bar below the person, I'm hoping I can get that back on the bottom screen.

"Study this revelation, you nest of adders!"

It is great that they are giving us a choice.

Looks snazzy. Can't wait, will definitely pick this up!
