E308 | Wii and DS Refinement in 5-10 Years

During E3 Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto discussed something that has been lingering on gamer’s minds: When would we be seeing Wii 2?

Some readers had speculated prior to E3 that a new handheld would be announced or at least hinted at this year, but according to the legendary gamer designer in one of his bazillion interviews a new Nintendo branded machine maybe as far off as around five to ten years before hitting the shelves.

He feels that both the DS and Wii have created an "advancement" in gaming, an evolution perhaps. The next step may be taking what the machines have done and refining them, blending new with the established.

In looking at video games, and obviously, it’s been a short history, I’ve seen patterns where you have more refinements as you go from one system to the next, followed by big evolutions, or big changes. And example would be going from the NES to the Super NES was more of a refinement, and going from the Super NES to the Nintendo 64 was more of a big advancement.

So, looking at the recent history, I’d say that the DS and Wii together represent some of those very big changes, both on the handheld and the home console side. Based on past history, I would guess that we would see some refinement sometime in the next five to 10 years and then in another five to 10 years, you would see probably the next big evolution.

Could an HD-enabled Wii follow-up be on the way at the turn of the decade? What refinements do you feel Nintendo would/should implement in their future consoles?

There's no rule anymore, they just wheel the next one out as soon as sales stop.

Nintendo will have a dodgy transition in the next cycle. I agree with him in the above statement but how do you convince the casual side to follow just by promising shinier graphics and tighter more realised motion control. That works with the hardcore. Plus nintendo have not bothered to attract many of the obsessive purists that buy into the PS3 and Xbox brands. TO keep the casual players they cant advance their technology past what is the norm or the cost of the systems will initially be too expensve so in terms of power i foresee them beig a cycle behind every generation. This really offends the purists and some devs especially the ones behind gears of war.
Also you hve two nintendo fanboys the ones that mostly buy nintendo mde products and those who like a broad range of games from other devs but the key ones like RE and FF are not seeing their titles appear in the same way as they are on the other consoles which i find annoying this will continue

As far as I see it, Nintendo are trying to put an end to the very idea of a console cycle. That makes total sense since, as we've seen from the current shift in 'generations', the change in cycle is a risky business period.

I'd imagine we'll see Nintendo slowly upping specs and revising models over the years as Apple have done with the iPod (and, when you think about it, as Sony and Microsoft have been doing with the different versions of the PS3 and 360).

The trick is for the companies to ensure that strict control is maintained on required specs for running games. If not, we'll just be left with the mess of the PC market where developers' addiction to pushing the spec limits has left the majority of PC owners unable to play most new games.

I can see where you're coming from and it seems that a balance is really needed - keep the core happy, but also bring in new players.

I think if Nintendo tie in new and interesting casual features with decent visuals, and perhaps release a Blu-Ray compatible model when the time is right (i.e. when HD really becomes the norm over standard DVDs), they can do a PS2 and lap up sales via a need for a cheap multimedia player and family friendly unit.

I still think they can boost the machine's capability without harming the casual market. Casual gamers are, I feel, always going to be developed...casually and not take full advantage of the hardware anyway.

Exactly: as long as they looks nice and play well. Sorry, but Wii Music, Animal Crossing and Wii Sports Resort cannot be put in that list.

This is kind of disappointing but it also works. The problem is, this could also mean that Nintendo doesn't enter "8th gen" at all, and instead misses out and runs to 9th gen.

On the other hand, it may be wise for all consoles to try this. Clearly the PS3's popularity is growing, and console graphics aren't behind/too behind PC graphics yet. Basically there is no rush, and wish consoleslike these it may be a better idea for all "sides" of the competition to let it grow. That way more people will buy their consoles and ultimately more games will be sold over the years as the fanbase grows.

The worst time of a console's life is when other systems are announced and people stop making/buying good games for them. What if this doesn't have to happen this time around?

A 15 year cycle!! Yeah right...no he's just talking out of his ass. As soon as Sony announces a new console you can be sure that an announcement from Nintendo will follow not too soon after.

How about Nintendo offer a trade-in for their next console in that you turn in your Wii, controllers and what not, get your VC, Wiiware, saves and profile transfered to the new system and get a discount on the price of the new console? I'm talking about Nintendo itself taking care of this, not taking your console to ebgames and getting store credit.

Then again, most "casuals" are used to changing cellphones every 2-3 years and buying a new ipod in the same time table...

This upsets me. If they do plan to do this then they should at least dramatically reduce the price of the console, even now its far too expensive.

Honestly, graphics are not going to get much better than the PS3/360. If anything, the consoles of the generations to come will probably just increase the size of the harddrives and how big a disk can be put in the system.

I have a lot of hope for Nintendo's next console, but I think we will see it sooner than Miyamoto said.

My guess is this...

The system will return to graphical equivalence with it's compeditors, while getting totally near-perfect motion control. By this time, the HD technology will not be as expensive, so the price will be decent. To keep their casual crowd, I am betting Nintendo will do a little deal that will allow people to turn in their Wii and controllers/Accessories for about 60% of the cost of the console. They will probably also give you the equivalent of each accessory you turn in for the Wii for this new console.

They will also probably transfer every VC title you have to this new console for you. WiiWare will probably get the same treatment.

I expect seeing an announcement for this around 2010. Release will probably be in late 2011 or early 2012.

bollocks, Nintendo used up all the oil by making stupid accessories and have used all the worlds resources. They need to find an alternative source before they can make a new console.

Those are the real reasons!

I think the next Wii should have much more power like the other two systems do. They are way over due on this!

Also, both the next Wii and DS should have some sort of hardrives. Much needed!

Exactly. Do people really think that Nintendo will let them trade their old wii's in for a new version of the wii. IF Nintendo did release a new version of the wii Nintendo would be then splitting their market in half (the ones who didn't upgrade and the ones who did, the 'geeks') it would then have to release games for both versions of the wii which would be very silly for Nintendo.
