Sonic and the Black Knight - First Scans, Details

Posted by By (jb) 97 Number of reads 45709

Update 3: New information on Sonic and the Black Knight has been taken from the issue of Nintendo Power, confirming that it is indeed a spiritual sequel to The Secret Rings, with the same Developer.

-Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings

-"This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight."

-Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings

-"As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts."

-More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump.

-"During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick"

-"Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down"

-Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick.

-"Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur."

-"his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor"

-If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you'll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.

-"At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.

-You can purchase items from residents. "Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit."

-About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones.

-You have the option to go online and trade items with friends.

-Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors.

-Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue give Sonic a speed boost.

-Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side.

-"On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor."

-"Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic's early Genesis days."

-"the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action"

-SBK Bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they're trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game's tempo this time around.

-The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous.

-"And there will be no dinosaur eggs!"

-"Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK."

-Other characters beside Sonic are playable, but it is entirely optional to play as them.

-Knuckles, who can hold two swords at once, and Shadow have been confirmed so far.

-A new special guage will "bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession."

-The team knows of the faults of the recent series and are hoping to fix it with this game.

Update 2: Sega have confirmed the upcoming Wii-exclusive game starring the blue wonder: Sonic and the Black Knight.

An official listing on the Sega website reveals the game's existence and also confirms an unveiling in the forthcoming edition of Nintendo Power.

Sonic returns to the Wii™ on a wild ride through a storybook world of Arthurian legend in his all-new adventure, Sonic and the Black Knight™. Designed exclusively for the Wii, Sonic and the Black Knight brings a new twist to Sonic gameplay by combining Sonic's legendary speed with frenetic swordplay action that makes full use of the unique Wii control system.

In this strange, enchanted medieval world, Sonic wields a sword in his effort to save the day. Encountering many friends and foes along the way, Sonic shows them what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. Master the sword and unravel the mystery behind this intriguing adventure…

Check out the September issue of Nintendo Power for the full scoop on Sonic and the Black Knight!

Thanks to Jump_Button for the tip.

Update 1:Some more unconfirmed details have arisen from NeoGAF:

  • First person gameplay
  • With west rpg elements
  • No MotionPlus compatible
  • Coming 2009, Wii exclusive
Also, some are saying that Nintendo could be publishing this, if a new OFLC rating is anything to go by. However, Cubed³ believes this could merely be the Virtual Console release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on Master System in Australia.

The scan is starting to look more and more real, especially given how apparently SEGA has already registered a Sonic and the Black Knight website.

Original story: An interesting image from an upcoming Nintendo power magazine reveals a new Sonic game: Sonic and the Black Knight.

Still unconfirmed, but more than likely legit, is a promotional image (via NeoGAF) of the world's most famous hedgehog armed with a Power Rangers-inspired sword and dueling glove.

Known as Sonic and the Black Knight, the game is apparently a Wii exclusive, but little else is known aside from the unconfirmed cover above. Readers seem to be in two camps, one speculating a sequel to the 2007 hit, Sonic and the Secret Rings, or a completely new genre for the blue one to wander into.

Be sure to stick around for confirmation once the magazine eventually makes its way onto the Internet.

Most likely the spoiler u described. Its exactly what i thought as well.

Probably uses that Motionplus thingy

Cubed3 Member

Well I can't say I expected this. I'm not sure what to think of it yet. Let's hope it's not another lame idea that tries to reinvent Sonic but fails to entertain.

Cubed3 Member

I really hate sonic, I really want to see less of him.

Staff Member

I reckon something like this could work really well, if the sword is used for Melee strikes alongside traditional Sonic speed.

Provided it isn't a fighter of course, which I sincerely hope it isn't.

Looking forward to seeing some scans. Smilie

*big sigh*

I'm dissapointed in this... Didn't they say "Be excited for the game" ? Well, I can't believe im saying this, but SEGA should either stop making Sonic games, or stop making games.

Looks cool...

Almost definitely.

Cool promo image...but I really need to hear more about the game before I pass any judgement.

Cubed3 Member

The fact that sonic is part of this game can only make it worse

Yeah and the mound that the sword was in was blue was it not? This all makes sense.

Readers seem to be in two camps, one speculating a sequel to the 2007 hit, Sonic and the Secret Rings...

I was thinking this too... Gosh, I really hope for the sake of Sonic 3-D games that this is not a continuing trend. "The Secret Rings" was not a bad game to me, but I'd hate a series of games that sends Sonic to different periods of time... What's next:

"Sonic and The Roman Empire"

or

"Sonic and The Wild, Wild West?"

I mean just... No. No thank you.

Cubed3 Member

God, he looks so..... silly... in that cool way o.O

When this game turns out to be a great sequel to Secret Rings, I will sit and laugh, I will also post a post detailing the intensity of my laughing. I will also say "stfuuuuuuuuuuuu" to people who hate Sonic for no reason.

But I won't do that now. The best time to strike is when the opposition feels silly and vunerable for how wrong they were.

Sonic. and Swords. Sonic. and Swords. -.-;;;

Sonic & guns?

Come on, the Sonic series is worse than the internet, we're already immune to shock since Shadow The Hedgehog.

If this turns out to be a really cool MotionPlus-powered speedy, action game, I will be joining Superlink on his high-horse.

People should stop thinking they have everything sussed out going on a picture and a name. Where do you think you are? Kombo?

Cubed3 Member

Please let it be a sequel to Secret Rings.

And even if it is, the \'sword play\' could potentially ruin it.Smilie

It won't use Motionplus, this I highly doubt. The game will be speedy, of this I have no doubt. The 2 just won't go together.

IF there is in-game/stage sword play, it will probably be to use homing attacks or special spin attacks, and will probably use Wiimote gestures, and that is all.

So far it hasn't said anyway that there WILL be swordplay.

Hopefully Dimps will be developing it. Can't see anything wrong if that happened.

I wander whats Time Hollow

\"The game will be speedy, of this I have no doubt. The 2 just won\'t go together.\"

Dont see why they cant go together. Especialy if the segment is onrails for sonics forward motion.

Not that I think there is swordfighting anyway.
Merely that 1:1 can work both fast and slow paced, depending how its done.

Sonic with a sword is only marginaly better then Sonic with a gun, mind.

Nah, Sonic is a fantasy, and in the comics that everyones loves so much (mainly because it\'s still called Mobius/Robotnik in the comics) they\'ve used swords multiple times.

That\'s the difference between Sonic with a Sword and Sonic with a Gun. Also it never said anywhere he would actually wield the sword in game.

Also I don\'t see how 1:1 motion could be used well in a speedy game, or even what point it would serve. Sonic will never go FP either.

EDIT: Hopefully the team behind Secret Rings will make it.
