Update 3: New information on Sonic and the Black Knight has been taken from the issue of Nintendo Power, confirming that it is indeed a spiritual sequel to The Secret Rings, with the same Developer.

-Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings

-"This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight."

-Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings

-"As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts."

-More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump.

-"During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick"

-"Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down"

-Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick.

-"Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur."

-"his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor"

-If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you'll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.

-"At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.

-You can purchase items from residents. "Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit."

-About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones.

-You have the option to go online and trade items with friends.

-Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors.

-Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue give Sonic a speed boost.

-Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side.

-"On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor."

-"Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic's early Genesis days."

-"the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action"

-SBK Bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they're trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game's tempo this time around.

-The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous.

-"And there will be no dinosaur eggs!"

-"Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK."

-Other characters beside Sonic are playable, but it is entirely optional to play as them.

-Knuckles, who can hold two swords at once, and Shadow have been confirmed so far.

-A new special guage will "bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession."

-The team knows of the faults of the recent series and are hoping to fix it with this game.

Update 2: Sega have confirmed the upcoming Wii-exclusive game starring the blue wonder: Sonic and the Black Knight.

An official listing on the Sega website reveals the game's existence and also confirms an unveiling in the forthcoming edition of Nintendo Power.

Sonic returns to the Wii™ on a wild ride through a storybook world of Arthurian legend in his all-new adventure, Sonic and the Black Knight™. Designed exclusively for the Wii, Sonic and the Black Knight brings a new twist to Sonic gameplay by combining Sonic's legendary speed with frenetic swordplay action that makes full use of the unique Wii control system.

In this strange, enchanted medieval world, Sonic wields a sword in his effort to save the day. Encountering many friends and foes along the way, Sonic shows them what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. Master the sword and unravel the mystery behind this intriguing adventure…

Check out the September issue of Nintendo Power for the full scoop on Sonic and the Black Knight!

Thanks to Jump_Button for the tip.

Update 1:Some more unconfirmed details have arisen from NeoGAF:

    • First person gameplay
    • With west rpg elements
    • No MotionPlus compatible
    • Coming 2009, Wii exclusive

Also, some are saying that Nintendo could be publishing this, if a new OFLC rating is anything to go by. However, Cubed³ believes this could merely be the Virtual Console release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on Master System in Australia.

The scan is starting to look more and more real, especially given how apparently SEGA has already registered a Sonic and the Black Knight website.

Original story: An interesting image from an upcoming Nintendo power magazine reveals a new Sonic game: Sonic and the Black Knight.

Still unconfirmed, but more than likely legit, is a promotional image (via NeoGAF) of the world's most famous hedgehog armed with a Power Rangers-inspired sword and dueling glove.

Known as Sonic and the Black Knight, the game is apparently a Wii exclusive, but little else is known aside from the unconfirmed cover above. Readers seem to be in two camps, one speculating a sequel to the 2007 hit, Sonic and the Secret Rings, or a completely new genre for the blue one to wander into.

Be sure to stick around for confirmation once the magazine eventually makes its way onto the Internet.

Yeah optional characters is GREAT IMO. That is the way Sonic always should be. i.e. Sonic 3 - Sonic Advance.

I\'m hoping Tails and Amy will be playable. I\'d hate it if they made Shadow more of a main character than Amy.

Also, wouldn\'t it be awesome if Metal Sonic was a super secret character like in Sonic Adventure? Smilie

On the upside the screens/scans show the graphics are better than unleashed for the wii XD.

And this could be quite good, especially since they've changed the control system it would seem.

Tails could get swords on his tails ;] lol.

I am really excited about this game now!

Swords>Guns, Sonic>Shadow (IMO). Also the option to play as different characters is much needed and the implication for specific characteristics is the icing on the cake.

Also Jun Senoue! What a legend on guitar and bass!

    Fingers crossed! Smilie

Sonic defo > Shadow. IMO Sonic is the best character in the series, and he needs more of a chance to show that HE\'S the real hero and that all these other characters who overshadow him are still amateurs Smilie

And yeah, I\'m wondering how Tails would play (assuming he\'s playable). He may use a dagger, or he may use his Tails to attack instead. That would make sense.

I'm going to be a naysayer and say that tha playable characters will be:

    - Knuckles
    - Shadow
    - Silver

All the characters I hate ;( I'd like to see Blaze/Tails/Rouge/Metal Sonic or maybe even Espio though.

I do think there will only be 3 other characters though. We already know 2 so the last is probably Silver or Tails. I hope it's not Silver, I hate that fuck. Smilie

If Secret Rings is to be used as an example, then I\'d expect some key figures of the King Arthur story to be Sonic-Universe characters again. Should get some of the annoying buggers out of the way at least.Smilie

In opion the playable characters should be sonic, tails and knuckles, how it should be.
Knuckles is awesome, and i hate shadow for taking his place as the anti-hero.
Why can\'t shadow and that silver guy just f off.

    Hmmm.

I second you on getting tail to run again, like he did in adventure. Pure sexi'ness ><

But kind'a ruined it in adventure 2 ¬.¬

My list of people to play as... Will be more liek this.

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Metalix/Metal Sonic And a possibility of including shadow even though we already know thats true.

I dont see how speed disables 1:1 working as a gameplay mechcanic.

Those are 2 completely different levels of speed. Smilie Sonic games are always about speed, I think having to concentrare on where your sword is would only interfere with that, especially if he uses the sword to perform certain actions to get through the stage (For example one screenshot shows Sonic using the sword to slide down a wall to break his fall).

Plus from the new info it's obvious there will be no 1:1.

I know theres no 1:1, I'm just theoerising about how it could be.

Speed dosnt nesscerly mean you are "in controll"
A lot of fast-moving over the top sonic action is, and has always been, more or less on rails.

What I was thinking is you could have specific sections where sonic builds up enough speed, and it switchs to close-up third person behind sonic.
Sonic constantly goes forward, but you can controll the "slashs". (and maybe still jump)

This could work as say, part of a boss.
You have to build up enough speed to get near them, then you slash a pary a bit at speed and hopefully do damage before he knocks you back.
You could also use the "sword stab" techique to pull of sharp turns with no lose of speed. If you get the timeing right and stick your sword in a pillar, sonic could swing around it.

(actualy, thinking about it, maybe a 1:1 controlled whip would work well at speed for direction changes and landscape triggers...allthough it would probably be far too unpredictable for the engine to handel :p)

These are just some random ideas.

    Oh, sweet, this looks cool.
Another original Wii exclusive? Oh god yes please, we need more of those.
I think this could be really interesting... I think the idea of Sonic with a sword will open up a lot of new possibilities for this game. And it will only help amplify the canned "cool" Sega love with this franchise. Using it to slow his descent down a stone wall by jamming it into the brickwork and sliding down? I don't even know why I posed that as a question, that's just irritatingly awesome.

He'll be controlled by the control stick...? Does this mean to imply he'll be doing some non-linear action here? I mean, the screens suggest otherwise, but nothing's been said. It's the spiritual sequel to Secret Rings mainly in story structure, I feel. If this turns out to be a freely moving 3D Sonic game for the Wii, I may just 'splode.
    In a good way.
