Dragon Quest V on Nintendo DS Blitzes Japan's Chart

By Adam Riley 25.07.2008 6

Dragon Quest V on DS has not only obliterated the Japanese sales chart, but far exceeded many people's estimations to claim its No.1 spot for the week. Having pass through about 644,000 units since its release last Thursday, the game has now officially started stronger than Dragon Quest IV (597,301) and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker on DS (593,994). Going from Famitsu figures, the PS2 edition of DQV sold 1.05 million in its first week, quickly tapping out at 1.61 million. Whilst the DS version has clearly started slower, apparently Square Enix has plenty of stock to replenish supplies very quickly this time round.

Tomorrow will see the official Media Create hardware sales released, but despite the impressive start for Dragon Quest V, the DS sales bump is thought to have not been enough to claim No.1 as a metallic blue PSP and TV Tuner bundle hit on the same day as DQV.

They've actually played a sly little game with these DQ remakes. They're clearly building up to IX, and these games are just whetting the appetite, putting Dragon Quest back into people's minds. DQIX was always going to sell well, but I think Square Enix have raised its chances of success through releasing IV, V and VI.

It's interesting how the DS userbase is already so full of RPG lovers, though, that this new release hardly pushed any new units compared to the week prior. We'll see the full result tomorrow, but Famitsu's numbers show barely any major bump at all.

Long gone are the days of the DS selling over 100,000 a week without any trouble!

Well, when you've sold to nearly 1 in 5 of the population, you're going to find new sales rather hard to come by.

Good to see that Tales of Symphonia Wii is already around the 200,000 mark and looks like it will sell more than the two DS entries into the series at least.

EDIT: Updated with No.31-50 and the MC hardware numbers.
