Nintendo Q1 Profits Rise 34% Due to Wii

By Jorge Ba-oh 30.07.2008 7

Nintendo have reported a first-quarter profit rise of 34% due to their motion-controlled box of tricks comfortably nicking the crown from rivals Microsoft and Sony.

The Wii has stolen the market by a fair lead, thanks to a range of different games that span a multitude of audiences and tastes. Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros Brawl have contributed to an ever-increasing number of consoles flying off the shelves.

  • Net income during the period soared to 107.3 billion yen
  • Revenue increased by 24% to 423.4 billion yen.
  • Operating profit rose 32% to 119.2 billion yen
  • Sales for Wii rose 51%, outselling the PlayStation 3 by 3:1.
  • 5.17 million Wii consoles were sold this quarter, compared with 3.43 million last year.
  • Nintendo is now valued at $76 billion, double Sony's market capitalization.
  • 6.94 million DS consoles sold during the quarter, outselling Sony's PSP by nearly 2:1.
  • Gaming software revenue rose 39.5% to 160.4 billion yen.
  • Nintendo has changed the game entirely. Hardware cycles come and go, but Nintendo is strengthening and fortifying its game franchises.

ps3 3:1 sounds good, but I think it's too early in the game for anything special to be concluded out of that.

I think in terms of longer lasting competition, the ps3 has a fair chance of seeing succes.

I am definitely thinking about picking one up for its blu-ray thing anyway. the fact that there are some nice games on it makes it a different, but real value.

Nevertheless, nice growth from a business perspective.

WOW No wonder Nintey love the casual gamers!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

    erv,

The PS3 has lost some key 3rd party exclusives, mainly Final Fantasy XII for the Western Market, and some games that were a lock for the previous playstation systems are no longer, Star Ocean 4 is being developed for the Xbox 360 and no Tales game has been developed for the PS3.

The PS3 can still be successful and probably will but it will not be as successful as it could have been if it had retained its exclusive games and support like the previous systems.

If you ask me, PS3 has had it now, just like PSP.

Sure it'll still be around, but you wont see a game much more 'sellable' that GTA4 (except maybe GTA5) and that has already come and gone. MGS4 doesnt stand a chance of having that sort of impact, neither does Gran Turismo 5 or Tekken 6.

    Nintendo has won this one.

The PSP is doing okay, especially in Japan where it\'s been on top for quite a while now.

Yea, i really doubt Sony can catch up. But i do think PS3 will beat XBOX 360, its sold like almost 15 mil. and XBOX has barely passed 20. Lets no forget XBOX has been in the market one year longer than PS3 and Wii.

Sonys problem is the software tie-over ratio for both the PS3 and PSP is terrible.
Even if they did sale more consoles, people arnt buying the games to actualy give them profit.

The whole bluray thing has backfired on them hugely.
    Even if it does fit the niche of;
"Those technical enough to want HD content, but not technical enough to stream it from their PC, use a HDD box, or download on a 360 "
In the, lets say, 10 years. It will take everyone (except the broadband poor US) to goto download distribution.

Sonys got time to capitalised on bluray, but it really isnt something they can base their companys future on.
It isnt going to be a new dvd, and it wont replace their profits from their playstation brand.

    Sony need to sale games.
    And more tvs.
    And phones.
    etc.
