Rumour: Jet Set Radio to Return on Wii?

By Shane Jury 31.07.2008 15

Following a recent trademark re-listing, a new rumour doing the rounds is that Sega are planning a revival of the classic Jet Set Radio series on Wii.

Obtained from Kotaku, it seems that Sega have filed the Trademark for the Jet Set Radio Franchise (named as Jet Grind Radio outside of Europe) here, as recently as last week, which is completely separate from the original trademark obtained in the Dreamcast era.

Given how many Dreamcast Franchises Sega have brought to Wii (Sega Bass Fishing, Samba de Amigo), and the tailor-made controls for spray-painting and stunts that the Wii Remote and Nunchuk could bring to the table, especially with MotionPlus and the Balance Board, could Wii see a remake or even a new installment of the series?

One of my favourite games on DC, I can only hope so. If it\'s new and the includes Balance Board and MotionPlus support it would be a good game.

The style of the game suits Wii.

Eurgh. Balance board support? You can't be serious.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yeah.. what are you talking about? You're mad. It'd be shit with the balance board.

Well maybe not BB support unless they added some new gameplay modes and abilities that are well suited. If it\'s simply a port then I agree, no.

The BB works pretty well with skateboard and snowboard games from all that I have heard so far. I think with good design they could use it in a roller-skate/blade game in some also, for those that have one. It all comes down to the skill of the developer. It does not have to be used as primary control as your probably imagining but if it was used as a platform to play the game with while having a Nunchuk and Wii Remote in hand also it could work very well. I know some games are doing that.

I think Wii Motion Plus would be great, I would say it\'s needed for me to buy it, I don\'t need this game twice over. If it was a new game they could use it to great effect. I would love new game something new, that feels new and looks new. Widescreen would be great.

Balance Board support as an extra feature or alternative control method - why not. The more ways to play (without overriding the default method) would be great.

Yeah, spread it thin!

Seriously, the JSR games aren't exactly known for their fluid controls as it is. They actually got worse with JSRF, and that was even without the horrible DC stick.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Balance board could work, but the game would have to be built from scratch to use it well.
I mean, to actualy have shiting your body weight effect the movement correctly.

Also, I'm not at all sure how MotionPlus would benefit this game. Would *exactly* would it controll?

Wouldnt the best use be to have the IR sensors letting you spray custom designs onto surfaces?

Last update; Mice,Plumbers,Animatronics and Airbenders. We also have the socials; Facebook & G+

The nightmare (and therefore most likely) scenario is that they port the original game, and simply replace the graffiti stick gestures (which were dropped completely in JSRF) with equivalent Wii gestures. They wouldn't even have to change any graphics that way.

Slap IR pointing on the custom graffiti utility and voila! Hell, you could even swap your 20kb GIFs via friendcodes, rather than the internet this time!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Is all I have to say on this matter.

To be honest, I\'m going to buy this, even though I don\'t have a Wii- in the vain hope that it might encourage them to re-release a certain other Dreamcast title...

(see signature).

Edit: Shit, no signatures in news posts. I was, of course, talking about SHAMOO FREE.

Kotaku are saying that those images are concept art for a proposed title to Kuju Studios, about 2 years ago. I find this bit interesting;

Kuju London, which specializes in Wii development, recently changed its name to Headstrong Games, announcing that it had an unannounced Sega title in the works. The studio's previous work includes the Battalion Wars series for Nintendo.

wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. I hope that this comes out on Wii, it has too. Smilie
