Nintendo's Rhythm Heaven DS and Fatal Frame Wii Start Strong

By Adam Riley 04.08.2008 12

The first day sales are now in from Japan, showing just how well the likes of Rhythm Tengoku Gold on DS and Fatal Frame IV on Wii have started. Check out the sales numbers below:

  • Phantasy Star Portable (PSP, SEGA) - 217,000 (90% of initial shipment)
  • Rhythm Tengoku Gold (NDS, Nintendo) - 150,000 (50% of shipment)
  • Soulcalibur IV (PS3, Bandai Namco) - 56,000
  • Soulcalibur IV (360, Bandai Namco) - 35,000 (80% of shipment)
  • Fatal Frame IV (Wii, Nintendo/Tecmo) - 21,000 (60% of shipment)
  • Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 (NDS, SNK) - 10,000
There are some major shocks this week, with SEGA's Phantasy Star Portable storming through 90% of its stock on just the first day, stunning everyone given how the series has been getting poor sales from recent releases. The DS sequel to Rhythm Tengoku on GBA has far out-performed the original version's first week performance in just one day, whilst Fatal Frame IV managed to sell more on its dťbut day than the very first game sold in total! As for SNK's witch-touching game, it appears to be tracking similar to the first game.

Which game?

( Edited 28.12.2012 13:45 by Guest )

I've been playing it and whilst fun, I think I slightly preferred the GBA edition...Something else I've been playing a lot if Nanashi no Game, Square Enix's DS horror title. Cracking stuff!

Phantasy Star Portable (PSP, SEGA) - 217,000 (90% of initial shipment)

Those numbers say PS3 version is doing better.... Smilie

And Smilie Nanashi no game!! I was considering getting that. I'll check some reviews first Smilie

Si, I'm not easily scared by J-Horror movies, but Nanashi no Game has had me jumping like crazy at times...

I'm amazed the 360 edition of SCIV is actually not that far off the PS3 version given the differences in userbase. Apparently there are 120,000 reservations for Tales of Vesperia on 360 as well.

Who wants to bet that considering Phantasy Star Portable has already hit a 90% sell-through rate and SEGA probably was not expecting such strong sales, Rhythm Heaven will actually overtake it to claim No.1 next week?

Our member of the week

Given that other blockbusters were released the same week, he did rather decently (fatal frame 4)

Didn't think you even really liked the GBA one!

I think perhaps playing the DS version made me realise how much I actually DID like the GBA game Smilie To be honest, there are some bloody fun games in the DS edition...seems MUCH harder, though.

Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2

The Japanese sure do love touching up little girls, on their DSs.

I wont be getting Fatal Frame 4 unless they sort the controls out for the west.

60% of Fatal Frame IV sold...not too bad I guess. I'm just wondering why the amount of units are so low? Isn't this supposed to be a big game? Or is it not popular franchise?

The first ever Fatal Frame sold about 21,000 units lifetime, whilst the next two sold somewhere around the 40,000 mark in total. So retailers didn't order many copies since it's such a niche series AND is on a format that hasn't shown much love for 'core' games in Japan...Therefore, it's looking like a big success so far for FFIV!

It definitely is. It doesn't sit as well as the GBA one with me. But that's for the review...
