Iwata Reveals Casual Gamers Buy More and More
Recent News
In a recent interview, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that casual gamers buy more games that one might think.
Contrary to the image that casual gamers hardly ever invest in new titles and would be content with their initial purchase, it seems that a growing number are buying games more frequently. Iwata notes that an increasing percentage of Brain Age gamers are shelling out more cash within 3 months.

WSJ: You once said you hoped that new game players who were drawn to the easy-to-play games would eventually start buying more traditional games like Mario. Is that happening?
Mr. Iwata: Of the people whose first videogame purchase was Brain Age, about 35% bought more games within 90 days. Of those, more than 10% have now bought 11 titles or more.

noneFor all I know, the number of people who actually bought Brain Age as their first game could be as low as a thousand. Bad interviewer.

noneI got it mixed up with big brain academy on Wii.
Even so, 35% buying more games; Brain Age 2, Vision Training, Meth Training etc. Need more specifics, especially since he doesn't directly answer the question in regards to traditional games being bought.( Edited 06.08.2008 12:51 by Bart.... )

The thing is you need so much information and study to really accurately say. Wish the interviewer followed up and asked about some specific breakdown at least.
At the numbers level though, 35% comes out at around just below 4 million. 4 million extra game sales (which is bare minimum figure as it doesn't take into account each individual buying more than one game, and sadly again without specific breakdowns), and the narrower 10% alone would mean 400,000 sales per each of those "11 titles or more" (as an average).
The numbers come across as a bit too big to put down entirely to typically defined "casual" games both in sales and in per person amount of games bought. While not directly relatable, SMG has actually had around 500,000 sales above Sunshine (that figure is a bit old now), TP sold just under 6 million (GC + Wii combined) while WW sold over 3 million, and Phantom Hourglass at over 4 million has outstripped past hand held games in the series (although I'm not entirely sure if to count oracles of ages and oracles of seasons together - they both put out at just under 4 million each).
Jesusraz/Adam could probably be a lot more comprehensive though, so I'm not entirely sure. When you consider the common trend is for sales to decrease though except in certain circumstances (combined sales of dual games like oracles of ages and oracle of seasons, combined with the fact they were on the GBC, the gameboy generally being one of the biggest selling platforms ever) then it certainly seems positive (I would've thought anyways).
Wish I had more knowledge of DS specifically though. At least on Wii, most trends, from Nintendo at least, seem encouraging. 3rd parties need to make better use of the opportunity though, I mean the initial math alone should get them scrabbling to be that first in depth experience.....
Christ, I really need something to do other than sales analysis.( Edited 06.08.2008 14:16 by Modplan Man )

They sure do, about 35% of people who smoked a joint as their first drug need training on their meth skills. Ten percent of those are addicts.

noneDosnt supprise me at all.
The whole casual/hardcore devide is a load of bulls.
Its far more complex then that, and more a question of accessible/inaccessible games.
Heck, the group we call "casual" are probably an easy nut to get to buy more diverse games then the group that just buy non-stop sports games.
"traditional games being bought."
You gota define that first.
Because Tetris is about as traditional as you can get.

noneWell, I'm not surprised. This is good news for Nintendo, but it was obvious 3rd parties have been capitalizing on the fact the "casual" audience is generally uninformed on quality Wii games (i.e. pretty much everything that isn't published or developed by Nintendo) by shoveling the hundreds of half-assed, low-budget crap onto Wii.
Although, I must say, it's looking like things are finally starting to turn around. We have some rather decent efforts in the pipe from 3rd parties.
Not quite where it should be, but it's a start.
On Nintendo's side of things, I understand they're working on a slew of games for us (the "hardcore" audience). I'm just anxious to find out what they are. lol There's a long storied history of franchises they could tap into and, frankly, I'm anxious to see where they'll take them with the capabilities Wii brings to the table.
StarFox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Excitebike, 1080, Waverace, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, etc., etc...
Darkflame brings up some good points on the whole casual-hardcore audience perception. I agree, it's much more complex than just lumping the audience into two groups.( Edited 06.08.2008 18:31 by MechaG2 )
