Rumour: Dual Touch Screen DS in 2009?

An interesting rumour has scoured the web recently with hints of a dual touch-screen DS on the way.

According to Kotaku, undisclosed sources outside Nintendo's secretive group have suggested that an new DS is due to unfold in 2009. The device would come packed with bigger, clearer screens and the ability to wield your stylus on both screens, allowing for touch play on either one of the two. Sources indicate that if reports are true, Nintendo will not be announcing anything till next year.

With the DS growing from strength to strength, would it be time for Nintendo to reveal a newer model, or should the Japanese giant be taking a short breather in the hardware area?

It would have to be DS2, and not just a redesign, if these rumors are true. Having games take advantage of the two touch screens would mean that those games would not work on older DS systems.

That's great and all but I just don't see what could come out of having two touch screens. I'd be more interested in a multi-touch screen. What I mean by that is, a touch screen that can sense more than one input. So like a touch screen that could detect two styluses instead of just one.

It's sad to say this, as I am not a graphic whore, but this new DS will need a major upgrade in the graphical department if it hopes to keep up with the inevitable PSP2.

Other then that, it would be cool, but not necessary if this new DS had a sliding top screen. It would make it way more attractive to the consumer.

-sigh-
They justy keep randomly doing guess's and rumours.
One day they might be right, but its just getting boring and a bit sad.

Nintendo probably dont even know what they are doing to do yet.

That and, theres little advantage in two touchscreens.
Even though they are very cheap to add.

I don't see why they would need a new DS. The DSL is still selling very well.

For the successor to the DS, I agree with tiamat1990. Multi-touch screens are the way to go, like the iPhone has. Maybe also include a motion sensor.

It would be great if true, I could see this taking DS games to the next level and bringing about further possibilities. I have always thought it would be great to be able to lie it down flat and have a friend play on one screen, while you on another. 2 on 2 even. This sort of upgrade would be easy to put into production so I think it could well be true.

I would like to see the screens closer aligned together on any new version. I would also like to see it much slimmer and for it to be able to use attachments without the GBA port. All it needs is a screw casing to do so. On-board SD memory is a must if Nintendo wish to lessen the effects of piracy and improve it's compatibility with Wii.

This is a load of BS. As long as Nintendo keep making DS games, DS2 is a LONG way off. DS is still amazingly popular and is showing no signs of needing a successor. I say Nintendo shouldn't even need to think about making their 8th gen handheld until Sony does.

May the League of Kings always reign supreme!

I like this idea. They could put Air Hockey on the DS! They would have to make a slot for a second stylus, though. Goodbye GBA slot!

Wow. That sounds awesome, but I have to agree that it most likely won't be implemented in a mere DS redesign, rather the DS' successor. And it might be some time before that happens considering how much the DS has been dominating the market.

If you guys recall, not too long ago Nintendo had patented a touch screen interface that recognized multiple simultaneous points of contact. I'm pretty sure they'll implement it in the successor to the DS as well, but that tech coupled with dual touch screens would be freak'n sweet! Touch screen functionality on both screens with simultaneous touch point recognition for each?! Hell yeah.SmilieSmilie

To be honest, what I'd rather see is ONE screen, bigger, but still touch, and multi-touch instead of single-touch.
From the beginning, the thing that bugged me the most is how much better the DS looked in my mind with just one screen. In LOADS of games the second screen isn't even needed anyways^^'.
I'd really like it if I had a handheld that was just the current DSL's bottom section.. I'm just weird, I know, but I'd still very much like it..

BTW..

Hi, guys^^ Don't know if anyone can recall who I am, but meh, I've got bigger fish to fry!
