Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, Reggie Fils-Aime, Wii, DS, Hard Drive Recent News
In a recent interview with a Spanish Nintendo Magazine, Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the Wii memory solution, and commented on the number of peripherals on the market.
In the interview with Club Nintendo, the Magazine, Reggie began by stating that a memory solution for the Wii's limited 512MB is definitely on the way, although it most likely will not be a Hard Drive.
Roughly translated;
Miyamoto-san added onto Reggie's comments that Nintendo are researching different methods of storage, and patient gamers should expect an announcement in the near future.
Miyamoto stated that a new Wii Zelda is indeed in development, but will not be shown until it is ready. He didn't comment on whether the new Wii title will utilize Wii MotionPlus or not, or whether there would be another Zelda game for the Nintendo DS.
When asked about his thoughts on the number of peripherals that Wii supports, Miyamoto said that since there are a large enough number of them already, we shouldn't expect many more.
Reggie Fils-Aime echoed his previous statements this past E3 by saying that Nintendo Franchise fans shouldn't have felt left out of this year's E3 press conference and reminded everyone that there's a GTA for the DS and that Animal Crossing is a hardcore game.
The two High-profile Nintendo employees ended the interview by stating that there would be no Wii demos on the Nintendo Channel, no DS redesign until the sales of the Lite slow down, and, as opposed to being annoyed, Reggie is flattered more than anything in regards to Microsoft's recent announcements over Xbox Live Avatars.
Could one of Nintendo's alternative solutions for the Wii's memory problems be Holographic Storage, an idea they've touted for a number of months now?

Roughly translated;
We are working on a storage solution and it is especially important in America because our consumers are using Wii Points for the Virtual Console and WiiWare. I want the people to have the right expectations; We have never said that it will be a hard drive nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store the games.

Nintendo. Fod god's sake, there's no need to "innovate" with every bloody thing. Just update the Wii for hard-drive support and bump up security if you're worried about hacking and the like!
At least they're thinking of something, but come on, the easiest and probably most cost-effective way would be to allow for hard-drive support via USB.

Aaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaaaaaa.
Reggie doesn't know games.
Argh ffs!
We won't be seeing a solution for about a year, they'll announce it and make a big fuss next year, and fans will go "It should have been with the system to start with!"
Seriously what's up with them at the moment?! I don't understand the way they work.

D_prOdigyI remember it was only the self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamer that actually cared about the first Animal Crossing being released in Europe. Funny how conceptions change...

Now that I think about it, that's completely true...
But that one is my favourite one anyway.

The only problem is, AC:WW sold so well that I don't think we're Nintendo's target audience for the game anymore. If we were they would have put more effort into the graphics etc and give it more feeling.

noneIf it's not a HDD, the only other re-writeable storage medium (disregarding CD-RWs and DVD-RWs) are the SD cards that the console currently uses. I predict that the "fix" is going to be an adaptor which allows people to use SDHC cards on their Wiis. The current Wii hardware can't read the new high-capacity format SD cards, and thus can only use the old ones, which only go up to 4GB.

noneYeah I doubt we'll be seeing the Holographic Storage very soon. I'm betting they'll save that for later. It'll probably be improved SD card support. I don't know why they won't come out and say what it is. They're almost setting it up so that people will be disappointed. Why keep things secretive if they're not even going to live up to everyone's expectations?

none1. Not a hard drive = good, hard drives suck.
2. As I have said many times, reading games in real time from the SD Card slot *may not be fast enough*
The games we are playing arnt designed for SD card speeds, they are designed for (faster) internal speeds.
I think its partly software solution Nintendo is working on, to cache data from an SD card (or USB source) automaticaly on the internal SDD.
Nintendo needs to make it as easy to use/seamless as possible as well as secure.
I'm guessing that purhapes for external loaded games there will be an additional loading time, then it will play as normal.

No they don't. HDDs allow for huge storage, huge data transfer speeds, and great reliability. I've had a ton of SD cards just randomly go on me for no reason, and start refusing to store any data, and wipe themselves, etc. Whereas I've never once had an issue with a hard drive. I've got a 10 year old 19GB HDD sat in my old computer. That computer holds a ton of porn, has had about 15,000 viruses, and not once did the HDD let me down.
Yet I've been through a fair few SD cards that have only been used for MP3s and photos. I think the Wii's storage solutions suffer due to Nintendo's unwillingness to just release a HDD for the system. If they just did that, all the issues would be solved instantly. Even if they adopt support for SDHC cards, which have much more decent storage capacity (I've seen 32GB ones, though they cost like from it's external storage.100+), it's still flash memory that's not too great with intensive rewriting and such.
SD cards were only ever meant for small mobile applications like photos, MP3s and such (and even then they sometimes don't last that long). They were never meant to replace HDDs in home computing. Wii is not home computing in the traditional sense (desktop PCs, etc), but for running software from external storage, it's requirements from that external strorage are similar to what a PC requires. You evr see a PC, or even a laptop which doesn't have a HDD? I've seen laptops ditch floopy disc drives, even optical disk drives and most expansion ports, but I've never ever seen one to use flash storage in place of a HDD.
Wii needs a HDD, or some amazingly 'innovative' equivalent that is just as good. No flash-based card will be a worthy equivalent.

That's possible for ROMs, loading the entire game into RAM and then running it (in fact, that's how console emulation is almost always done). However, this will be a huge limitation for WiiWare games, if the whole game most be loaded into RAM. It was that same limitation that made PlayStation NET Yaroze games look like utter dog-shit, and make them almost NES-like, compared to disc-based PlayStation games, since the whole game had to fit in 2MB RAM.
