Wii System Update: Points, Icons and Instruction Changes

Posted by By (jb) 15 Number of reads 34447

Wii players received an update earlier today with some very minor changes it seems.

Essentially it's not particularly worth reporting, but for those who want in on the details (via NeoGAF):

  • Wii Points have been renamed Nintendo Points in the Wii Shopping Channel, with all previous references fixed. Functionality will remain the same, so essentially just a name change.
  • Controller usage explanation screen will be updated with a separate page for each. Users will be prompted to confirm they have the right pads etc before buying.
  • Some icon designs will be updated.
  • Bugs that allowed Wiiware and VC-piracy as well as custom channels have been fixed (thanks Linkyshinks).
I'll have a side orders of fries, large soda and a hard-drive please, Nintendo!

Hm, fair enough. I still haven't updated to the version that locks the freeloader. Though I probably will soon, as I've been using the homebrew channel to play imports for quite a while now.

But this version prevents from installing any new homebrew channel or updating the one already installed ! THIS is worth mentionning for all those who use it like me to run import games. For those, DO NOT update until further info are known as to how it really affects homebrew.

How d'you run imports with the Homebrew Channel? O:

I still havn't checked it out to be honest.

But wouldn't this update block the Homebrew Channel anyway?

How would you know if it blocks the updating of HBC?
i realise the Twilight hack has been disabled but if you already have HBC everything still runs fine Smilie

There's a program you run from the homebrew channel that which you use to play it. Its better than swapping CDs, forgot what the software was called though.

The app that lets you run import games from the homerew channel is called geckoOS. It has also a nice functionnality that lets you apply action replay codes to your games. I use this app to run my US version of No More Heroes.

Shagster>This update patches ALL the IOSes used to install fakesigned apps such as the homebrew channel. so if you delete the homebrew channel and try reinstalling it after the update you won\'t be able to. The same goes for updating the homebrew channel.

It seems that as long as you stick to the already installed version of the homebrew channel nothing happens, but nothing is so sure yet, so the best thing to do at the moment is NOT to update until the guys behind the homebrew channel find out how to overcome this fix Nintendo has released.

    EDIT :

Shagster>The twilight hack had been blocked by the last update but a workaround had already been found a few hours after the update was released. The last version of the twilight hack is not disabled.

Hold up a sec - there's an app for HB for import Wii games?

Linky please Smilie! The last I heard of it was they'd only managed to sort GC imports, but if Wii's compatible I'm so there Smilie

Import-Games? Even Gamecube ones? I own 2 Import-GC-Games (Tales of Phantasia and Baten Kaitos 1), I want to play them, but my Freeloader won't be of any use on Wii.
Okay, I may install homebrew-channel... *happy*

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Laurelin> The one that does load import wii games doesn\'t work for GameCube games BUT there exist one for loading import gamecube games as well (i too own two import gamecube games : paper mario 2 and Baten Kaitos Origins). I can\'t remember its name right now but since everyone seems so interested in all that stuff, why don\'t you head to Wiibrew.org. Check out their updates to be in the know about what the latest wii system update does to homebrew.

    EDIT :

Laurelin> The app that loads import GC games is simply called GCBooter Smilie

I have no idea why I don't have the Homebrew Channel yet, but if it can get around this newest Wii Update I'm there... I guess...

I'll NEEEED to import Tales of Symphonia 2 if it doesn't make it here... Assuming it can import Wii games that is.

Homebrew app for running import wii games:
    http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Gecko_OS

Runs my US copies of Brawl and One Piece Unlimited Adventure perfectly.

Homebrew app for running import GC games:
    http://wiibrew.org/wiki/GCBooter

(I can\'t get this to run Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 properly, and there are graphical glitches in One Piece Grand Battle Rush. Battle Stadium DON works fine.)

Definitely hope this update doesn\'t delete the homebrew channel as the message suggests. I need if for my imports, and I recently started playing Earthbound on it using a homebrew SNES emulator. Smilie
I also want to import ToS 2...and Naruto Shippuuden GNTEX3...and One Piece Unlimited Cruise...

Only games I'll be wanting to import are Tales games and Harvest Moon games really, but yeah the option is always excellent.

Will have to check it out >.< Like I said god knows why I don't have it yet.

Wavedashing + no tripping in Brawl would be cool. Smilie

Well i can say with certainty it doesn't delete it from your system, as i updated last night, but i think for the most part i am fucked for the time-being with future updates.

But hey, i had too many points on the wii shop not to do it, so i guess i'll have to live with it.

Cool cool. To be honest I can't think of any reason why you'd need to update the homebrew channel anyway...
