Tried Cooking Mama on DS? Now Try Gardening!

By Adam Riley 26.10.2008 6

505 Games has now announced that following on from the shockingly successful Cooking Mama games, the brand is set to extend its mix of pick-up-and-play gameplay and mini-games into the world of gardening with the release of Gardening Mama. Originally launched in December 2007, the first Cooking Mama on Nintendo DS barely made a scratch on the charts, before very randomly shooting up towards the top end of the UK Chart Track listings a few months later (despite no in-store promotions or new advertising push), and has since seen the entire line-up (including a Wii edition and DS sequel) go on to achieve sales of over 1.6 million units across Europe, with the original Cooking Mama proving to be the biggest selling Third Party Nintendo DS title since the system launched back in March 2005.

Square Enix didn't tap into the market with gardening, but will 505 Games?

Heading to Nintendo DS in Spring 2009, Gardening Mama sees Mama heading into the great outdoors to turn an empty garden into a tranquil paradise. Green-fingered players use the touch screen to dig holes, plant seeds, mix fertiliser and ultimately grow a range of fruits, flowers and vegetables. Just like Cooking Mama saw players engaging in different stages of a recipe, Gardening Mama breaks the plant growing process up into small bite-sized chunks of gameplay. The simple mini-games can be played by wannabe gardeners of all ages, as they grow increasingly more colourful and rare flowers.

"The Cooking Mama brand continues to be one of our strongest sales successes on Nintendo DS and we’re confident Gardening Mama will be a fantastic addition to the series. We’re also sure that Cooking Mama fans will love this new take on the incredibly popular franchise."
- Ian Howe, Managing Director, 505 Games.

"I’m confident that players will take great delight in growing plants and vegetables alongside Mama. I hope that players will be inspired to grow real flowers at home after enjoying the experience so much."
- Kazuhiro Ohara, Creative Director, Cooking Mama Ltd.

505 Games is publishing Gardening Mama for Nintendo DS in Europe in Spring 2009, whilst Cooking Mama 2 World Kitchen on Wii is scheduled for release in Spring 2009 and sees Mama transported into a glorious 3D world for the first time.

Why does the actress in the commercial act like a 4 year old? Isn't she supposed to be trying to sell the product, not turn people off from buying it?

Maybe that's where Square Enix went wrong...Then again, I hardly expect adverts for Gardening Mama to be much better Smilie

Just when you thought you wouldn\'t see a worse game...

Cooking and gardening are chores I actively avoid...who\'d want to pay money to do chores.... >_>

I'd pay money to do choirs. If it was an all hot female choir, that is.

Those bulbs were planted too deep, they'll never grow. Fail.
