Nintendo UK: "We never lost its passion for core gamers"

By Jorge Ba-oh 30.10.2008 9

Yet more promises from Nintendo for more core games today with the UK division speaking up.

Industry veterans, developers and even gamers themselves have expressed their views during the Wii near-two-year life on the shift towards the casual market and the supposed dumping of the core gamer.

UK boss David Yarnton aired his own views in the latest edition of industry magazine MCV, that Nintendo has "never lost its passion for core gamers", reiterating past company statements that they are on the way.

It’s simply not true, Nintendo has never lost its passion for core gamers. Nintendo would like to bring smiles to as many different faces as possible and produce games which appeal to mainstream and gaming audiences worldwide.

We have never neglected core gamers. We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years.

These games aren’t ready to launch – but are being worked on by all development teams.

Recently launched popular Nintendo gaming franchises have included Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Wario Land: Shake Dimension. There is also a vast array of third party core gaming titles available for the Wii console.

That's all good in theory, but it would be fab to see some of these projects in development. How bout it, Nintendo?

lol third parties.

But in all seriousness, they're being awfully defensive about it atm...

And you know what they say about people who're insanely defensive about not being gay.

They're GAY.

Waiting for what?
If the great games that are already out haven't made you buy a Wii, I seriously doubt anything will.

If you ask me he's waiting for a price drop

£180 may not be worth Galaxy and Brawl (+ your other personal interests) to everyone.

This was the closing statement from Nintendo at the end of an Edge article in the October issue (but it came out a couple of months ago). Apparently it came from Kyoto. DY ain't airing jack.

Less posty, more gamey.

I was referring to:
- de Blob
- Dr. Mario Online Rx
- Mario Kart Wii
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- No More Heroes
- Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
- Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Super Paper Mario
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- Tetris Party
- WarioLand 4: Shake It
- WarioWare: Smooth Moves
- World of Goo
- Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros Treasure

Those are hardly niche games and that's not including all the Virtual Console gems.

Strong Bad is a niche game, because it mostly appeals to HomeStar Runner fans, of which there aren't too many. The game is also available on PC so he would have it if he wanted it.

I bolded the games I myself don't own. That's what I meant about personal interests. As far as he is concerned, he may not be greatly bothered about any of those games minus a couple.

You\'re right about Strong Bad. It is very niche and I shouldn\'t have included it.

However, the point is that there is a wide variety of great games already available on the system, so if he can\'t find a few that he likes, then he\'s unlikely to find any in the future. I certainly hope he can, but I\'m not expecting anything to change.
