Nintendo Responds to Commodore-64 Virtual Console Issue

Nintendo Responds to Commodore-64 Virtual Console Issue on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Update - Nintendo UK has come back to Cubed³ with a full response to the situation regarding the issues related to the Virtual Console edition of 'Mayhem in Monsterland' from the Commodore-64.

Nintendo and Commodore Gaming are sorry that some customers are disappointed with the differences in the appearance of the Virtual Console version of Mayhem in Monsterland, in relation to the original Commodore 64 version.

The original version of Mayhem in Monsterland was released in 1993, far later than most other games released for the Commodore 64. When designed, the game took advantage of extremely complex coding that exploited the original hardware in unconventional ways. Therefore, it was possible to display graphics that normally would not have been possible on the Commodore 64.

The Virtual Console versions of classic games sometimes differ slightly from the original versions. The majority of Virtual Console titles have been recreated exactly to preserve the original look and feel of the game. However some developers may choose to update and/or modify certain features within a game, in addition to utilising the differing control functionality of the Wii console, and this may cause some differences between the classic and the Virtual Console versions of games.

Hopefully there will be no further issues with other classic Commodore-64 games hitting the Virtual Console in the future.

Original Story - Following the news of issues arising with the Virtual Console edition of Mayhem in Monsterland on the Commodore-64, Nintendo UK has now responded. People purchasing the latest Commodore-64 offering on Nintendo's retro download service were surprised to find that there were visual differences from the original, as well as some audio problems, as pointed out in Cubed³'s recent story.

In response to the situation, a representative from the Nintendo UK office as stated the following:

"We are sorry that some of the features of your Virtual Console game differ from that of the original title. The majority of Virtual Console titles have been recreated exactly to preserve the original look and feel of the game, however some developers may choose to update features within a game to reflect the differing control and console functionality."

With any luck the developer that brought Mayhem in Monsterland to Virtual Console will submit a fixed version to Nintendo so fans can re-download the classic game and not feel like they have wasted their money.

If there are further developments, Cubed³ will definitely let readers know...

I doubt that's the problem. =/

So a developer would release a buggered up "update" of their old game on the Virtual Console, would they?

Sure.

Well, Nintendo's done it before, hence the updated versions of games that appear from time-to-time. So it's not totally unbelievable!

Guess you're right.

With the way Majora's Mask was ported to the GC, I guess it's not uncommon for an old game to mess up in various ways when ported to a new console.

Exactly. I think that sometimes it doesn't become fully apparent the extent of the errors until the game is finally out there. Sad, but true. With any luck the issue will be resolved in due course and those that have already bought it will be able to download a rectified version.

I've been assured that Nintendo is chasing this up, so no doubt it'll be sorted Smilie

Are there any other known games that haven't made the transition to Virtual Console very well? Are they only Commodore 64 games? Or is Mayhem the only known one at the moment?

Weren't there issues with Mario Kart 64 and Kirby on the NES? Don't recall exactly. But the Nintendo games have been updated pretty sharpish. Obviously the vetting of C64 games isn't quite as thorough.

Rofl, they copy-pasted most of the old statement.

At least Nintendo went away and investigated the reason behind it. When first informed they weren't aware there was even as issue. Nintendo UK reps read C3, so when there are issues people need bringing up, it's always worth mentioning them to see if something can be sorted...

A 60htz option would be nice for megadrive titles.
