Update - Nintendo UK has come back to Cubed³ with a full response to the situation regarding the issues related to the Virtual Console edition of 'Mayhem in Monsterland' from the Commodore-64.
Nintendo and Commodore Gaming are sorry that some customers are disappointed with the differences in the appearance of the Virtual Console version of Mayhem in Monsterland, in relation to the original Commodore 64 version. The original version of Mayhem in Monsterland was released in 1993, far later than most other games released for the Commodore 64. When designed, the game took advantage of extremely complex coding that exploited the original hardware in unconventional ways. Therefore, it was possible to display graphics that normally would not have been possible on the Commodore 64.
The Virtual Console versions of classic games sometimes differ slightly from the original versions. The majority of Virtual Console titles have been recreated exactly to preserve the original look and feel of the game. However some developers may choose to update and/or modify certain features within a game, in addition to utilising the differing control functionality of the Wii console, and this may cause some differences between the classic and the Virtual Console versions of games.
Hopefully there will be no further issues with other classic Commodore-64 games hitting the Virtual Console in the future.
In response to the situation, a representative from the Nintendo UK office as stated the following:
"We are sorry that some of the features of your Virtual Console game differ from that of the original title. The majority of Virtual Console titles have been recreated exactly to preserve the original look and feel of the game, however some developers may choose to update features within a game to reflect the differing control and console functionality."
With any luck the developer that brought Mayhem in Monsterland to Virtual Console will submit a fixed version to Nintendo so fans can re-download the classic game and not feel like they have wasted their money.
If there are further developments, Cubed³ will definitely let readers know...
