New Info on DSi Features

By Shane Jury 31.10.2008 10

The booklet included with the Japanese units of Nintendo's new DSi have revealed unknown details on the handheld.

From GoNintendo, previously unknown features include the ability for SDHC Cards, a faster and potentially larger version of standard SD Cards. Given the size of the unit, a new power adapter was a given, but here it's confirmed.

For the DSi's WiFi boost, Nintendo will be including their own licensed WPA code for the unit, as well as only allowing for 802.11b and 802.11g speeds.

As far as specs go, the DSi will be 214g in weight, 74.9mm by 137mm by 18.9mm in size, and for battery life, it will be 3-4 hours on the brightest setting, then 4-6, 6-9, 8-12 and finally 9-14 on the dimmest setting, thereby confirming a fifth Brightness option. Screen resolution will be at 256x192, and both screens are at 3.25 overall size.

Also, given the model number being TWL-001, it is possible that the codename for the DSi was Twilight, or something to that effect, like how the Wii still retains the Revolution name through the RVL Model Numbers.

Will any C3 readers be importing one of these units, or waiting for an official Europe release?

I'll wait with patience here in the US, but I will be most definitely getting one when they do finally release... Christmas of next year most likely... Smilie

I'm still playing my 'DSphat' today. Never bothered with a Lite. The DSi may sound tempting, but I'm still able to play DS games with the one I have now, so there's not much point in getting essentially another DS.

I mean, you might as well just get a PSP or other game console.

I'll be getting one when they launch here in the UK, as my DS Lite's hinge has cracked and the touchscreen just refuses to work properly, even though I've looked after it wellSmilie.

Trouble is, DSi will have access to the DSWare store, something which neither the Phat or Lite will, and the chances of new games appearing exclusively on that service (unconfirmed, but that Warioware Minigame-creator seems to be one) are reasonably high.

So unless Nintendo release a GBA expansion that allows for SD Card use and access to the store, present DS owners will be missing out.

I'm happy with my DSPhat.

If theres some nice augmented reality stuff I'll get a DSi, if not I'll wait a few years for the next proper upgrade.
I suspect the DSi is going to be Nintendos trail for features of their next system anyway.

"Given the size of the unit, a new power adapter was a given, but here it's confirmed."

Dont see why, its only marginaly different size to the lite.
In fact, Id say

"Given the size of the system, it would be utterly stupid to have yet another adapter, but they did it anyway".

Look on Nintendos sites, they do repairs.
I heard it can take awhile though.

Mm, my DS Lite hinge broke recently too, and I'm not sure if Nintendo UK will repair it as it's Jap import...don't care though, as I've decided to buy a replacement casing for it. I would definitely have imported a japanese DSi if not for the region implications with the shop channel. So I guess I'll be waiting for the Europe release. Smilie

Sounds unnecessary!
