Special Report: Nintendo Storms Japan with DSi; PS3 Topples Wii on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The big week everyone was waiting for has finally arrived, with the release of the DSi, plus new PS3 bundles, as well as key software launches. The DSi has sold through its entire first shipment of 200,000 units, although only 171,925 were counted by the time Media Create updated this week's list. But this still places the new DS version over three times the number of PSP-3000 units sold. The PS3 benefitted from Gran Turismo 5 and DualShock 3 software/hardware bundles, plus the heavy-hitting duo of Grand Theft Auto IV and the massively hyped LittleBigPlanet, boosting the previously struggling platform up to just shy of 40,000 and above the Wii this week.

The DSi launched last Saturday (1st November) alongside Square Enix and tri-Ace's third Valkyrie Profile game, and the first on a Nintendo system, Nintendo's own Personal Trainer: Walking, which comes with a wireless Pedometer, as well as Marvelous Entertainment and Matrix Software's highly anticipated RPG 'Avalon Code'. Valkyrie Profile was unable to claim the top spot, but considering GTAIV launched on the usual Thursday new release day compared to the Saturday launch of S-E's venerable Strategy RPG experience, the ~80,000 units sold is quite impressive and certainly in-line with the PSP remake of the original PSone game's first week. LittleBigPlanet will be seen as a slow-starter considering SCE has expectations of 250,000 sales before the year is out, whilst Pokémon Platinum continues to go strong, nearing the two million mark and easily surpassing Pokémon Emerald from the GBA. In its second week, Girls Mode holds very well, showing signs of a long-term seller, now at nearly 120,000 units, whilst Rhythm Tengoku on DS goes from strength-to-strength, with a renewed advertising campaign taking place in Japan right now that will ensure more sales throughout the impending festive period.

GTAIV might look impressive given how Western games do not normally sell too well in Japan, but Capcom saw greater returns with GTA: San Andreas earlier this year. All eyes will now be on how well the PS3 and 360 versions hold up next week. Surprisingly low on its début week is Nintendo's Personal Trainer, although a No.9 placing and sales of 26,000 are nothing to turn your nose up at. However, given the strength of Nintendo's other training style titles, and how this was launched along with new hardware, it was expected by many that it could storm the chart this week. Clearly not, though. Perhaps it will be a slow burner, just as Wii Music is turning out to be, with a total of 164,000 copies sold in its third week, dipping out of the Top 10 due to all the new entries this week, one of which is the Nintendo DS port of Chocobo's Dungeon from Wii, entering at No.10 with just over 26,000 sales. The Wii version hit at the tail end of 2007 and struggled to reach even 100,000 sales in total, so it will be intriguing to see how the DS version fares given its slower start than the home console edition (which hits Europe tomorrow, 7th November, fact fans!).

Sales of the gorgeous-looking Avalon Code from the team that created the Final Fantasy III and IV DS remakes for Square Enix may well look poor, but Marvelous Entertainment only had moderate expectations of the game, hoping it would selling between 50,000 and 60,000 copies in total for the Japanese market. With 20,000 from a Saturday launch, the company could well be very satisfied with its performance so far. There are worrying signs for the latest Wii Harvest Moon, though, which only scraped in at No.17 with about 16,000, starting a little weaker than its predecessor 'Tree of Tranquility'. However, as the DS showed, the fanbase takes a while to warm up, with early DS editions scraping to 100,000 in their lifetime, before the third game really took off and hit around 300,000 units instead.

Elsewhere, Inazuma Eleven continues to hang around, now amassing sales of around 133,000, according to Famitsu data, and is being helped by the airing of its anime show, which publicises the fantastic DS RPG from Level-5 at the end of each episode. Perhaps when Professor Layton's third and final entry into the current DS trilogy hits at the end of November there will be some cross-promotion activity to boost Inazuma even more. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia plummets to No.32, but its strong start last week and average sales this week give it a rounded total of 26,000 (again Famitsu data, not M-C as it is not available outside the Top 10) and puts it in line to beat Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin in the long-run.

Finally, Tenchu 4 has dropped like a rock to No.36, whilst Dragon Ball Origins on DS is still hanging around, along with Culdcept DS from SEGA and Bandai Namco's second Taiko no Tatsujin DS game.

Be sure to check out the full list below, which includes a budget release of the fantastic RPG 'Tales of Innocence' for DS:

With Nintendo reportedly shipping a further 100,000 units of the DSi to Japan this week, along with the ~30,000 units that did not make the Media Create count this time round, Nintendo's revised format will likely easily maintain its No.1 spot. The question is, though, just how well will the PS3 hold on - can it keep above Wii for another week?

Wow i never new GTA was so popular in Japan, and Little Big planet is doing well aswell, it might make the PS3 stay up for a while, but when Animal crossing comes out, i bet the Wii sales go soring again.

GTA doing better than LBP? Looks like Japan are too \"cool\" for kiddy games too That\'s a surprise! ^^;

To be honest I expect this trend to pick up as PS3 gets more good exclusives, which isn\'t often. Obviously people are more likely to buy GTA on PS3 in Japan too.

I wander which one was more of the system seller, GTA or LBP?

There were bundles for both GTA5 and LBP, so both of those were probably the main contributing factors for the hardware boost.

LBP deserves to whipe the floor with GTA.

I actually think LBP is just as over-rated as GTAIV. The idea's amazing and it looks lovely, but as a platformer in general it's pretty so-so...

Valkyrie Profile DS is bloody hard, and of course it doesn't help that I don't understand Japanese Smilie

LBP is creative though, which trumphs GTA easily.

I wouldnt be supprised if the best LBP levels are in a year or two once everyone gets to grips with the editor.

Most games with user-content end up with WAYYY better levels then the developers do.

Incidently, rather funny views on GTA4 here;
