Opera have revealed the upgrades soon to be added to their Internet Browser Channel for Wii, including a new interface and tabs.
Shown off in Online Gaming Magazine GameReactor, the known upgrades are;
- A new button interface.
- Compatibility with the Wii Speak Peripheral (how this would work and what it would work with are currently unknown).
- A Tab Cube that keeps track of other sites you are browsing (the image below may or may not be a mockup), and can be toggled as seeable or invisible for convenience.
- The ability to check your Wii's Mail from the channel as opposed to the main Wii menu only.

There are most likely other new features not revealed yet, although the upgrade is due in December at the same pricepoint of 500 Wii Points as the original.
It is stated that 'if you paid for the first version of the browser, you don't have to pay for this one', although this is slightly confusing for those that received the channel when it was free, it is worth considering that for any that own it, the Channel is considered as 'Purchased' from the Shop Channel listing...

Odd - quite sure how it'd work for those who nabbed it for free. Really not liking the interface in that mockup image at all, sounds neat but looks really quite ugly.

I always found it fast! FINALLY tabs! It took long enough! I got my opera for free, but I won't be paying for no upgrade!

Yes, definitely agreed. Depends on Adobe and their licensing issues. Definitely needs an update!

Thank god there adding tabs, the cube looks like a funky solution.
The wiispeak thing is odd, unless there adding voice recognition?

Probably support for Mics over possibly audio messengers, and recording in flash games.
Voice recognition would be awesome!

The PS3 browser has a newer version of flash now so I expect this update to have the same. Also, I can't see them charging for the update for users who already have it (be it those who got it for free or paid 500 point), don't forget, this will probably have minor security fixes too so they can't charge people for those can they?

Nice, allthough they are still missing a really obvious feature imho;
Intergration with WiiConnect24.
Why cant I have some websites auto-cached to the hard drive and get *instant* access in the morning when I boot my Wii?
Just let us say "Use 50MB of the Wii's internet memory for cacheing my favorates every 5 hours" with a tick-box.
I think this would be a hugely usefull feature...getting to your email in about 10 seconds of the machine turning on.

If Macromedia has finaly given the SDK for flash9 out, then Opera will have it in.
Opera keeps pretty uptodata on standards, but they have to play by the rules.
Dont think theres anything to be secure about.
If there was anyway for the browser to be exploited, homebrewers would have found it already. (and thats very unlikely to start with...with a console its easy to make this stuff 100% secure because theres only one app running at a time).
Opera is generaly one of the most secure browsers anyway too.

This sounds really great and I am looking forward to downloading this update in December. I really hope they update flash too.
However, what bothers me about all this is that only gonintendo.com seems to have the facts on it. If you go to the actual GameReactor website, there appears to be no mention of it anywhere. Part of me almost feels like this is some sort of hoax.( Edited 12.11.2008 06:43 by Sonic_13 )
