    Wii Updates Policies, Blocks Hacks

What initially seemed like a standard update could be problematic for homebrew users in the latest Wii system update.

The update to Wii Menu 3.4 allows for USB keyboards to be used in the Mii Channel, one again improving parental controls and also prevents the Twilight Hack (for use in homebrew) to be copied to the machine, according to Wii Brew

With this update, Parental Controls have been enhanced, USB keyboard support is available for the Mii Channel, and system functions have been improved.
The Wii User Agreement, which includes the Wii Privacy Policy, has been updated. Because the updated agreement applies to you and your use of the Wii Network Service, you should view the updated version by clicking on the Wii icon located on the lower-left portion of the Wii Channel menu, selecting Wii Settings, accessing the Internet setting, and selecting User Agreements.

System function changes include improved disc reading speeds and better performance with SD Cards. The Tanooki noticed that World of Goo transferred to a card in 30 seconds, as opposed to a previous time of up to 15 minutes.

We may without notifying you, download updates, patches, upgrades and similar software to your Wii Console and may disable unauthorized or illegal software placed on your Wii Console to ensure that your Wii Console is operating properly and efficiently, comply with applicable laws, assist law enforcement, protect us and our customers, or prevent the use and distribution of software obtained through improper channels.

Nintendo's privacy policy is the key update here, with conditions for downloading updates changed from "we may download updates" to "may without notifying you", which could cause a lot more hassle for the Wii Homebrew scene in the future.

Damn, with the loading and SD Card reading this sounds like a good update...

I've heard that HomeBrew Channel and GeckoOS still work with this update, but this also turns on "Auto Update", meaning that eventually they'll be stopped...

    God dammit Nintendo.

Aye, still works but could suddenly stop working which is really irritating. There will be bound to be workarounds, but this really doesn't look too good for homebrewers.

Damn damn damn. >.< I need my imports. Well, I have 2 Wiis, so if the worst happens and it all gets blocked with an update, I'll just use one for homebrew without updating it and the other I'll keep clean and get the newest updates on.

Why doesn't Nintendo understand that HomeBrew is only a problem if used to play pirated game... Most HomeBrewers don't use it for that. (not updating, latest info shows that it deletes channels)

Even if they do understand that, they'd want all these apps to be sold for money from themselves, and they don't want you importing games, and they don't want the Wii playimg DVDs etc.

But, with imported games they still get money. And they are not going to activate DVD playing themselves. So they have no excuse for it. (DVD plays better on Wii than with DVD players.... yay for no blurry stretching.)

Yeah transferring some data to and from the SD Card can take pathetically long. Which is why it annoys me that I cannot get this update for the forseeable future...

Gotta say, those new transfer speeds are excellent. Lament the lack of a storage space booster if you will, but this update has made it a heck of a lot more bearable. Smilie

I downloaded and Homebrew channel still working.

To be honest though, Nintendo could easily have told the Wii to delete the channel by now if they were that worried - the same way it can delete the hacked twilight princess save file, I honestly think they are leaving that as a last resort. If they can lock the piracy out without disabling homebrew I think they will.

    Improved disc reading speeds? weird.

Good that SD speed has increased. I'm guessing it was down the ineffiently written encrpytion systems the first time.

    "parental controls "

What exactly do they keep changing there anyway? :p

Is piracy even possible using homebrew? I mean for Wii games? I didn't think it was. Oh, I think VC games can be pirated...dunno why you'd bother though...They're not THAT expensive...

I can't wait for this generation to end and Nintendo stop updating the Wii, then we can play our imports in peace. Smilie

What difference would it make to you?

If Nintendo for some bezire reason ended this generation tommorow, no more updates would prevent imports, and no more updates would mean you get no more functionality.

If Nintendo coninutes this gen, but you just dont update - nothing would prevent imports, you get no more functionality.

So what difference does it make to you :?

Nintendo stoping supporting the Wii, or you just not updating = same thing.

It always states "Parental Controls are available" after every update. I believe this is the only time (or perhaps one other time) that parental controls have actually been modified in some way (not sure in what way though).

Damn Nintendo and their money making scheme's, i mean they're already the 2nd richest company in Japan, behind toyota.

But then, I don't know why i'm complaining, I don't use homebrew, and the SD card timing and disk reading can only make the console better in my point of view.
