An interview with a Microsoft VP has suggested that the Wii isn't an online connected platform.
Speaking to Microsoft's VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business, Chris Lewis, EDGE magazine discussed Nintendo's and Microsoft's different approaches to online infrastructures and what the company feels they offer over Nintendo's little white box.
I think Nintendo and Microsoft have probably done most to open up a broader spectrum of people to gaming. From our point of view, it's about Xbox Live, about having online right at the center of the architecture. Xbox all along has been about connected-ness. … That to me is really key in terms of the future.
Nintendo occupies a different space to us in that regard as well, in that [the Wii] isn't an online connected platform [perhaps by Microsoft's definition?], it isn't high definition, it doesn't offer the scalability we offer in the SKU lineup and the storage ability. … I certainly think we do have an appetite for getting into those broad family genres, and that part of the strategy will continue to be so, but I think we clearly want to appeal to all tastes. Our aspiration is to win overall, and to do that we need to continue to bring content to all the different genres in the market, with Xbox Live at the heart of that.
Chris Lewis, VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft EMEA

Some Nintendo fans have jumped on the mention of online but, however it's most likely a comparison to the Xbox Live's sense of a community platform, instead of implying the Wii lacks online. Whilst the Wii and DS are fully capable of connecting to the internet, they seem to lack a holistic, fully integrated system for downloading, playing and chatting online.
What do you think of Nintendo's currently online setup? Should the Japanese giant follow in the footsteps of Microsoft in their successful tags and friends system?

Fair enough comment really - I don't think its about a 'sense of community', its just more an observation of 'the platform' as a whole- every aspect of the 360 is connected to live, its all very fluid. The wii is technically online, but it isn't really an online 'platform' in general.

The Wii's online service is very basic. But it's free, so I don't complain too much. I just got Mario Kart and it's online mode has been running great for me, especially compared to my experiences with Smash Bros...

Smash runs decently for me, really hard to find randomers to battle and it freezes too. Mario Kart is pretty decent, and stable enough.
Still though, a universal Nintendo Name would make things so much easier, more devs would likely want to go online on the Wii and people would be happy.

not an online platform... COD:WAW is pretty good online, SSBB is good online, MKW is good online... and the list grows. Also, it\'s free, unlike \"LIVE.\"
Also, I like not having people yelling into their mics (profanity from a 10 year old who shouldn\'t even be on) when I\'m playing COD:WAW and SSBB.( Edited 25.11.2008 03:09 by edracon )

I can't stand Brawl's online. It moves tangibly slower with or without lag - and the whole appeal of Smash is its breakneck action.
Could have been amazing, but its pace is ruined.
I'll have to get Mario Kart at some point...

Wii's internet capability is crap, the browsing experience is lame certainly. It's still a hollow aggressive comment none the less from him. Games like MK Wii show that the service can work very well.

The Wii has a webbrowser.
The 360 does not.
Thus, I dont think they can really make this claim, despite what bells and whistles Xbox live has.
The Wii is probably the fastest, cheapest, internet browseing device in the world, in fact.
I dont know any other device that lets you browse the web within 15 seconds or turning it on, let alone from a tv.

Wii's online is pathetic, and smash bros online is atrocious. Mario Kart one is at least playable.

Smash Bros' online is bad considering options etc, but in the end it lets you play your friends over the internet, which is all I've ever wanted from Smash online.
The Wii's online does suck, but there are some good things about it, and there are more VC and Wiiware games I'd rather get than XBLAH games.

Exactly. I knew the fanboys would get their knickers in a twist over this. What he\'s saying makes perfect sense. The Wii\'s online capabilities are disjointed and are not universal (friend codes, extra channels, that sort of shit) whereas the 360 is all interlinked (even PSN is).

This is just typical PR smack and not to be taken seriously. Wii's online services work quite well, but yes, it's not the central focus of the system like the 360. Which is centralized, focused, and cohesive.
On the flip side, Microsoft had to establish a huge online infrastructure to support this kind of service at this level. Which is why they need you to pay for it. And there still losing money on their Xbox Live services. Fortunately, they've recently guided themselves back into the black thanks to great software sales.
Nintendo is solely a game company, and doesn't have the near infinitely deep pockets to support that kind of online infrastructure for the long term. In addition, it goes against their business ethic of having to charge their customers just to play with others online.

I don't see how anyone can defend the Wii's online as anything other than functional. And that's being generous. The Wii handles the internet about as well as my phone. That's not knocking it, it just isn't the focus. So chill those beans right down.
No no, that is the list.
*waits for some bore to produce a wiki page of Wii online connected games and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about because I haven't played Mario Strikers online and actually it's not too bad and really quite playable, as if 'not too bad and really quite playable' was the watermark by which all online games are measured*
Less posty, more gamey.

The best online game the Wii has doesn't even use the Nintendo Wifi service: Medal of Honor Heroes 2. Kind of sad really.

I thought that would be enough, but due to the lack of options, I can't get a decent match. At least let me choose the region like in Mario Kart, and choosing the latency I want to play with would go a long way too. Why couldn't they have rooms? They should have those at least so it is playable.
To have made it good, they could've had leader boards, ranks, customisable battles (ie allow us to change battle options), level sharing and voice support.
There's room on the boat

Matches with friends are decent enough for me. Smash Bros is a hard game to run over the internet due to needing to send so much data so quickly, so I'd have been fine if we didn't have random matchup at all and only friend matches, especially since the chances of there being no online for Smash at all seemed pretty high at one point. I never play random matchup on any of my online games so this might be why I don't mind... but I only ever play online with friends and for that the options are fine.
And voice chat was impossible at the time, and this is the Wii's fault, not Smash Bros'.
