Sega Explain 3D Sonic Gimmicks on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

A Sonic Team developer has discussed the reasons for adding in the werehog in Unleashed.

Since the gaming world's favourite hedgehog entered the 3D realm, he's been greeted with different gameplay experiments - walking around with robot legs, cars, guns, treasure hunting - but where's the 3 acts of speedy platforming bliss?

Sonic Unleashed has taken the series back to basics with the daytime: well-structured, fast levels, multiple routes, less leaps of faith and gorgeous settings. The night-time approach is filled with button mashing sections with the quirky werehog. Although there's decent Mario-inspired platforming, it means less traditional Sonic sections.

In the latest IGN 3 Red Lights podcast, a member of Sonic Team mentions why alternate forms of gameplay have been included in the 3D outings.

I asked one of the developers at TGS, you know I was like, come on everybody just wants Sonic running, like whats up with the werehog? And he was like, well, here's the deal… he runs at this miles per hour, kilometers per hour, and he laid out all of the statistics on how fast this hedgehog goes, and he was like In order to make a game where Sonic is running and everybody enjoys the whole thing we'd have to design this many miles of level, and it was some ungodly number. And he's like and that would be like maybe a three hour game and I was like wow, well that kinda stinks and he's like yeah, so we gotta do this other stuff.

Thanks to GoNintendo.

Smilie sonic on DC was the best 3d games maybe a mix of that and sonic levels like in the new one

I think people would be happier if they just went ahead and made a traditional 'good' 3 hour Sonic game.

Not that I care. I don't play Sonic games.

I don\'t mind the other gameplay styles as much, but the regular Sonic levels should have priority, and recently it looks like it\'s the opposite.

Werehog is fine, but the ratio is annoying. 3x as many levels, that take longer to complete.

Why not make 10 levels that are like Unleashed\'s Daytime Acts, 3 acts per level and a good boss. Then have 3 or 4 playable characters - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, Shadow - someone like that. If they want to vary the gameplay, have specific routes in the levels for each, and keep all the experimental styles for mini-games or extra modes.

I pity the poor bastard to had to transcribe that.

What was it like again?

Edit. JB you\'ve just described the classic Sonics:-D Apart from that Shadow character, he can go hang. You\'re absolutely right. Why not take the time and effort to construct the \'miles of level\'? There\'s something fundamentally wrong with the way the devs are thinking - like Sonic\'s got to be travelling at screen-breaking speed all the time. Emerald Hill hasn\'t got \'miles of level\'. Angel Island hasn\'t got \'miles of level\'. Why not put some fucking effort in instead of castrating the player with slow tedious sections to pad the game out?

*slides into every other Sonic thread ever*

I hate how a lot of critics want Sonic to be at lightning speeds all the time when I never really saw his as being speedy in the old days. Sure he would run through hoops but it was mostly well contructed platforming that made him so great. Now with games like unleashed and rush, it's like "let's race through the level as fast as possible" with hardly anything in terms of platforming.

I can understand there point, but sonic doesn't really need to be speeding through every level without a stop for thought, that's what made the 2D sonic games great becase you had to think of which route you could take, the quick one, or the one with more enemies and rings for a higher score (thinks of Marble zone). And that's really what's missing from 3D sonic games in general, he can be fast but he doesn't need to rush though the whole level on what is practically a straight route.

Unleashed is fantastic. Worth it for the 3 Daytime acts per world alone IMO. I can see myself replaying these a stupid amount of times.

Without the werehog stages I wouldn\'t complain, and I\'m sure reviewers wouldn\'t either.

To add more playability, add more optional playable characters, i.e. Tails, Knuckles and Amy + unlockables like in the Advance series.

Shittest excuse ever.
If he\'s worried about how small the game is going to be why not make it for wiiware, XBLA, PSN? Small games are fine on those platforms.

I would love a Sonic WiiWare game without all the gimmicks. I certainly wouldn't mind it being smaller as long as it's filled with fun, classic Sonic gameplay.

Then I was like awww, shit no, Sonic Team! And then they were like mmmmmmm-hmmm.

Sonic and the Secret Rings was enough...

Really Sonic Team? That's not the real answer, it can't be.

Tile based 3D is quite possible, dunno why they dont do that.
Sure, it would be a bit less diverse, but its how you get miles of 3D landscape without huge budgets.

It seems like they are taking half-a-year to a year developing each game. They are saying it would take more time to makes more maps, THEN THEY SHOULD TAKE MORE TIME! Or, make it WiiWare/XBOXlivearcade/PSN.

I still think there were only three good sonic games (sonic 1,2,&3).
If this one can have him running fast, and they can make the werehog part work, I might check it out.

Overall, I can't even trust sega after they made all the crappy sonic games.

I am definately not buying it (not with madworld and the conduit on their way), I may rent it or borrow it,
I hope it's good, though. Then sega might make some more good sonic games.

I dunno, we knew about Sonic 2006 around E3 2005, and some versions weren't released until 2007. That game was incredibly unfinished on so many levels, which means for most games they just reveal them nearer to completion date rather than revealing them early.

Sonic Unleashed, when first revealed, did not look much different to how it does now. The HDU has changed slightly and the graphics are much better than what we originally saw, but that's about it. Unleashed is almost glitchless, and is easily the least glitchy 3D Sonic ever made. I say they'd been making it for at least 2 years for it to be such a huge improvement over Sonic 2006.

"I still think there were only three good sonic games (sonic 1,2,&3). "

Not at all.
Sond & Knuckles was pretty darn good.

Sonic Advanced 1/2 was good.
Sonic Rush was excelent.

Cant speak for the GameGear games, but even on the 2D side theres more then 3 good sonic games.
