Reports have started to circulate today suggesting that Need For Speed maybe cancelled or put on hiatus.
According to video game show The Electric Playground, the series may be cut from Electronic Art's line-up, or likely put on hold for some time.
We're working through a process on people, products, and facilities at EA and don't have any announcements today. EA director of communications
Undercover, the latest installment of the longrunning line of racing games, had a luke-warm reception from press and fans, and didn't reach the top 10 NPD sales during November 2008.
Instead of being written off entirely, the series could see longer development times and a higher-quality end product. EA CEO John Riccitiello mentioned a 24-month development cycle instead of an incredibly short 12-month period. The likely outcome would probably a higher-quality Need for Speed every 2 or so years, instead of rushing an average product out to market every 10, 12 months.

Yeah they might want to stop with the retarded yearly games. EA needs to stop that with all their franchises.

Defo, it's been so bloody saturated in the last two years. With the sports yearly games it's a given, but the sheer number of NFS titles of late have seemed like quite a few (tho I don't know how many offhand).

Wow they finally run it into the ground.
I'm sure it will be back in 15 years when everyone feels nostalgic about it and people are losing interest with burnout.
It will just be called Need For Speed, it will be a "franchise reboot" almost a remake of the very first one but not quite.

Don't play too much Need for Speed until you pass it. And I have never liked Need for Speed games, so I won't miss it. Actually the only racing game with 'real' cars I liked was Burnout 2.

I felt, that they didn't make a Need for Speed in like... 4 or 5 years. I never even drove more then 2 races, because it was so boring and streamlined.
I think they should have killed NfS after part 4 or so, it was even finish back then.
So nothing's lost to the world.
