Wii Fit & Mario Kart Beat GTA IV in 2008 on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

New sales totals for the five biggest sellers across the world in 2008 have been released and surprisingly GTA IV was not at the top of the pack, mainly due to its moderate performance in Japan. In fact, Rockstar's much-hyped game failed to even take the runners-up spot, with Mario Kart Wii leaping in at No.1 and Wii Fit close behind at No.2, both being strongly helped along the way by stellar performances in not only the UK and US markets, but in the Land of the Rising Sun as well.

Check out the break-down of sales for each territory below:

Total Sales (Breakdowns: US | Japan | UK)
1.) Mario Kart Wii - 8,940,000 (5,000,000 | 2,000,000 | 1,940,000)
2.) Wii Fit - 8,310,000 (4,550,000 | 2,150,000 | 1,610,000)
3.) Grand Theft Auto IV - 7,290,000 (5,180,000 | 256,000 | 1,850,000)
4.) Super Smash Bros Brawl - 6,320,000 (4,170,000 | 1,750,000 | 404,000)
5.) Call of Duty: World at War - 5,890,000 (4,460,000 | N/A | 1,430,000)

What do you make of this Top 5 list? Is it surprising to see Super Smash Bros. Brawl performing rather averagely in the UK compared to the other games?

Wow, personally would have expected Brawl to sell a full million more units in the UK than it did. Smilie

Still, its awesome to see some quality Nintendo titles tearing it up like that. Brawl is well on its way to outselling Melee, and will likely stay strong throughout the Wii's life.

I need to get Mario Kart Wii still. I'm not sure how I'm going to like the steering and the motorcycles though. I feel I'm just going to be disappointed after how utterly sublime Mario Kart DS was.

Smash Wii has easily surpassed Melee's Japanese sales, that's for sure. No idea about the UK or US, though.

As for MK Wii, after playing it with the wheel, I simply couldn't play it without! Really makes such a difference, and whilst the one-player mode is very limited (still fun, though), the online options really breathe new life into it.

Your going to love it or hate it.
I hate it...... Smilie
Nice to see Mario Kart outsell Wii Fit (Though I am a bit surprised it did)

for some reason Wii gamers themselfs seem to have fallen for the "its just fit and spots" argument, thats why Smilie

Good games do well on Wii, accessibility just raises the potential audience.

hooray for mario kart! one of the best racing games on the wii.

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!

I don't even like Mario Kart Wii that much, but it would be incredibly uncharacteristic for me not to say:

"Haahaa GTA got owned!!"

That feels better. Smilie

Smash Bros has suffered from lack of advertising post release over here. One or two adverts now and again. Wii fit seems to have the appeal. Even though im bored of Brawl, i wouldnt sell it simply because it is one of the best games on the console!

I'm a little surprised. I expected GTA to be top. But I knew Wii Fit would sell well and continue to.

Brawl and Mario Kart are both good games, but for some reason I never feel the urge to play them.

You gota remember though, its hardly GTA's fault.
They have a much smaller install base to work with.

Not really.

As GTA 4 was developed for both PS3 and 360, the install base wouldn\'t have been much smaller than that of the Wii. And lets not forget GTA 4 PC as well

Edit: Just found this:
Take 2 financial report
Which says this:
\"Sales of Rockstar Games\' blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV continued to exceed the Company\'s expectations. Over 10 million units have been sold through to consumers as of August 16, 2008\"

Which doesn\'t match those figures anyway.

All I can say is: LOL I wanted any Wii game to beat GTA4! Good thing SSBB also beat GTA4 in USA (not merging figures from both consoles that is.)
