EA Fills A Dead Space on Wii

EA have been rumoured to have been working on more games on Wii that take advantage of the gap in the market recently - that of the 'hardcore' market left so barren by many others so far. The first of their titles is just turning up on our radars now and has seemingly been confirmed to be a version of their survival horror Dead Space.

The fantastic Dead Space was originally released on 360/PS3/PC last year and is perhaps best described as 'Resident Evil 4 in space' - and as any players of RE4 can attest, this is nothing but a good thing. The player follows Isaac and his team as they go on a mission to repair a space craft which, predictably, goes extremely wrong when it becomes apparent that they've unknowingly wandered right into the home of some not-so-friendly aliens. While clearly inspired by the success of Capcom's title, it does not merely borrow the gameplay mechanics and run off; it moves the formula along with seamless HUD integration, allows movement while attacking and generally becomes a much more immersive experience.

Very little is know so far - is it a remake, or a new entry into the series altogether? - but this we know for certain: if it's as terrifying as the original, this is definitely one that mini-game fans won't be latching onto. After the Wii edition of Resident Evil 4, we can't wait to get our remotes pointing with this one...

Thanks to EDGE-Online and Linkyshinks for the news tip.

This is EXACTLY the kind of support Wii is needing from the third parties. Good work, EA. It's worth noting that they've also said they'll be carrying on with their usage of the Sims and Hasbro franchises on Wii - this kind of dual support for multiple audiences is a strategy that should do wonders for them, and rightfully so as even their 'casual' games have been mainly decent overall to date. As Wii is market leader, they've apparently got the most development going forward on it too...

I really hope this is a new one and not just a repeat of the 360/PS3/PC version, there needs to be more Dead Space. The first is excellent.

I hope it's just as good in terms of presentation, please please don't skimp on the visual/audio quality EA. Wii's certainly not a true high-def machine, but it can at least perform as well as a high end Xbox/low-end 360 title.

lol @ the pic they use.

While the awesome graphics of the PC and 360 game are not replicable on Wii. everything else is. Awesome sound design included.

They will have to tune the NPC AI to suit the Wii controls, if they do that well it could be a very good game for Wii. If the required effort goes into the game. Wii Remote controls with a touch of lag could work very well indeed. The Wii can handle physics very well also, you only have to look at other games on Wii to see how good heavy physics based games can work with good programing.

Peoples comparisons with Dead Rising: CTD have no validity. This game is not dependent on such high NPC numbers, or textures. The game runs a low speed engine that could actually be pushed on Wii, but it would require multiple data loads during play.

Your are going to lose a lot of the appeal of the original when it will have reduced graphics, but the hope is you could gain a lot more if the controls are implemented well, and AI is tweaked for them. If they are going for straight off port with no such tweaking it could be bad. Sensitivity has to be locked no question about it.

    EDIT:

My choice for GOTY 08 on PC and 360

They'd probably have to rip out a lot of their engine, mainly lighting to get it running, and then it'd look pretty rubbish. I don't expect much from this. If you don't own a decent PC, a 360 or a PS3 at this point in time I have to wonder how you survive anyway.

By not being TEH HARDCOREZ OOBERGAMER is my guess ;-Smilie..

I\'ve already got this running on my laptop and all, so if this is going to be the exact same game (except for the controls) there\'s isn\'t THAT much of a reason for me to buy it, but nonetheless I hope it turns out good.
(Resident Evil 4 was just too awesome of a game to not buy when it was released as a Wiiport, Dead Space I like, but it doesn\'t quite \"do it\" for me like RE4 did.)

Thinking about it a bit more,, Playing this game on the TV in the living room would be a lot less scary than playing it on my laptop in my bedroom. Hmm, might have to get this anywaySmilie

EDIT: Grrr, my U_Umlaut+B came up as a question-mark, had to change it to \"Oober\" :3..

Oh nice, I do have a powerful PC to run this if I wanted, but I got sick of HD games being so short. Let's see what they do on the Wii, a Spinoff, more levels, etc. If they do, I'll buy it gladly.

    A little something I found on Neogaf's page, a junior member says this;

I can't say anything specific about the game. I can tell you that in terms of how it looks you guys will not be disappointed.

Expect actual details in the coming weeks!

Not a big deal you may think, but it turns out that he's a programmer at EA Redwood, who worked on the PS360 Dead Space. So chances are it's the original team dealing with this Wii version, whether it's a port or not.

I hope they don't rip it off too much graphics-wise. I wanted to have a look for a long time to this game and I know reviews and videos. I know, that Wii can do a lot with lighting, the machine is slow on polygons (only when too much is happening on screen, in fact Cube and Wii can throw out millions of polygons very quickly) and textures (small RAM!). But they can do it!

It's just the thing with this game on Wii. Wiimote is classic for these games. Heck, I even like Disaster and that is 3rd person. Red Steel does it and fails on view other things.

I like what EA does, too. It makes very good casuals (MySims, Boom Blox, ...), even if I seldom buy them, they are no cheap rip-offs. They have the great opportunity to step deep into core-market on Wii with this title when done right. Capcom with Resi4 did it and that had over aged graphics. They can pull this off with good controls and great visuals. SEGA does similar things with The Conduit and I appreciate already what these two try to give us. They want to make money, certainly, but they lay some effort into it. It's hard to make a great hardcore game on Wii, but the result is all the more satisfying. Cores demand a lot, but they can be very giving for a company money-wise. And they can sell a lot with a great core-game on Wii with the user base installed. Heck, we all here are cores and own a Wii. We would buy it if it's good. Shame a lot of people already own it on X360, PC and PS3 and will not buy it again. I don't own it and like Alone In The Dark for its graphic and atmosphere (but hate it for its frustrating moments).
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Not much to be confused about. A lot of games these days, especially action games and the likes on PS360, are quite short. They\'ve always been short, but because of the higher budget needed for the graphics and sound development, some games are shorter than they might\'ve been with lower costs for graphics/audio (think Wii/DS/GBA, anything \'underpowered\' compared to its competition.)
Not to say there aren\'t more than enough exceptions, with all the WRPGs that\'re released as well. But, really,, being confused by that statement?

Sure, it\'s a bit of an overstatement, but surely you get his point? And surely you can forgive him for exaggerating a bit because it was just a passing statement? Shirley?

To be fair it has nothing to do with the system's abilities at all, there is no reason a game should be longer on the Wii, unless EA really wanna give it that extra something to attract buyers.

Really, it's the developer who decides the length of a game, and said game's style and genre.

Lol thank you! I am really disappointed with HD games these days... I play PC for some time now, and beating the block busters in less than 10 hrs is terrible... DMC4 specially. I get really pissed when you buy games, spending money on them and it's fun for some time then... ends?
COD4 had my hopes up until... bah... Crysis took longer but storyline was really bald. Timeshift was so short, Lost planet had me so into it then 2 days it was done. Then Far Cry 2, rainbow Six (1 & 2) at least Lord of the Rings conquest maintains me entertained for now.

But yeah, generally they're short because they waste a lot of space with HD visuals, physics, sound, etc. Little is left for the actual game...

*kisses PC* I still Love you CSS.

Not entirely true. If the system has superior abilities, people expect developers to put those abilities to good use, meaning you\'ll need a bigger budget to get the most out of an X360, than you\'ll need to get the most out of a Wii.
There\'s only so much a developer can spend on a game before the chances of making a profit become very slim.

In a way, the systems abilities really do have to do with the length of a game, because the longer the game, the more content, the more it costs to make.
Costs are lower when optimising graphics for a weaker system, so the general costs of making a 2 hour-game on Wii would be lower than a 2 hour-game on X360. This allows them to make longer games on Wii that would most likely still be cheaper than said 2 hour-game on 360.

Hope that made sense, I\'m tired as a truck right now Smilie

SO YEAH: Long story short,, Developers decide on the lengt of a game, but that also has a lot to do with costs. Games cost less to make on a weaker system, allowing them to take a risk/expand games a bit more for less than it would cost to make a shorter game on a superior system.

I think the developers at EA will do a decent job with this, I thought they did a pretty good job with Skate it on the Wii. I hope there will be more developers that turn to quality gaming this year like EA, Sega, and capcom, and (unlike Capcom) actually advertise their games and not give an excuse for others to say 'oh, hardcore games don't sell on Wii, it sucks'.
