In London today, renowned developer Ubisoft announced details regarding the highly innovative multiplayer modes for their upcoming cell shaded shooter, XIII, due for release during fall (Q3/4) 2003 on all next generation consoles. The Playstation 2 and Xbox versions shall feature the more technologically advanced version of XIII, where players can combat against others using an online version. The GameCube version, however, shall utilise the more traditional four-way split screen approach used in many shooters of past and present.

There are several different multiplayer modes on the GameCube. The three standard ones, which also feature in many different shooters, are:

  • Deathmatch - various standard options where each person fights for survival against other players, human or computer controlled and the person with the most kills, or other (depending on the options chosen) wins.

  • Team Deathmatch - again, a standard multiplayer option as far as the shooter is concerned. Instead of going alone, teams - whether fair or biased, go against each other in various different scenarios.

  • Capture the Flag - Players compete to gain control of a 'flag' or base area for a certain period of time.

However, there is also a new type of multiplayer action known as the hunt mode. During the hunt, players chase a target that is continuously trying to escape from capture across the map. Points are gained depending on the total damage each time the target has been hit. However, each time it receives damage, it shrinks in size, becoming smaller and harder to target but touching the target results in an instant death.

It seems that Ubisoft are taking the more traditional approach for the GameCube version, and hopefully there shall be various options within the main 3, as well as the hunt mode, to keep players occupied. However, the single player element to the game also, from various builds, seems to provide a stable amount of action and adventure.
