Sega Discussing Pure 2D Sonic for Consoles

Sonic creator Yuji Naka and Sega's Tetsu Katano recently discussed the mixed reception for recent Sonic games, and a possible 2D outing being considered.

Eurogamer spoke to both of the game designers, first discussing Naka's decision to leave Sonic development and peruse other projects with Prope, the unique Let's Tap and slightly odd Let's Catch due for Wii this year. Naka notes how he feels the blue hedgehog is in good hands, and it's good to see him breaking out of his own mould and into other areas.

Tetsu Katano was quizzed on whether fans would ever see a 2D Sonic on home consoles, a new entry into what many consider the speedy hedgehog's glory days? He mentions that he (and presumably Sega also) are aware about the criticisms for the extra features, but he feels its how they're implemented that counts. But then comes a ray of light, with the possibility of a new sonic entirely in 2D/2D style:

Obviously we do like to target core users of Sonic games, but it's still under discussion so I can't say a lot about it

OMG I will cry if they announce Sonc the Hedgehog 4.Smilie

It would need to be with the S3&K engine though and not like the GBA graphics.

I hope by 2D they mean 3D but side-scrolling like the old games [like Sonic Rush but with a 3D background too] so it won't be underusing the graphics engine like it was a Virtual Console game.
I'm totally for the returning to the old though!

they should either (A: Make any Sonic game 2-D speedy-sidescroller-only) or (B: NEVER MAKE A SONIC GAME AGAIN! There is a difference between "Breaking the mold" and cheap badly implemented ideas!)

Nice! Time for the "New Sonic the Hedgehog." Maybe a new power up will be a mushroom that makes Sonic gigantic. Smilie

Sweet! The modern Sonic games suck a lot, so a return to form would be great.

Except Rush and Unleashed didn't suck, especially Rush.

If they can't make you happy with the Advance or Rush series, what makes you think Sonic 4 will be any different? It'll still be the same team working on it, the level design might suck and have a huge lack of robots like newer Sonic games.

I'm just worried that as soon as Sonic 4 is announced, everyone will think they can't go wrong with the game, when yes, they can.

One day I will be a real life anime.

Agreed. The Advance & Rush series were the next best thing to the original Sonic games and if they just continued to make them for the rest of Sonics career, I'd be totally cool with that. It would be nice though to see a game go back to the original series... But I'd wonder how they would fit all of those damn sidekicks in a new game? Smilie

Would be awesome, and please, please revert to regular animal-type badnicks and level-specific enemies.

In recent games there have been this - a few regular looking enemies, but mainly you get those same mechs over and over and over.

Despite being kinda crap, Sonic Rivals games have that, there are mechs too, but also lots of animal badniks.
