DSi Region Lock Due to Age Ratings

Nintendo's UK boss David Yarnton discussed the company's decision to region-lock DSi specific software.

He notes that the main decision behind the move was to due to the varying age ratings and restrictions between regions, and software available to purchase in one area may not be suitable for those of the same age in another.

As an industry, we are trying to take a responsible stance in that area, to make sure that we have people aware of what content they get, and that there is a certain amount of protection.

Yarnton also discusses piracy and illegal activity, some of which had been considered in the additional features the revised console provides. For example the decision to drop Mp3 support was due to the possibility that "a lot of those files may be pirated". Nintendo also hope to protect their properties and publishers by releasing periodic firmware updates to combat handheld piracy (with Flash carts and roms).

    Thanks to MCV.

BS. I can think of only two mature titles on DS, it\'s blatantly obvious why they have done this.

Exactly. Money, business importing revenue loss - there goes a little mass appeal right out the window.

They migh hurt themselves with this one. After all, portables get carried around. When I go on a holiday in Japan, you bet I want to buy some DS games to play right there.

Now lock down breathing, because "a lot of the air might be polluted".

In truth, you don't like the fact you can't tax it. Pfft.

This only effects downloaded stuff though, right? Normal DS carts are still region free. I hope.

No, there will be DSi specific games that require DSi functionality. Those are included in this. Smilie

Other than DSWare I havn't heard any confirmation or even suggestion of DSi specific games.

I know it's an ongoing debate but I really don't see it happening.

There will be DSi-Specific titles on the way.

    From Nintendo themselves:

In addition to downloadable games, Nintendo DSi is able to play games made specifically for the system and sold at retail. The system can also play most Nintendo DSâ„¢ games, and will have access to a library of more than 850 titles originally made for that system.

I'm pretty sure a few have been confirmed too.

The DS is a handheld console, which you can take around the world to places like USA and Japan. The problem is no, with my old DS which isnt region locked and I can buy any games for no matter the region. This is a stupid thing Nintendo have done, I am still tempted to get this new DSi but with the restriction thing is just bullocks. /Epic fail

this is very very very very very old news. (the interview is new though) but the reasons were given a very long time ago.

EDIT: Sorry if this came off as rude, but I thought C3 reported on this long long ago, and now there is a second interview that give exactly the same data, and yet it\'s posted again. Just saying, info should not be posted more than once.

To be honest, with the SD slot + the Internet, someone is bound to create a region-free firmware mod. Fingers crossed they do. So many amazing stuff never makes it over here. Hell, we never even got WarioWare Twisted. At least for the GBA we could import it easily.

If a region-free hack isn\'t made, and Jump Super Stars 3 gets made and it happens to be DSi exclusive, I\'ll be importing a Japanese DSi. Smilie

    lol @ Nintendo.
No one is buying that Smilie

I really dont get companys anyway. If they just did away with the whole regions autogether, they could just make one cart/disc worldwide.
This would surely *hugely* increase efficiancy of disc manufactor and shipments?
Sure, you need all the langurages on the disc, but if your not doing voiceacting a few different text files wont kill the space.

Is it really that big an audience? All standard DS games will work fine, and how many people would import specific DSi games anyway?

And if I was on holiday in Japan, I wouldn't be buying games that are in Japanese anyway. (Although America would be a different situation obviously.)

It's not even the importing, it's regular DS owners not being able to play DSi games. That's a huge audience, I don't think that many people will be paying £150 for what may as well be another DSL.

Ditto, though it's not the type of game that will be made DSi specific though, won't have a need for camera's.....unless it does DLC, but then we would have to import japanese nintendo points as well! *cries*

Ahh I see. Yeh, on this point I totally agree. DSi specific games will probably have quite small sales, I can't really see them taking off unless one of insanely amazing or something. It's almost like Nintendo are shooting themselves in the foot by not taking advantage of their large market share.

I shroomed it, for him being rude about it. Who cares if it\'s old news? I haven\'t heard about it and I\'m sure many others haven\'t.

Why does it matter anyway? some members on here have a serious attitude problems.[/quote]

ha rude? Lol I would consider that polite considering this is the internet. Your right some people have some serious attitude problems. Smilie ¬_¬
Someone gets shroomed for saying piece of news is old... Fuck sake. Your only being selfish it\'s not my fault or his that your not up to date on the news. It\'s like a new reporter going on the news tomorrow reporting Jade Goodie has cancer. ¬_¬

This is a news site it\'s users expect up to date information not news days old. If you want old news Marzy look in older stories.

I\'m not flaming C3, I love C3, it just needs to be more up to date thats all. I know JB is obviously busy with other projects, etc. I don\'t want this turning into a C3 WTF are you flaming it for Birdo thread.
