GamePro recently spoke to Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe on Punch Out!! Wii, and why Mario wouldn't umpire this time round.

One of the most iconic features of the original Punch Out!! arcade conversion on the NES was the addition of our favourite plumber, Mario, as an umpire. However, it seems with the Wii version Nintendo won't be bringing back their mascot as a guest star.

GamePro: Last question: Why can not Mario umpire?

Tanabe: Miyamoto wouldn't allow it. No just kidding, actually there's a much more practical reason for it. For exampre he just doesn't fit the graphical style of the remake. To make him look good in the ring, we would have to adjust his physical measurements. But then he wouldn't be Mario anymore.

Some new cam footage and official trailer from GDC:

I kinda understand. Although personally I don\'t think Mario would look so bad Cel Shaded. It\'s a shame he won\'t be back.

Cell Shaded wouldnt be such a problem, but the scewed preportions wouldnt fit.
Remember the Mario in that NintendoON fanvideo made before the "Revolutions" information came out? Downright creepy looking.

We don't really need to see mario in EVERY game? Do we?
