The Conduit Multiplayer Test Experiences Problems

Sega held a private press event yesterday in the US to demonstrate the multiplayer aspects of Wii shooter, Conduit, but run into some problems.

The event was set to demonstrate how multiplayer works online - connecting to other players, the speed, fluidity - everything you'd expect from an online test, but unfortunately according to IGN, Nintendo's servers went down just as the show had started. The demo was halted and instead SEGA had to walk through the single player features.

The UK demonstration's coming up at the beginning of May, and we should be there to bring you some coverage into how it all works - unless Bowser munches away at the servers again.

Thanks to C3 reader Linkyshinks for the tip.

Update: speaking of multiplayer, check out the latest Conduit trailer to see how heading online will work in the Wii shooter:

I feel sorry for them. They're in an uphill battle trying to make a good online mode when Nintendo's infrastructure sucks so badly. That's the only reason MoH Heroes 2's online was good -- they host the game on their own servers. No lag whatsoever. Play Brawl online and it feels like you're moving in slow mo.

Hopefully they can get it to work..

Very true. Nintendo needs better server infrastructures for this tyoe of thing. I hope they will invest in some proper gaming serers. They aren't THAT hard to get by... Smilie

I still dont get why console games cant work like PC :?

Just have a direct client/host connection between users.
If I want to play a Multiplayer game of, say, Red Alert or Worms on my pc, I dont need EAs severs running to do it.

While I agree that Nintendo basically sucks when it comes to online, I wouldn't say it runs in "slow-mo." I connect to an open network located a few blocks away, and I hardly ever experience any lag at all. That said, if I was Sega, that would be a total bummer. I'm looking forward to seeing how this game's online mode plays out. The game already looks specacular and fun, but online is a major plus. Especially after seeing how cool it looks in that video.

    Online!

Mario Kark Wii runs perfectly for me. Smash Bros online was just poorly done.

The Conduit is looking great and will get my support.

Did anybody catch this? At the lobby screen where it shows all the players in the party, if you pause it, on the bottom left you see it says "+ Add Friend". Do you think this means that you can add random people you meet online as friends, or does it go to the friend codes registration?

I'm not to sure what to say about Brawl. I hear that many fighting games have lag problems since they depend on so many split second moments, but then again so does about every other genre of gamingSmilie

SmilieI really hope they fix the problems with online. No other FPS on Wii has topped MoH:H2 yet(in the online aspect)and all my eggs are in one basket for this title. From what they showed in that trailer it definitely looks addicting. I like the players death animation and there looks to be a ranking system. I wonder if there will be any character customization?

    Online!

I really hope the online pulls through, it would be great for the Wii to have an FPS comparable to Halo 2/3 when it comes to online, and i'm hoping it would be better than Halo in Single player(too much going back on levels to finish them).

It was a shame that Nintendo messed up on them this time.

I wish people will stop bringing up Halo, I only like the 1st one and COD4/Kill Zone 2 shits all over the other twoSmilie

I hope "The Conduit" serves as a conduit so that good Devs get their heads out of the dirt and produce some decent Wii software.

Well, I only brung up Halo because I haven't played Kill Zone 2, but yeah, I'm sure The Conduit will trounce the Single player aspect of Halo.

And yes, I hope this sells well, with the amount of effort that HVS have put into this, it deserves to, and then other 3rd party Devs besides Sega, Headstrong Games, Platinum Games, EA, and sometimes Capcom will put more effort in.

Well no not quite, racing games and FPS can hide lag by estimating player posotions.

Although it can only do so much thats why in a really laggy FPS matches you will see some guy running up to the left or somthing then he will dissapear up to the right then probably dissapear to somewhere else.

I'll have a look for you; we're at a similar event, if all goes to plan, in a couple of weeks. If anybody else has any questions about the online feel free to chuck them in here and I'll try to get the answers to as many as I can remember.

    I don't think you understand....

Most decent PC games run on dedicate servers. The game is hosted on a remote computer and everyone connects to that.

    Peer

    Server-Peer
    |
    Peer

XBox Live hosts games on people's XBoxes, so if that person has a crap connection the game will lag for everyone. On a dedicated server, one person's lag will not effect the connection between others. Also, in peer hosted games the host gets an advantage in that they have no latency.

    Peer

    Peer-Peer
    |
    Peer

I'm fairly certain Wii games are peer hosted as well. When they're talking about Nintendo's servers, all they probably do is hold a list of games to connect to which are hosted on peoples own Wiis
The PS3 uses dedicated servers and lately I've become more and more surprised that Microsoft charge for XBL at all, it doesn't make sense.

Big deal that they had network troubles. It happens to everyone. Have people already forgotten the time Xbox Live went down for several days because Microsoft forgot that holiday sales would mean more people signing onto Xbox Live and it crashed?

It should also be noted that the servers they were using were merely Nintendo\'s development test servers and not the servers used for actual online play in released games.

Since when does a game's rating affect how seriously a game is taken. That's absolutely ridiculous.

Is anyone really not going to get the game now just because it is T and not M?
